In this workshop you practise asking simple questions about internet speed and Wi-Fi, and you learn to understand short answers about speed and reliability. You will hear each question and answer in German, read what it means in English, and then say the lines yourself. The recordings give you the exact phrases, so you can repeat them and use them in a hotel, café or apartment.

Asking about the internet and Wi-Fi

Start with a short question about the internet. The line «Ist das Internet schnell?» means "Is the internet fast?" and the line «Wie schnell ist das Internet?» means "How fast is the internet?". Both ask about speed, but one expects a yes or no answer and the other expects a description. For Wi-Fi, the line «Ist das WLAN hier gut?» means "Is the Wi-Fi good here?". You can also ask about reliability with «Ist die Verbindung zuverlässig?», which means "Is the connection reliable?". These are useful when you arrive somewhere and want to know if you can work or watch videos.

    Understanding short answers

When you ask a question, the other person may answer with a short statement. In the recording, speaker A says «Guten Tag. Ist das WLAN hier gut?», which means "Hello. Is the Wi-Fi good here?". Speaker B answers with «Ja, das WLAN ist schnell. Aber manchmal ist die Verbindung nicht zuverlässig.», which means "Yes, the Wi-Fi is fast. But sometimes the connection is not reliable.". This answer gives both a positive point and a warning. Later, speaker A asks «Wie schnell ist das Internet?», which means "How fast is the internet?", and speaker B replies with «Es ist ziemlich schnell, aber abends langsam.», which means "It is quite fast, but slow in the evening.". Listen for words like fast, slow, reliable and not reliable to understand the situation.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Guten Tag. Ist das WLAN hier gut?

Hello. Is the Wi-Fi good here?
    B

Ja, das WLAN ist schnell. Aber manchmal ist die Verbindung nicht zuverlässig.

Yes, the Wi-Fi is fast. But sometimes the connection is not reliable.

    B

Es ist ziemlich schnell, aber abends langsam.

Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: ask and answer about Wi-Fi

You are at a café and want to know about the Wi-Fi. One person asks, the other answers. Use the recorded lines.

Your task: Read the role of speaker A, then the role of speaker B. A says the line from «Guten Tag. Ist das WLAN hier gut?». B answers with the line from «Ja, das WLAN ist schnell. Aber manchmal ist die Verbindung nicht zuverlässig.». Then swap roles and repeat. Say the lines out loud.

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the matching answer

You hear a question about the internet. Choose the answer that fits the question and the recorded reply.

Your task: Question: Someone asks the line from «Wie schnell ist das Internet?», which means "How fast is the internet?". Which recorded reply matches this question? Option A: the line from «Ja, das WLAN ist schnell. Aber manchmal ist die Verbindung nicht zuverlässig.». Option B: the line from «Es ist ziemlich schnell, aber abends langsam.». Say your choice out loud, then say the full reply.

    3

Recall with correct roles: hotel reception

You are at a hotel reception. One person is the guest, the other is the receptionist. Use the recorded lines and keep the roles correct.

Your task: Guest asks the line from «Guten Tag. Ist das WLAN hier gut?». Receptionist answers with the line from «Ja, das WLAN ist schnell. Aber manchmal ist die Verbindung nicht zuverlässig.». Then the guest asks the line from «Wie schnell ist das Internet?», and the receptionist answers with the line from «Es ist ziemlich schnell, aber abends langsam.». Say all four lines in this order. Then swap roles and repeat.

    Common questions

What is the difference between asking about the internet and asking about Wi-Fi?

The internet is the general connection, while Wi-Fi is the wireless network you use in a place. In the recordings, «Ist das Internet schnell?» asks if the internet is fast, and «Ist das WLAN hier gut?» asks if the Wi-Fi is good here. You can use either question depending on what you want to know.

How do I understand an answer that has both a positive and a negative point?

Listen for words like fast, slow, reliable and not reliable. In «Ja, das WLAN ist schnell. Aber manchmal ist die Verbindung nicht zuverlässig.», the Wi-Fi is fast but the connection is sometimes not reliable. In «Es ist ziemlich schnell, aber abends langsam.», the internet is quite fast but slow in the evening. The answer gives you one good point and one warning, so you know what to expect.
