In this workshop you will practice simple French sentences for talking about food you love, food you can't live without, and food you are not a fan of. You will also practice a short exchange about spicy food and eating out. Each native example is given as a recording reference, and you will read the English meaning before you speak. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys to check yourself.
Say what you love and what you can't live without
Start with a strong positive statement. The line «J'adore les pâtes.» means "I love pasta." Use it when you want to name a food you really enjoy. A stronger positive statement is «Je ne peux pas vivre sans fromage.», which means "I can't live without cheese." This is a common way to say a food is very important to you. Notice that both lines name a specific food, so you can keep the same pattern and change only the food word you have learned. For a negative opinion, use «Je ne suis pas fan de la nourriture épicée.», which means "I'm not a fan of spicy food." This is softer than saying you hate something. When you practice, say each line slowly first, then at a natural speed. Keep the food word clear, because that is the main information your listener needs.
Ask and answer about spicy food and eating out
Now practice a short exchange. Speaker A asks «Tu aimes la cuisine épicée ?», which means "Do you like spicy food?" Speaker B answers with «Non, je ne suis pas fan. Je préfère les plats doux.», which means "No, I'm not a fan. I prefer mild dishes." The answer first gives a negative opinion, then gives a preference. Speaker A then asks «Et tu aimes manger au restaurant ?», which means "And do you like eating out?" Speaker B answers with «Oui, j'adore ça, mais je ne peux pas vivre sans pâtes !», which means "Yes, I love it, but I can't live without pasta!" This answer agrees, then adds a strong positive statement about a different food. In the exchange, the questions come first and the answers come second. If you swap roles, you change who reads A and who reads B, but the order stays the same: question, answer, question, answer. The line «J'aime bien manger au restaurant.» means "I like eating out at restaurants" and can be used as a simple positive statement about eating out.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Yes, I love it, but I can't live without pasta!Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided exchange: ask about spicy food
You will read both parts of a short exchange. First read Speaker A, then read Speaker B. Use the recording references to check the native lines.
Your task: Read Speaker A's question «Tu aimes la cuisine épicée ?». Say each line clearly. If you are practicing with a partner, one person reads A and the other reads B.
Reply comprehension: choose the matching answer
Read the question below and choose the best answer from the options. All options are based on the recorded lines.
Your task: Question: «Tu aimes la cuisine épicée ?». Which reply matches? Option 1: «Non, je ne suis pas fan. Je préfère les plats doux.». Option 2: «J'adore les pâtes.». Option 3: «J'aime bien manger au restaurant.».
Recall with correct roles
Cover the recording references. You will rebuild the exchange from memory, keeping the correct roles and order.
Your task: Speaker A asks about spicy food. Speaker B gives a negative opinion and a preference for mild dishes. Speaker A asks about eating out. Speaker B agrees and adds a strong positive statement about pasta. Say the full exchange aloud. Then uncover the references and compare your version with «Tu aimes la cuisine épicée ?», «Non, je ne suis pas fan. Je préfère les plats doux.», «Et tu aimes manger au restaurant ?», and «Oui, j'adore ça, mais je ne peux pas vivre sans pâtes !».
Common questions
Can I practice alone if I do not have a partner?
Yes. You can read both roles yourself. Read Speaker A's question, then Speaker B's answer, then Speaker A's next question, then Speaker B's answer. You can also play the audio and repeat after each line. There is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys and success criteria to check your own speaking.
What should I do if I forget a line during the recall exercise?
Pause and try to remember the meaning first: a question about spicy food, a negative opinion with a preference, a question about eating out, and an answer with agreement and a strong positive statement. If you still need help, uncover the recording references and read the line again. Then cover them and repeat the full exchange from the beginning.
