In this workshop you practise a short, realistic exchange about getting medical help in French. You will use recorded native lines to ask for a doctor, understand where to go, and check whether an appointment is needed. Each recorded line is explained in English before you use it, so you always know what you are saying and hearing. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys to check yourself.
Asking for medical help
Start with the simplest way to say what you need. The line «J'ai besoin de voir un médecin.» means "I need to see a doctor." Use it when you want to state your need clearly. If you also want to find a place, the line «Où est le cabinet médical le plus proche ?» means "Where is the nearest doctor's office?" and the line «Où est l'hôpital le plus proche ?» means "Where is the nearest hospital?" These are direct questions you can ask a passer-by or someone at a reception desk. When you want to check whether a pharmacy is available right now, the line «Est-ce qu'il y a une pharmacie ouverte maintenant ?» means "Is there a pharmacy open now?" Practise saying each line slowly, then at a natural speed. Keep your voice calm and polite; a short greeting before your request is common and useful.
A short exchange: asking and understanding the reply
Now put the lines into a short scene. You are the person asking for help. You begin with the line «Bonjour, excusez-moi. J'ai besoin de voir un médecin.», which means "Hello, excuse me. I need to see a doctor." The other person answers with the line «D'accord. Il y a un cabinet médical au bout de la rue, à droite.», which means "All right. There's a doctor's office at the end of the street, on the right." Notice that this reply gives both a location and a side: the office is at the end of the street, on the right. That is different from an instruction to turn right. You then ask a follow-up question with the line «Merci. Est-ce qu'il faut prendre rendez-vous ?», which means "Thank you. Do I need to make an appointment?" The reply is the line «Oui, normalement. Sinon, il y a une clinique sans rendez-vous près de la gare.», which means "Yes, normally. Otherwise, there's a walk-in clinic near the station." This answer tells you that an appointment is usually needed, and it offers another option near the station. Listen for the word that signals the alternative option, and keep the subject of the question in mind: you are still asking about seeing a doctor.
Roles, order, and self-checking
In the recorded exchange, one speaker asks for help and the other gives information. If you swap roles with a partner, the order of the conversation stays the same: greeting and request, then reply, then follow-up question, then answer. Only who reads each part changes. When you practise alone, play the recording and repeat the line for the role you are practising. Then play it again and try to say your line just before the recording does. Check yourself against the English meanings given above. If you are unsure whether a reply is about a location or an instruction to turn, look at the wording: a location tells you where something is, while an instruction tells you to turn. Use the answer keys in the exercises to confirm what you heard.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.
Bonjour, excusez-moi. J'ai besoin de voir un médecin.
Hello, excuse me. I need to see a doctor.D'accord. Il y a un cabinet médical au bout de la rue, à droite.
All right. There's a doctor's office at the end of the street, on the right.Merci. Est-ce qu'il faut prendre rendez-vous ?
Thank you. Do I need to make an appointment?Oui, normalement. Sinon, il y a une clinique sans rendez-vous près de la gare.
Yes, normally. Otherwise, there's a walk-in clinic near the station.Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided exchange: ask for a doctor
You are in a French-speaking town and you need medical help. You will play the person asking. Use the recorded lines to guide your speaking.
Your task: Say the line «Bonjour, excusez-moi. J'ai besoin de voir un médecin.» to open the exchange. Then listen to the reply «D'accord. Il y a un cabinet médical au bout de la rue, à droite.» and repeat it once. After that, ask your follow-up question with the line «Merci. Est-ce qu'il faut prendre rendez-vous ?». Finally, listen to the answer «Oui, normalement. Sinon, il y a une clinique sans rendez-vous près de la gare.» and repeat it once.
Reply comprehension: choose the right response
You will hear or read a question and choose the reply that matches it. All the replies come from the recorded lines.
Your task: Question: someone says the line «Où est le cabinet médical le plus proche ?», which means "Where is the nearest doctor's office?" Which reply fits? Option A: the line «D'accord. Il y a un cabinet médical au bout de la rue, à droite.», which means "All right. There's a doctor's office at the end of the street, on the right." Option B: the line «Est-ce qu'il y a une pharmacie ouverte maintenant ?», which means "Is there a pharmacy open now?" Choose A or B.
Recall with correct roles
You will rebuild the short exchange from memory, keeping the correct roles and the same order. Use the recorded lines as your model.
Your task: Without looking at the lines, say the opening request that means "Hello, excuse me. I need to see a doctor." Then say the reply that means "All right. There's a doctor's office at the end of the street, on the right." Then ask the follow-up question that means "Thank you. Do I need to make an appointment?" Finally, give the answer that means "Yes, normally. Otherwise, there's a walk-in clinic near the station."
Common questions
Can I practise this workshop alone without a partner?
Yes. Play each recording and repeat the line for the role you are practising. Then play it again and try to say your line just before the recording does. You can also read both roles aloud, but keep the same order: request, reply, follow-up question, answer. There is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys and success criteria to check yourself.
What is the difference between a location on the right and an instruction to turn right?
A location on the right tells you where something is, for example the doctor's office at the end of the street, on the right, as in the line «D'accord. Il y a un cabinet médical au bout de la rue, à droite.». An instruction to turn right tells you to change direction. In this workshop, the recorded reply gives a location, not a turning instruction, so do not treat it as a command to turn.
