In this workshop you will practice making plans in French. You will learn how to ask if someone is free, suggest an activity, propose a time, accept with pleasure, and agree on a final plan. Each example comes from a short recording. Listen carefully, repeat aloud, and then try the exercises. You can play both roles: the person inviting and the person responding. This is active speaking practice, so speak clearly and at a natural speed. If you make a mistake, pause and try again. The goal is to feel comfortable using these phrases in a real conversation.
Inviting Someone and Suggesting an Activity
To invite a friend, start by asking if they are free. A simple way is «Tu es libre samedi ?». This means 'Are you free on Saturday?' Notice the informal 'tu' form. If you want to suggest an activity, you can say «Ça te dit d'aller au cinéma ?». This means 'Do you feel like going to the movies?' The phrase 'Ça te dit' is a common way to ask if someone is interested. When you suggest a time, you can use «On pourrait se retrouver à 18h ?». This means 'Could we meet at 6 PM?' The word 'on pourrait' means 'we could', which is polite and soft. Practice saying these phrases out loud. Pay attention to the rhythm and the liaison between words.
Accepting, Declining, and Agreeing on Details
If you like the idea, you can accept warmly with «Oui, avec plaisir !». This means 'Yes, with pleasure!' It shows enthusiasm. In a longer conversation, you might hear a dialogue like this: one person says «Salut ! Tu es libre samedi après-midi ?», which means 'Hi! Are you free Saturday afternoon?' The other replies «Oui, je pense. Qu'est-ce que tu veux faire ?», meaning 'Yes, I think so. What do you want to do?' Then the first suggests «Ça te dit d'aller au parc et de pique-niquer ?», 'Do you feel like going to the park and having a picnic?' The second agrees and suggests a meeting point with «Bonne idée ! On pourrait se retrouver à 15h devant l'entrée ?», 'Good idea! Could we meet at 3 PM in front of the entrance?' The first confirms and adds a request with «Parfait. Apporte quelque chose à boire, d'accord ?», 'Perfect. Bring something to drink, okay?' Finally, the second agrees and says goodbye with «D'accord ! À samedi !», 'Okay! See you Saturday!' Notice how they negotiate details like time and place. Practice both roles.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Okay! See you Saturday!Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided Exchange: Invite a Friend
Imagine you are talking to a friend named Alex. You want to invite Alex to do something on Saturday. Use the phrases from the recordings to build a short conversation.
Your task: First, as Speaker A, say «Salut ! Tu es libre samedi après-midi ?». Then, as Speaker B, answer «Oui, je pense. Qu'est-ce que tu veux faire ?». Continue as Speaker A with «Ça te dit d'aller au parc et de pique-niquer ?». Say all three lines aloud in source order.
Reply Comprehension: Understand the Plan
Listen to the six dialogue lines. They form a conversation between two people making plans. You will hear one person invite and the other respond.
Your task: After listening, answer these questions: In «Oui, je pense. Qu'est-ce que tu veux faire ?», does the person think they are free, or say they are unavailable? In «Bonne idée ! On pourrait se retrouver à 15h devant l'entrée ?», what time do they suggest meeting? In «Parfait. Apporte quelque chose à boire, d'accord ?», what does the speaker ask the other to bring? Say your answers out loud in English.
Recall and Role-Play: Plan a Picnic
Work with a partner or imagine both roles yourself. You will recreate the six-line recorded conversation about making plans and a picnic in the park.
Your task: One person starts with «Salut ! Tu es libre samedi après-midi ?». The other answers «Oui, je pense. Qu'est-ce que tu veux faire ?». Continue with «Ça te dit d'aller au parc et de pique-niquer ?», «Bonne idée ! On pourrait se retrouver à 15h devant l'entrée ?», «Parfait. Apporte quelque chose à boire, d'accord ?», and «D'accord ! À samedi !». Perform the whole dialogue out loud in this order.
Common questions
What is the difference between 'tu' and 'vous' in these phrases?
In the recordings, the phrases use 'tu', which is informal and used with friends, family, or peers. If you are talking to someone you don't know well, or to more than one person, you should use 'vous'. For example, instead of «Tu es libre samedi ?», you would say 'Vous êtes libre samedi ?' The rest of the phrase stays the same. The same applies to «Ça te dit d'aller au cinéma ?»: 'Ça vous dit d'aller au cinéma ?'
How do I accept an invitation in these recordings?
Use «Oui, avec plaisir !» to accept warmly. In the longer exchange, «Oui, je pense. Qu'est-ce que tu veux faire ?» accepts that the person is free and asks what to do, while «Bonne idée ! On pourrait se retrouver à 15h devant l'entrée ?» accepts the activity and proposes a time and place.
