Practice thanking your host and saying goodbye in German with recorded lines for a friendly evening visit.

Free lesson path Phrase audioNo sign-up needed

In this speaking workshop you will practice polite German phrases for the end of a meal or evening at someone's home. You will thank your host, say that you have to leave, and respond when someone thanks you. Each native example comes from a short recording, and you can play both roles with the audio. Listen, repeat, and use the tasks to check yourself.

    Thanking Your Host

When you leave a meal or an evening at someone's home, a warm thank-you is a good first step. A simple option is «Danke für einen schönen Abend.», which means 'Thanks for a lovely evening.' A more emphatic thank-you is «Vielen Dank für den schönen Abend.», which means 'Many thanks for the lovely evening.' If you want to compliment the host's home and hospitality in a friendly way, you can say «Es war sehr schön bei dir.», which means 'It was very nice at your place.' Notice that «Es war sehr schön bei dir.» uses an informal word for 'you' and fits friends or family. Practice each line slowly, then at a natural speed. Keep your tone warm and smile as you speak. Neither thank-you itself chooses du or Sie. The dialogue uses informal dir and euch, so rehearse it as an informal visit.

Announcing That You Have to Go

After thanking your host, you often need to say that you are leaving. A polite line is «Ich muss jetzt leider gehen.», which means 'Unfortunately, I have to go now.' The word for 'unfortunately' softens the message and makes it sound friendly rather than sudden. You can say «Ich muss jetzt leider gehen.» after «Danke für einen schönen Abend.» or «Vielen Dank für den schönen Abend.». In a longer goodbye, one person says «Vielen Dank für den schönen Abend. Es war wirklich toll bei euch.», which means 'Many thanks for the lovely evening. It was really great at your place.' The host can answer with «Das freut mich, dass es dir gefallen hat. Komm gut nach Hause!», which means 'I'm glad you enjoyed it. Get home safely!' Then the guest can reply with «Danke, mache ich. Wir sehen uns bald wieder. Tschüss!», which means 'Thanks, I will. We'll see each other again soon. Bye!' The host may close with «Tschüss! Gute Nacht!», which means 'Bye! Good night!' Practice the pairs so the exchange feels natural.

    Listening for Roles and Replies

In a goodbye exchange, it helps to hear who is speaking. The guest usually thanks the host and announces the departure, while the host responds warmly and wishes the guest a safe trip home. Listen to «Vielen Dank für den schönen Abend. Es war wirklich toll bei euch.» and «Das freut mich, dass es dir gefallen hat. Komm gut nach Hause!» together. «Vielen Dank für den schönen Abend. Es war wirklich toll bei euch.» is the guest's thank-you and compliment, and «Das freut mich, dass es dir gefallen hat. Komm gut nach Hause!» is the host's friendly reply. Then listen to «Danke, mache ich. Wir sehen uns bald wieder. Tschüss!» and «Tschüss! Gute Nacht!». «Danke, mache ich. Wir sehen uns bald wieder. Tschüss!» is the guest's final thanks and goodbye, and «Tschüss! Gute Nacht!» is the host's closing wish. When you practice, try to keep the roles clear: one person is leaving, the other is staying. This makes the conversation easier to follow and to repeat.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    Guided Thank-You Exchange

Imagine you have just finished a nice evening at a friend's home. You are the guest and you want to thank your host before leaving.

Your task: Play the role of the guest. Say a thank-you line from the recordings, then add that you have to go. Use «Danke für einen schönen Abend.» or «Vielen Dank für den schönen Abend.» for the thank-you, and then say «Ich muss jetzt leider gehen.». Repeat the pair twice, first slowly and then at a natural speed.

    2

    Choose the Right Reply

You will hear a short goodbye exchange. One person is the guest and one is the host. Listen carefully to the roles.

Your task: Listen to «Vielen Dank für den schönen Abend. Es war wirklich toll bei euch.» and «Das freut mich, dass es dir gefallen hat. Komm gut nach Hause!». In «Vielen Dank für den schönen Abend. Es war wirklich toll bei euch.», the guest thanks the host and says it was great at their place. In «Das freut mich, dass es dir gefallen hat. Komm gut nach Hause!», the host replies that they are glad and wishes the guest a safe trip home. Now listen again and decide: who is leaving, and who is staying? Then choose the line that fits the host's reply from these two options: «Das freut mich, dass es dir gefallen hat. Komm gut nach Hause!» or «Danke, mache ich. Wir sehen uns bald wieder. Tschüss!». Say your choice out loud.

    3

Recall the Goodbye with Correct Roles

Now you will practice the full goodbye exchange from memory. Use the recordings as a model, but try to say the lines without reading them first.

Your task: Work with a partner or play both roles yourself. The guest says «Vielen Dank für den schönen Abend. Es war wirklich toll bei euch.», then the host says «Das freut mich, dass es dir gefallen hat. Komm gut nach Hause!». The guest answers with «Danke, mache ich. Wir sehen uns bald wieder. Tschüss!», and the host closes with «Tschüss! Gute Nacht!». Say each line in the correct role. If you forget a line, listen to the recording again and repeat it.

    Common questions

Which thank-you line should I use with a friend?

With a friend or family member, «Danke für einen schönen Abend.» is a warm and simple choice. It means 'Thanks for a lovely evening.' You can also use «Es war sehr schön bei dir.», which means 'It was very nice at your place.' Both are friendly and fit an informal visit.

How do I politely say that I need to leave?

Use «Ich muss jetzt leider gehen.», which means 'Unfortunately, I have to go now.' The word for 'unfortunately' makes the departure sound softer and more polite. You can say it after a thank-you line such as «Danke für einen schönen Abend.» or «Vielen Dank für den schönen Abend.».
