In this workshop you practice a short, realistic exchange at street level. You will ask where the tourist information center is, ask about opening hours, and understand a reply that gives a location and a schedule. The recordings give you the exact lines to say and to listen for, so you can rehearse both the visitor and the local person. Work through the guided exchange first, then the reply comprehension task, and finish with a recall task where you switch roles.

Asking where the tourist information center is

Start with a polite opening. The line «Entschuldigung, wo ist die Tourist-Information?» means "Excuse me, where is the tourist information center?" The first word gets attention, and the rest asks for the location. If you only need the location without the polite opening, you can use «Wo ist die Tourist-Information?», which means "Where is the tourist information center?" Both lines ask the same core question, so choose the one that fits how formal you want to sound. Say the question slowly at first, then at a natural speed. Keep your voice steady and let the question rise slightly at the end.

Understanding a location reply and asking about hours

When you ask for the location, you may hear a short reply like «Die ist gleich um die Ecke, neben dem Rathaus.», which means "It's just around the corner, next to the town hall." This tells you the place is very close and gives you a landmark to look for. After you thank the person, you can ask about the schedule with «Danke. Wann ist sie geöffnet?», which means "Thank you. When is it open?" The reply may give both opening and closing times and a day when the place is closed, as in «Von neun bis achtzehn Uhr, aber am Sonntag geschlossen.», which means "From nine to six p.m., but closed on Sunday." Listen for the time range and the closed day. If you need to check whether a map is available, you can also ask «Gibt es hier einen Stadtplan?», which means "Is there a city map here?" And if you want to check whether the person speaks English, use «Sprechen Sie Englisch?», which means "Do you speak English?"

    Putting the exchange together

A full exchange can move from the location question to the hours question. The visitor asks «Entschuldigung, wo ist die Tourist-Information?», the local person answers with «Die ist gleich um die Ecke, neben dem Rathaus.», the visitor responds with «Danke. Wann ist sie geöffnet?», and the local person answers with «Von neun bis achtzehn Uhr, aber am Sonntag geschlossen.». Notice that the follow-up question comes after the thank you, not before the location answer. When you practice, keep that order: ask, listen, thank, then ask about hours. You can also use «Wann ist die Tourist-Information geöffnet?», which means "When is the tourist information center open?" as a direct hours question if you do not want to combine it with a thank you. Practice both the visitor lines and the local person lines so you can recognize the reply when you hear it.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange at the street corner

You are a visitor in a German town. You stop a local person to find the tourist information center. Your partner plays the local person.

Your task: Read the visitor part aloud: «Entschuldigung, wo ist die Tourist-Information?». Your partner reads the local person reply: «Die ist gleich um die Ecke, neben dem Rathaus.». Then read the visitor follow-up: «Danke. Wann ist sie geöffnet?». Your partner reads the final reply: «Von neun bis achtzehn Uhr, aber am Sonntag geschlossen.». After one round, swap roles and repeat the same order.

    2

Choose the right reply for the hours question

You hear a visitor ask about opening hours. You have two possible replies in front of you, but only one matches the question.

Your task: The visitor says «Danke. Wann ist sie geöffnet?». Which reply fits: «Von neun bis achtzehn Uhr, aber am Sonntag geschlossen.» or «Die ist gleich um die Ecke, neben dem Rathaus.»? Say the correct line aloud, then explain in English why the other line does not answer the hours question.

    3

Recall the exchange with switched roles

You now play the local person, and your partner plays the visitor. Use only the lines you have practiced.

Your task: Your partner begins with «Entschuldigung, wo ist die Tourist-Information?». You reply with «Die ist gleich um die Ecke, neben dem Rathaus.». Your partner continues with «Danke. Wann ist sie geöffnet?». You finish with «Von neun bis achtzehn Uhr, aber am Sonntag geschlossen.». Then switch back and repeat once more.

    Common questions

Can I ask about the city map in the same exchange?

Yes. After the location and hours, you can ask «Gibt es hier einen Stadtplan?», which means "Is there a city map here?" This is a separate question, so ask it after the main exchange if you want to check whether a map is available.

What if I do not understand the reply?

You can ask «Sprechen Sie Englisch?», which means "Do you speak English?" This gives you a way to check whether the person can help in English. You can also ask the hours question directly with «Wann ist die Tourist-Information geöffnet?», which means "When is the tourist information center open?"
