In this workshop you will practice thanking a friend in German using informal phrases. You will hear short recorded lines and repeat them, then use them in a simple exchange. The focus is on casual situations with people you know well, like a friend lending you a pen. You will learn to say thanks, show appreciation, and respond when someone thanks you. All native examples come from the recordings, so you can listen and copy the pronunciation. By the end, you should feel comfortable using these phrases in everyday friendly conversations.

    Warm-up: Listen and Repeat

Start by listening to each recorded line and repeating it out loud. Pay attention to the rhythm and sounds. For example, «Danke sehr!» means 'Thanks a lot!' and is used with friends. «Vielen Dank!» means 'Many thanks!' and is a bit more emphatic but still fine among friends. «Ich weiß das zu schätzen.» means 'I appreciate it.' and is a direct way to show gratitude for small favors. «Das ist nett von dir.» means 'That's nice of you.' and is casual and friendly. Practice each line several times until you can say it smoothly. Use the recordings to check pronunciation. Danke sehr and Vielen Dank also work in polite or formal contexts; they are not limited to friends. Das ist nett von dir uses informal dir. This workshop applies the phrases to a friendly pen-loan exchange.

    Guided Exchange: Borrowing a Pen

Now you will practice a short conversation between two friends. One friend asks to borrow a pen, and the other agrees. Listen to the exchange. «Kannst du mir bitte den Stift leihen?» means 'Can you please lend me the pen?' and is a polite request. «Klar, hier bitte.» means 'Sure, here you go.' and is a friendly response. Then the first friend says «Danke sehr! Ich weiß das zu schätzen.», which combines 'Thanks a lot!' and 'I appreciate it.' Finally, the second friend replies with «Kein Problem, gern geschehen!», meaning 'No problem, you're welcome!' Notice how the thanks are informal and warm. Practice both roles: first say the lines of the friend asking for the pen, then switch and say the lines of the friend lending it. This helps you get used to both speaking and responding.

    Choosing the Right Reply

When someone thanks you in German, you can respond in different ways. In the recorded exchange, the reply to thanks is «Kein Problem, gern geschehen!», which means 'No problem, you're welcome!' This is a common informal response. If a friend says «Danke sehr!» or «Vielen Dank!» to you, you can use «Kein Problem, gern geschehen!» as a friendly reply. If a friend says «Ich weiß das zu schätzen.» or «Das ist nett von dir.», you can also respond with «Kein Problem, gern geschehen!». Practice listening to each thank-you line and then saying «Kein Problem, gern geschehen!» in response. This will help you react naturally when someone thanks you. The dialogue uses du between friends; the thank-you expressions themselves have broader uses.

Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Repeat and Match

You will hear four thank-you phrases. After each one, repeat it out loud. Then match it to its English meaning.

Your task: Listen to «Danke sehr!», «Vielen Dank!», «Ich weiß das zu schätzen.», and «Das ist nett von dir.». Repeat each line. Then say which English meaning goes with each: 'Thanks a lot!', 'Many thanks!', 'I appreciate it.', 'That's nice of you.'

    2

    Complete the Exchange

Practise two friends borrowing a pen. A requests the pen and thanks B; B lends it and replies to the thanks. Alternate A, B, A, B.

Your task: First, play the role of the friend asking: say «Kannst du mir bitte den Stift leihen?». Then play the friend lending: say «Klar, hier bitte.». Then say «Danke sehr! Ich weiß das zu schätzen.» to thank them. Finally, respond as the lending friend with «Kein Problem, gern geschehen!».

    3

    Recall and Respond

You will hear a thank-you phrase and then respond with the correct reply. You will also recall the thank-you phrases from memory.

Your task: Listen to «Danke sehr!», «Vielen Dank!», «Ich weiß das zu schätzen.», and «Das ist nett von dir.» one by one. After each, say «Kein Problem, gern geschehen!» as a reply. Then, without listening, try to say all four thank-you phrases from memory.

    Common questions

Can I use these phrases with anyone?

Danke sehr, Vielen Dank and Ich weiß das zu schätzen can also be used in polite or formal situations. Das ist nett von dir uses informal dir. The recorded pen request uses du, so rehearse this particular dialogue as an exchange between people who use du.

What does «Ich weiß das zu schätzen.» mean exactly?

«Ich weiß das zu schätzen.» means 'I appreciate it.' It is a direct way to show gratitude for a small favor. It works well among friends, though it can sound slightly formal in tone.
