In this workshop you will practice introducing a friend to someone in German. You will use the pattern «Das ist mein Freund Sam.» for a male friend and «Das ist meine Freundin Sam.» for a female friend. You will also add a short detail like «Er ist sehr nett.» or «Sie ist sehr nett.» and understand a simple reply such as «Freut mich.» and a follow-up question. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys to check yourself.
Choosing mein or meine
The word you use before Freund or Freundin depends on the gender of the friend. For a male friend, say «Das ist mein Freund Sam.» — This is my friend Sam. For a female friend, say «Das ist meine Freundin Sam.» — This is my friend Sam. The name Sam can belong to anyone, so the noun ending Freund or Freundin tells your listener which form to expect. If you are not sure, decide first whether you are introducing a male or female friend, then choose the matching noun and possessive. Do not guess randomly; the ending -in signals a female friend, and meine matches it.
Adding one short detail
After you introduce your friend, you can add one short detail. For a male friend, say «Er ist sehr nett.» — He is very nice. For a female friend, say «Sie ist sehr nett.» — She is very nice. In this context, Sie means she, not the polite you. You can also add a simple fact if you have learned it, but in this workshop we practice only these two detail sentences. Keep your detail short and clear. The goal is to give your listener one piece of information without changing the basic introduction pattern.
Understanding a simple reply
When you introduce someone, the other person may say «Hallo, Sam. Freut mich.» — Hello, Sam. Nice to meet you. They may also ask a follow-up question like «Und wo arbeitet ihr?» — And where do you two work? You do not need to answer with a new phrase in this workshop. Your job is to recognize the reply and the question. If you hear Freut mich, the person is greeting your friend. If you hear a question with wo, they are asking where. You can answer with a simple phrase you already know, or you can continue practicing the introduction.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Guided introduction exchange
You are with a friend named Sam. You meet Lena. You want to introduce Sam to Lena. Sam is male. Use the recording lines to guide you.
Your task: Say the introduction line for a male friend. Then add the short detail for a male friend. After that, listen to the reply «Hallo, Sam. Freut mich.» and repeat it once. Finally, listen to «Und wo arbeitet ihr?» and repeat it once.
Choose the correct reply
You hear someone say «Hallo, Lena. Das ist mein Freund Sam.» You are Lena. You want to respond with a friendly greeting. Two possible replies are shown below. Only one matches the recording.
Your task: Read the two options: A) «Hallo, Sam. Freut mich.» B) «Er ist sehr nett. Wir arbeiten zusammen.» Choose the option that is a reply from Lena to the introduction. Then say your chosen line aloud.
Recall with correct roles
Now you will play both roles from the recording. First you are the introducer. Then you are Lena. Use only the lines you have practiced.
Your task: Step 1: As the introducer, say «Hallo, Lena. Das ist mein Freund Sam.» Then add «Er ist sehr nett.» Then add «Wir arbeiten zusammen.» Step 2: As Lena, say «Hallo, Sam. Freut mich.» Then ask «Ah, interessant. Und wo arbeitet ihr?» Say each line aloud in the correct order.
Common questions
When do I say mein Freund and when do I say meine Freundin?
Use «Das ist mein Freund Sam.» for a male friend. Use «Das ist meine Freundin Sam.» for a female friend. The noun Freund is masculine, so the possessive is mein. The noun Freundin is feminine, so the possessive is meine. The name Sam can belong to anyone, so the noun ending tells your listener which form is correct.
What does Freut mich mean and how do I respond?
«Freut mich.» means Nice to meet you. It is a friendly reply when you are introduced to someone. In this workshop, you can simply repeat it or continue with the practiced lines. You do not need to invent a new response. If someone asks «Und wo arbeitet ihr?», they are asking where you two work, but you can answer with a simple phrase you already know or continue practicing the introduction.
