In this workshop you practise a short hotel check-in exchange in French. You will learn how to ask for the key to a specific room, how to ask for a key card instead, and how to understand a receptionist who gives you the card and explains where the room is. You can play both the guest and the receptionist. Listen to each recording, repeat it aloud, then try the three tasks. Speaking a little every day helps more than reading silently, so say every line out loud.

    Asking for the key

A polite way to ask for a key is a full question. Listen to «Est-ce que je peux avoir la clé de la chambre 205 ?» and repeat it slowly. The line means: Can I have the key to room 205? The word 'clé' means key. A shorter, very common option at the desk is «La clé de la chambre 205, s'il vous plaît.», which means: The key to room 205, please. Notice that 's'il vous plaît' makes the request polite. Practise both lines until you can say them without looking. Then change only the room number in your head and say the sentence again.

    Key or key card

Some hotels use a card instead of a metal key. To ask for that, use «Je peux avoir la carte de la chambre 205 ?», which means: Can I have the key card for room 205? The word 'carte' means card. When the receptionist hands it over, you may hear «Voici votre carte-clé. La chambre est au deuxième étage.», which means: Here is your key card. The room is on the second floor. In French, 'deuxième étage' is the floor above the ground floor. Listen for the room location and repeat the line. If you only need to understand the reply, focus on 'voici' (here is) and the floor.

    A full check-in exchange

Now put the lines together. A guest arrives and says «Bonjour, j'ai une réservation au nom de Martin.», which means: Hello, I have a reservation under the name Martin. The receptionist answers with «Bonjour. Oui, chambre 205. Voici votre carte-clé.», which means: Hello. Yes, room 205. Here is your key card. The guest thanks the receptionist and asks again with «Merci. Est-ce que je peux avoir la clé de la chambre 205 ?», which means: Thank you. Can I have the key to room 205? The receptionist confirms and gives an instruction with «Oui, c'est ça. Insérez la carte dans la serrure, puis retirez-la.», which means: Yes, that's it. Insert the card in the lock, then remove it. Listen to the whole exchange, then take one role and say your lines aloud.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

Bonjour, j'ai une réservation au nom de Martin.

Hello, I have a reservation under the name Martin.
    B

Bonjour. Oui, chambre 205. Voici votre carte-clé.

Oui, c'est ça. Insérez la carte dans la serrure, puis retirez-la.

Yes, that's it. Insert the card in the lock, then remove it.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided exchange at the desk

You are the guest at a hotel reception. You have a reservation and you want the key to room 205. The receptionist will speak first.

Your task: Listen to «Bonjour. Oui, chambre 205. Voici votre carte-clé.» as the receptionist. Then say your line asking for the key. Use the full question from «Est-ce que je peux avoir la clé de la chambre 205 ?». After that, listen to «Oui, c'est ça. Insérez la carte dans la serrure, puis retirez-la.» and repeat the instruction about the card.

    2

    Understand the receptionist's reply

The receptionist gives you a key card and tells you where the room is. You need to understand two pieces of information: what you receive and where the room is.

Your task: Listen to «Voici votre carte-clé. La chambre est au deuxième étage.» once. Then choose the correct meaning: (a) Here is your key card. The room is on the second floor. (b) The room is on the ground floor. (c) The key is at the desk. Say your answer aloud, then listen again to check.

    3

Recall the lines with correct roles

You will now remember the exchange without reading. One person is the guest and one is the receptionist. You can play both roles.

Your task: Say the guest's greeting and reservation line from «Bonjour, j'ai une réservation au nom de Martin.». Then say the receptionist's reply from «Bonjour. Oui, chambre 205. Voici votre carte-clé.». Next, say the guest's request from «Merci. Est-ce que je peux avoir la clé de la chambre 205 ?». Finally, say the receptionist's instruction from «Oui, c'est ça. Insérez la carte dans la serrure, puis retirez-la.». Try to do this without looking at the text.

    Common questions

What is the difference between 'la clé' and 'la carte'?

'La clé' means a key, often a traditional metal key. 'La carte' means a card, such as a key card. Some hotels use 'carte-clé' for a key card. You can ask for either one at the desk, and the receptionist will understand.

How do I ask politely for the key in French?

Use the pattern 'Est-ce que je peux avoir... ?' followed by the item. For example: 'Est-ce que je peux avoir la clé de la chambre 205 ?' You can also add 's'il vous plaît' at the end. This polite form is safest at check-in.
