Soft Suggestions for Feedback
Polite feedback in German often uses soft suggestion forms. «Vielleicht könntest du es mal mit einer anderen Methode versuchen.» means that the speaker suggests trying a different method. «Wie wäre es, wenn du den Bericht noch einmal überarbeitest?» asks how it would be if the other person revised the report once more. «Es könnte hilfreich sein, wenn du früher anfängst.» says that it could be helpful if the other person started earlier. These lines are useful when you want to give advice without sounding too direct. Notice that each line offers an idea rather than a command. In a workshop setting, you can use these patterns to suggest changes to a draft, a plan, or a task.
A Short Feedback Dialogue
The following exchange shows how polite suggestions and replies can work together. Speaker A says «Ich habe deinen Entwurf gelesen. Vielleicht könntest du die Einleitung noch etwas klarer formulieren.». This means that A read the draft and suggests phrasing the introduction a bit more clearly. Speaker B replies with «Danke für den Hinweis. Wie wäre es, wenn ich ein Beispiel hinzufüge?». This means B thanks A for the hint and asks how it would be if B added an example. Speaker A responds with «Das könnte helfen. Eventuell solltest du auch die Quellenangaben überprüfen.». This means that could help and suggests also checking the references. Speaker B answers with «Gute Idee. Möglicherweise wäre es besser, wenn wir das gemeinsam durchgehen.». This means B thinks it is a good idea and suggests possibly going through it together. The dialogue moves from a suggestion to a reply, then to another suggestion, and finally to agreement.
Understanding the Replies
When you hear a polite suggestion, you can respond in different ways. «Danke für den Hinweis. Wie wäre es, wenn ich ein Beispiel hinzufüge?» shows one way to accept a hint and offer another idea. «Gute Idee. Möglicherweise wäre es besser, wenn wir das gemeinsam durchgehen.» shows agreement and a suggestion to work together. «Eventuell solltest du die Quellen noch einmal überprüfen.» is another soft suggestion: it means that perhaps the other person should check the sources again. In the dialogue, «Das könnte helfen. Eventuell solltest du auch die Quellenangaben überprüfen.» combines agreement with an additional suggestion. These replies help keep the conversation cooperative. Pay attention to whether the speaker is accepting, adding an idea, or suggesting a joint activity.

You will recall the dialogue from memory and assign the correct roles. The dialogue has two speakers: A and B.
Your task: Without looking at the lines, say who said each of these: «Ich habe deinen Entwurf gelesen. Vielleicht könntest du die Einleitung noch etwas klarer formulieren.», «Danke für den Hinweis. Wie wäre es, wenn ich ein Beispiel hinzufüge?», «Das könnte helfen. Eventuell solltest du auch die Quellenangaben überprüfen.», «Gute Idee. Common questions
Do I need to change the recorded lines when I practice?
No. Use the recorded lines exactly as they are. The exercises ask you to read them in order, choose suitable replies, and recall who said what. Changing the words would make it harder to check your answers against the recordings.
Can I practice alone if there are two speakers?
Yes. You can read both roles aloud, but keep the same order of suggestion, reply, follow-up, and agreement. When you swap roles, you change who reads each part, but you do not change the order of the lines.
