When you stay in a French-speaking place, breakfast can be part of your room price or an extra charge. In this workshop you will practise polite questions to ask at reception and learn to understand the answers. You will hear short, clear examples and then try three tasks: a guided exchange, a reply comprehension choice, and a recall task where you play both roles. You do not need to invent new phrases; everything you need is in the examples. Take your time, repeat the lines aloud, and check your answers at the end of each task.
Asking if breakfast is included
The most direct way to ask if breakfast is included is a short question with the words for breakfast and included. You can also ask if it is included in the price. Both are polite and common at hotel reception. Listen to the examples and notice the word order. In the first example, the subject and verb are inverted, which is common in careful speech. The second example uses a word that means included in the price. Repeat each line slowly, then a little faster. Pay attention to the link between words so the question sounds natural. When you ask, a simple rising intonation at the end is enough; you do not need to add extra words. If you want to be very clear, you can start with a greeting such as hello, but the question itself is already polite.
Asking about times and extra charges
After you know breakfast is included, you may want to know when it is served. Use the question that starts with the words for at what time. The answer often begins with the word for from and gives a start and end time. If you are worried about an extra charge, ask if breakfast is extra. The phrase for extra charge is short and easy to remember. In a longer conversation, you might also hear about the type of breakfast, such as a buffet or a continental breakfast. You can ask which one it is by offering two choices. Finally, you may hear that breakfast in your room is possible for a small extra charge. You do not need to decide immediately; you can simply thank the person and think about it.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Bonjour, le petit-déjeuner est-il inclus dans le prix de la chambre ?

Yes, it is included. It is served from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.Très bien. C'est un buffet ou un petit-déjeuner continental ?
Very good. Is it a buffet or a continental breakfast?C'est un buffet. Si vous voulez, le petit-déjeuner en chambre est possible pour 5 euros de plus.
It is a buffet. If you want, breakfast in your room is possible for 5 euros more.Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided exchange at reception
Imagine you are at a hotel reception in a French-speaking town. You want to know if breakfast is included in your room price. The receptionist is friendly and speaks clearly.
Your task: First, listen to the question «Le petit-déjeuner est-il inclus ?» and repeat it aloud. Then listen to the question «Le petit-déjeuner est compris dans le prix ?» and repeat it. Choose one of these two questions to ask the receptionist. After you ask, listen to the reply «Oui, il est inclus. Il est servi de 7 h à 10 h 30.». Then ask about the time using «À quelle heure est servi le petit-déjeuner ?». Finally, ask if breakfast is extra using «Le petit-déjeuner est-il en supplément ?». Say all your questions aloud in order.
Understand the reply: buffet or extra charge?
You have asked about breakfast and the receptionist gives you more details. You need to understand what type of breakfast it is and whether there is an extra charge for room service.
Your task: Listen to the receptionist's reply «C'est un buffet. Si vous voulez, le petit-déjeuner en chambre est possible pour 5 euros de plus.». Then answer these two questions in English: 1) Is the breakfast a buffet or a continental breakfast? 2) Is there an extra charge for breakfast in your room, and if so, how much? After you answer, listen again and repeat the reply aloud.
Recall and role-play both sides
You will now play both the guest and the receptionist. Use the recorded lines as your script. This helps you remember the questions and the answers.
Your task: First, play the guest. Say the question «Bonjour, le petit-déjeuner est-il inclus dans le prix de la chambre ?» aloud. Then play the receptionist and say the reply «Oui, il est inclus. Il est servi de 7 h à 10 h 30.» aloud. Next, play the guest again and ask about the type of breakfast using «Très bien. C'est un buffet ou un petit-déjeuner continental ?». Finally, play the receptionist and give the reply «C'est un buffet. Si vous voulez, le petit-déjeuner en chambre est possible pour 5 euros de plus.». Do this without looking at the text if you can. If you forget a line, listen to the recording again and repeat.
Common questions
Do I need to use the exact words from the recordings?
The recordings give you natural, polite ways to ask and answer. You can use them as they are. If you want to change a word, make sure you keep the same structure. For example, you can ask about a different meal by changing the word for breakfast, but the rest of the question can stay the same. Practise the recorded lines first so you feel confident.
What if I don't understand the receptionist's answer?
You can politely ask the person to repeat or speak more slowly. A simple phrase like 'Pouvez-vous répéter, s'il vous plaît ?' means 'Can you repeat, please?' You can also repeat the part you understood and ask about the rest. In this workshop, focus on the recorded replies. Listen to them several times and read the English translation to check your understanding.
