Joining a German Meeting: Ask to Speak and Add a Point

Practice polite German phrases for asking to speak in a meeting, understanding a reply, and adding a suggestion in the right order.

In a meeting, you often need to signal that you want to speak before you say your actual point. This workshop gives you short, polite German phrases for that moment, then lets you practice them in a guided exchange, a reply-comprehension task, and a recall task. You will see the English meaning of each phrase before you use it, so you always know what you are saying and what to expect back.

    Asking for permission to speak

These phrases let you signal politely that you want the floor. «Ich hätte einen Vorschlag.» means you have a suggestion to offer. «Darf ich etwas ergänzen?» is a direct but polite request to add something. «Könnte ich dazu etwas sagen?» asks whether you may say something about the current topic. «Entschuldigung, ich möchte kurz etwas einwerfen.» is a slightly more formal way to say you want to interject briefly. Notice that three of these are questions or polite requests, while «Ich hätte einen Vorschlag.» is a polite statement that announces a suggestion. In a real meeting, you would say one of these, wait for a signal, and then give your point. In the recorded exchange, the chair responds with «Das ist ein guter Punkt. Möchten Sie dazu etwas sagen, Frau Weber?» before the participant continues.

    Understanding the reply and continuing

After you ask to speak, the chair may respond. «Wir haben jetzt die Kosten besprochen. Gibt es noch Anmerkungen?» shows the chair summarizing the discussion and asking whether there are more comments. «Ja, ich hätte einen Vorschlag. Könnten wir die Ausgaben auf zwei Jahre verteilen?» shows a participant responding with a suggestion and a concrete proposal. «Das ist ein guter Punkt. Möchten Sie dazu etwas sagen, Frau Weber?» shows the chair acknowledging the point and inviting a specific person to speak. «Darf ich kurz ergänzen? Die Verwaltungskosten würden dann auch sinken.» shows that person asking to add something briefly and then giving a reason. The order matters: the chair asks, the participant answers, the chair follows up, and the invited person responds. When you practice, keep that order even if you swap roles.

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Wir haben jetzt die Kosten besprochen. Gibt es noch Anmerkungen?

We have now discussed the costs. Are there any more comments?
    B

Ja, ich hätte einen Vorschlag. Könnten wir die Ausgaben auf zwei Jahre verteilen?

Yes, I would have a suggestion. Could we spread the expenses over two years?
    A

Das ist ein guter Punkt. Möchten Sie dazu etwas sagen, Frau Weber?

That is a good point. Would you like to say something about that, Ms. Weber?
    B

Darf ich kurz ergänzen? Die Verwaltungskosten würden dann auch sinken.

May I briefly add something? The administrative costs would then also decrease.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided exchange: ask and respond

Two learners sit facing each other. Learner A plays the chair. Learner B plays a participant who wants to speak. Use only the phrases you have practiced.

Your task: Learner A says «Wir haben jetzt die Kosten besprochen. Gibt es noch Anmerkungen?». Learner B responds with «Ja, ich hätte einen Vorschlag. Könnten wir die Ausgaben auf zwei Jahre verteilen?». Learner A then says «Das ist ein guter Punkt. Möchten Sie dazu etwas sagen, Frau Weber?». Learner B finishes with «Darf ich kurz ergänzen? Die Verwaltungskosten würden dann auch sinken.». Read your part aloud clearly, then swap roles and repeat the same order.

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the right response

Read the chair's line «Wir haben jetzt die Kosten besprochen. Gibt es noch Anmerkungen?» aloud. Then look at the three possible replies below and choose the one that fits the situation.

Your task: Which reply is a suitable way for a participant to respond to «Wir haben jetzt die Kosten besprochen. Gibt es noch Anmerkungen?»? Option 1: «Ja, ich hätte einen Vorschlag. Könnten wir die Ausgaben auf zwei Jahre verteilen?». Option 2: «Das ist ein guter Punkt. Möchten Sie dazu etwas sagen, Frau Weber?». Option 3: «Darf ich kurz ergänzen? Die Verwaltungskosten würden dann auch sinken.». Say your choice aloud, then read the matching answer key below.

    3

    Recall with correct roles

Cover the text. One learner is the chair, the other is the participant. You will rebuild the exchange from memory.

Your task: The chair starts with «Wir haben jetzt die Kosten besprochen. Gibt es noch Anmerkungen?». The participant replies with «Ja, ich hätte einen Vorschlag. Könnten wir die Ausgaben auf zwei Jahre verteilen?». The chair follows up with «Das ist ein guter Punkt. Möchten Sie dazu etwas sagen, Frau Weber?». The participant adds with «Darf ich kurz ergänzen? Die Verwaltungskosten würden dann auch sinken.». Say each line from memory, then check the text and correct any mistakes.

    Common questions

Do I need to wait after asking to speak?

Yes. Phrases like «Darf ich etwas ergänzen?» and «Könnte ich dazu etwas sagen?» are polite requests, so it is normal to pause briefly and let the chair or the group react. In the recorded exchange, the chair responds with «Das ist ein guter Punkt. Möchten Sie dazu etwas sagen, Frau Weber?» before the participant continues with «Darf ich kurz ergänzen? Die Verwaltungskosten würden dann auch sinken.».

Can I use these phrases if I am the chair?

Some of them, yes. If you swap roles, you change who reads which part, but you keep the same order of question, reply, follow-up, and answer.
