Beginner speaking practice for French party small talk: ask if someone knows the host, how they know the host, and comment on the music.

At a party, you often meet someone new. A simple question about the host or the music can start a friendly conversation. In this workshop, you will practice short French lines for that situation. You will hear a question, choose a good reply, and then say both roles yourself. The recordings give you the exact phrases to use for the host question, the follow-up, the music comment, and the positive reply. Listen, repeat, and try each task aloud.

    Starting with the host question

A light way to begin is to ask if the other person knows the host. The line «Vous connaissez l'hôte ?» means 'Do you know the host?' Use it with one person you do not know. The word 'l'hôte' can mean host or hostess. After the person answers, you can ask for more detail with «Comment vous connaissez l'hôte ?», which means 'How do you know the host?' This shows interest and keeps the talk going. In the recorded exchange, one speaker says «Bonjour, vous connaissez l'hôte ?», and the other replies «Oui, je suis un ami d'enfance. Et vous ?». Notice that the reply gives a reason and then asks 'Et vous ?' to return the question. You can answer with a simple reason, such as working with the host, as in «Moi, je travaille avec elle. Super musique, non ?». Keep your voice calm and friendly. A small smile helps too.

    Commenting on the music

Music is an easy topic at a party. The line «Super musique, non ?» means 'Great music, right?' The tag 'non ?' invites the other person to agree. In the recorded exchange, after the host question, the speaker says «Moi, je travaille avec elle. Super musique, non ?», which includes the music comment. The other person answers with «Oui, j'adore ! C'est sympa ici.», meaning 'Yes, I love it! It's nice here.' This reply agrees and adds a small comment about the place. When you practice, say the music line with a rising tone on 'non ?' to make it a question. Then listen for a positive reply. You do not need to talk about the music in detail. A short comment and a simple answer are enough to keep the conversation moving.

    Asking who someone came with

Another useful question from the lesson is «Vous êtes venu(e) avec qui ?», which means 'Who did you come with?' Ask this after you have started talking. It helps you find common ground. The written form 'venu(e)' shows a feminine ending, but the pronunciation is the same. This line is not part of the recorded exchange on this page, so treat it as an extra question you can add when you feel ready. Keep the question simple and listen for a name or a short answer. If you do not understand, you can ask the person to repeat. The goal is not to ask every question. The goal is to choose one or two lines and say them clearly. Practice each line aloud several times before you try the full exchange.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    Bonjour, vous connaissez l'hôte ?

Hello, do you know the host?
    B

Oui, je suis un ami d'enfance. Et vous ?

Yes, I'm a childhood friend. And you?
    A

Moi, je travaille avec elle. Super musique, non ?

Me, I work with her. Great music, right?
    B

    Oui, j'adore ! C'est sympa ici.

Yes, I love it! It's nice here.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: ask about the host

Imagine you are at a party. You see someone you do not know. You want to start a conversation. Use the recorded lines to guide you.

Your task: First, listen to «Bonjour, vous connaissez l'hôte ?» and repeat it aloud. Then listen to «Oui, je suis un ami d'enfance. Et vous ?» and repeat it. Now say the two lines in order: one as the first speaker, one as the second speaker. Then change roles and say them again. Finally, add «Comment vous connaissez l'hôte ?» after the first line and answer it with the recorded reason «Moi, je travaille avec elle.».

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the music response

You hear someone comment on the music. You need to choose a good reply from the recorded lines.

Your task: Listen to «Moi, je travaille avec elle. Super musique, non ?». It ends with a music comment. Now listen to «Oui, j'adore ! C'est sympa ici.». Which line is a positive reply to the music comment? Say the reply aloud. Then listen to «Super musique, non ?» and say it as a question. After that, answer your own question with «Oui, j'adore ! C'est sympa ici.». Repeat the pair two times.

    3

Recall and role swap: host and music talk

Now you will remember the lines without looking. Imagine the same party scene. One person asks about the host and the music. The other person answers.

Your task: Say the first speaker's lines from memory: start with «Bonjour, vous connaissez l'hôte ?», then add «Moi, je travaille avec elle. Super musique, non ?». Then say the second speaker's lines: give the reason «Oui, je suis un ami d'enfance. Et vous ?» and agree about the music with «Oui, j'adore ! C'est sympa ici.». After that, swap roles and do it again. Use only the recorded lines you have practiced.

    Common questions

Can I use these lines with someone I already know?

Yes, but the host question is most useful with someone new. If you already know the person, you can still comment on the music with the recorded line. The reply line also works in many friendly situations. Listen to the recordings and choose the line that fits your moment.

What if the other person answers with a long sentence I do not understand?

You do not need to understand every word. Listen for a name, a reason, or a positive tone. You can reply with a simple line you have practiced, such as the music comment «Super musique, non ?». If you need help, you can ask the person to repeat. Keep your answer short and friendly.
