In this workshop you practise a short shop exchange in French about buying an envelope. You will say what you need, hear a question about size, and choose a reply that fits. Each native line is recorded, so you can listen, repeat, and check your understanding before you speak. The tasks move from guided speaking to listening comprehension, then to recall with the roles swapped.

    Saying what you need

Start with the simplest way to state your need. The line «J'ai besoin d'une enveloppe.» means "I need an envelope." It is direct and works when you want to be brief. A more polite option is «Je voudrais une enveloppe, s'il vous plaît.», which means "I would like an envelope, please." The added please makes it softer and is useful in a shop. If you already know the type you want, you can ask a question instead: «Vous avez des enveloppes DL ?» means "Do you have DL envelopes?" Here DL is the name of a common envelope size. You can also explain the purpose with «C'est pour envoyer une lettre en France.», which means "It's for sending a letter within France." This tells the other person why you need it, which can help them suggest a size. Practise saying each line aloud, then cover the English and say the French from memory.

    The shop exchange

Now put the lines into a short conversation. The customer opens with «Bonjour, je voudrais une enveloppe, s'il vous plaît.», which means "Hello, I would like an envelope, please." The member of staff replies with «Bien sûr. C'est pour quelle taille ?», meaning "Of course. What size is it for?" This is a question about the size you need, not about the number of envelopes. The customer answers with «C'est pour une lettre A4 pliée en trois.», which means "It's for an A4 letter folded in three." This explains the situation so the staff member can help. Then you need a DL. I also have C5 ones if you prefer." So the answer gives one suitable size and mentions another option. Notice that the customer does not name a size first; the size comes from the staff member after hearing what the envelope is for. When you practise, keep the order: greeting and request, question about size, explanation, suggestion.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Hello, I would like an envelope, please.
    B

Bien sûr. C'est pour quelle taille ?

Of course. What size is it for?
    A

It's for an A4 letter folded in three.
    B

Alors il vous faut une DL. J'ai aussi des C5 si vous préférez.

Then you need a DL. I also have C5 ones if you prefer.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided shop exchange

You are the customer in a small shop. You want to buy an envelope and you are ready to explain what it is for. Your partner plays the member of staff and uses the recorded lines.

Your task: Read the customer part aloud. When your partner asks «Bien sûr. If you are working alone, play the recording of «Bonjour, je voudrais une enveloppe, s'il vous plaît.» and «Bien sûr.

    2

    Choose the right reply

You hear a member of staff ask about the size of the envelope you want. You need to choose the customer reply that fits the question.

Your task: Listen to «Bien sûr. C'est pour quelle taille ?», which means "Of course. What size is it for?" Then choose the best customer reply: (a) «C'est pour envoyer une lettre en France.», which means "It's for sending a letter within France," or (b) «C'est pour une lettre A4 pliée en trois.», which means "It's for an A4 letter folded in three." Say your choice aloud, then say the full line.

    3

    Recall with roles swapped

You now play the member of staff. Your partner plays the customer. Use the recorded lines to check yourself after you speak.

Your task: As the member of staff, wait for the customer to say «Bonjour, je voudrais une enveloppe, s'il vous plaît.». Then say «Bien sûr. Do not change the order. If you are alone, play «Bonjour, je voudrais une enveloppe, s'il vous plaît.», pause and say «Bien sûr.

    Common questions

Do I need to know the envelope sizes before I practise?

No. The recorded lines introduce DL and C5 in context. You can repeat the sounds and use the English meanings to follow the exchange. The staff member suggests a size after hearing what the envelope is for, so you do not need to name a size yourself as the customer.

Can I practise alone without a partner?

Yes. Play the recording for one role, pause, and say the other role aloud. You can also play both roles yourself, but there is no automatic assessment, so check your speaking against the recorded lines.
