Beginner speaking practice to say what you like, ask about hobbies, and invite someone using recorded German examples.

In this workshop you will practice a short German conversation about hobbies. You will say what you like, ask another person what they like, and respond to an invitation. The recorded examples give you the exact phrases to use. Work through the guided exchange first, then the reply comprehension task, and finally the recall task where you switch roles.

Saying what you like and asking about hobbies

Start with a simple statement about an activity you enjoy. The recording «Wir beide lieben Wandern!» means that both people love hiking. Use this kind of sentence when you want to share an interest with someone. To ask a question about a hobby, listen to «Spielst du Schach?», which asks whether the other person plays chess. A short answer can add another activity. The line «Ich spiele auch gern Fußball.» means that the speaker also likes playing soccer. Notice that 'auch gern' is used to say you also like doing something, and 'gern' means 'gladly' or 'like to'. When you speak, say your activity clearly and then ask your partner about one hobby. Keep the exchange simple: one statement, one question, one answer.

    Inviting someone and responding

After you find a shared interest, you can invite the other person. The recording «Hast du Lust, zusammen zu wandern?» asks whether the person feels like hiking together. This is a friendly way to suggest doing an activity with someone. In the recorded exchange, «Spielst du Schach?» asks whether the other person plays chess. The reply «Ja, ich spiele gern Schach. Und du?» says yes, the speaker likes playing chess, and then asks the other person in return. The next line «Ich auch! Wir beide lieben Schach!» means that the first speaker also loves chess and points out that both love chess. Then «Super! Hast du Lust, zusammen zu spielen?» responds with enthusiasm and asks whether the person feels like playing together. When you practice, keep the order: question, answer, follow-up question, and then the invitation. Note that 'Hast du Lust...?' is informal; use 'Hätten Sie Lust...?' with strangers or in formal contexts.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided exchange about a hobby

You are talking with a new classmate during a break. You want to find out if you both like the same activity. Use the recorded lines to guide your speaking.

Your task: Read the first line aloud as Speaker A: «Spielst du Schach?». Then read the reply as Speaker B: «Ja, ich spiele gern Schach. Und du?». After that, read the follow-up as Speaker A: «Ich auch! Wir beide lieben Schach!». Finally, read the invitation as Speaker B: «Super! Hast du Lust, zusammen zu spielen?». Use the recorded lines and keep the chess topic in all four lines.

    2

    Choose the right reply

You hear someone ask a question about a hobby. You need to choose a suitable answer from the recorded lines. The question is «Spielst du Schach?».

Your task: Which recorded line is a suitable answer to «Spielst du Schach?»? Choose one: «Wir beide lieben Wandern!», «Hast du Lust, zusammen zu wandern?», or «Ja, ich spiele gern Schach. Und du?». Say your choice aloud, then say the full line.

    3

    Recall and switch roles

You have practiced a short exchange about chess. Now you will recall the lines without looking at them first. Imagine you are Speaker A and then Speaker B.

Your task: Say the four lines of the chess exchange from memory in the correct order. Start with the question «Spielst du Schach?», then the reply «Ja, ich spiele gern Schach. Und du?», then the follow-up «Ich auch! Wir beide lieben Schach!», and end with the invitation «Super! Hast du Lust, zusammen zu spielen?». After that, switch roles: Speaker B says the question, Speaker A replies, Speaker B follows up, and Speaker A invites.

    Common questions

Can I practice alone if I do not have a partner?

Yes. You can read both roles aloud. Use the recorded lines and keep the same order: question, reply, follow-up, invitation. When you switch roles, change who reads each part, but do not change the order of the lines.

How do I know if my answer is correct?

Compare your spoken line with the recording. For the comprehension task, the correct answer is «Ja, ich spiele gern Schach. Und du?» because it answers the chess question. For the recall task, check that the question comes first, the reply second, the follow-up third, and the invitation last.
