In this workshop you will practice asking where the restroom is in French and understanding a simple spoken answer. You will work with short, natural lines that are useful in cafés, museums, and other public places. The focus is on speaking clearly, listening for key words, and keeping your tone polite. You do not need to invent new sentences; you will use the exact lines provided and change only your role. Before each task, read the English meaning so you know what you are saying. Then say the line aloud, slowly at first, and repeat it until it feels comfortable. When you listen, pay attention to the words for place and direction. This workshop adds active speaking and listening practice to the source lesson.

    Asking Politely

A direct question works in many public places. The line «Où sont les toilettes ?» means "Where is the restroom?" It is short and clear. When you speak to staff or a stranger, a polite version is often better. The line «Excusez-moi, où sont les toilettes, s'il vous plaît ?» means "Excuse me, where is the restroom, please?" The beginning softens the request, and the ending adds courtesy. Practice both lines aloud. Keep your voice calm and friendly. In a private home, people may use a different word for the bathroom. The line «Où est la salle de bain ?» means "Where is the bathroom?" This is useful when you are a guest in someone's home. In public places, the first two lines are usually the ones you need. Say each line slowly, then at a natural speed.

    Understanding the Answer

When you ask, you may hear a short direction. The line «Les toilettes sont au fond à droite.» means "The restrooms are at the back on the right." Two parts matter here. The first part tells you the location: at the back. The second part tells you the side: on the right. This is a location, not an instruction to turn right. Listen for the place word and the side word. If you hear this answer, you can look toward the back of the room or building and then to your right. In a short exchange, someone may also ask about a code. The line «Merci. Et il y a un code ?» means "Thank you. And is there a code?" The answer «Oui, le code est sur le ticket.» means "Yes, the code is on the receipt." These lines show a simple follow-up question and answer. You can practice listening for the word for code and the word for receipt.

    Putting the Exchange Together

A full exchange can be very short. One person asks politely, and the other person gives a direction. The line «Excusez-moi, où sont les toilettes, s'il vous plaît ?» means "Excuse me, where is the restroom, please?" The line «Les toilettes sont au fond à droite.» means "The restrooms are at the back on the right." Together they form a complete question-and-answer pair. In the next part, one person says thank you and asks about a code, and the other person answers. The line «Merci. Et il y a un code ?» means "Thank you. And is there a code?" The line «Oui, le code est sur le ticket.» means "Yes, the code is on the receipt." When you practice, take one role at a time. Say your line aloud, then listen to the other line. This helps you connect the question with the answer. You can also cover the text and try to remember your line before you say it.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Ask and Answer

You are in a café and have ordered a coffee. You need to find the restroom. You will play both roles, one after the other. Read the English meaning before you speak.

Your task: First, play the customer. Say the polite question «Excusez-moi, où sont les toilettes, s'il vous plaît ?». Then play the staff member. Say the direction «Les toilettes sont au fond à droite.». Repeat the pair three times. Then switch: start with the direct question «Où sont les toilettes ?» and answer with the same direction «Les toilettes sont au fond à droite.». Say each line slowly, then at a natural speed.

    2

Listen and Choose the Right Direction

You will hear a short answer and decide what it means. The answer is a location, not an instruction to turn right.

Your task: Listen to the line «Les toilettes sont au fond à droite.». It means "The restrooms are at the back on the right." Now choose the correct meaning: A) The restrooms are at the back on the right. B) Turn right at the front. C) The restrooms are at the front on the left. Say your choice aloud. Then listen again and repeat the line «Les toilettes sont au fond à droite.» exactly. If you cannot hear the audio, read the line aloud yourself.

    3

Recall the Exchange with Correct Roles

You will remember a short exchange between two people. One person asks, and the other answers. Then one person asks about a code.

Your task: Cover the text. Say the polite question from memory: «Excusez-moi, où sont les toilettes, s'il vous plaît ?». Then say the direction from memory: «Les toilettes sont au fond à droite.». Next, say the follow-up question from memory: «Merci. Et il y a un code ?». Finally, say the answer from memory: «Oui, le code est sur le ticket.». After you try, uncover the lines and check yourself. Then say the whole exchange again, keeping the roles correct: the customer asks, and the staff member answers.

    Common questions

What is the difference between the two question lines?

The line «Où sont les toilettes ?» is a direct question: "Where is the restroom?" The line «Excusez-moi, où sont les toilettes, s'il vous plaît ?» is more polite: "Excuse me, where is the restroom, please?" Use the polite version with staff or strangers. Both are useful, and both are short enough to say clearly.

How do I understand the direction line?

The line «Les toilettes sont au fond à droite.» means "The restrooms are at the back on the right." It gives a location: at the back, on the right. It is not an instruction to turn right. Listen for the place word and the side word, then look toward the back and to your right.

When should I use « Où est la salle de bain ? » instead?

Use « Où est la salle de bain ? » when you are in a private home. It means "Where is the bathroom?" In public places like cafés or museums, « Où sont les toilettes ? » is the usual term. The source lesson notes that 'salle de bain' often implies a room with a bathtub or shower.
