This workshop gives you active speaking practice for a simple ATM visit in Chinese. You will ask whether the machine accepts foreign cards, say that you want to withdraw cash, follow the card and PIN prompts, and ask how much the fee is. Each native line is shown with its English meaning before you practice it, so you always know what you are saying. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys to check yourself.
Asking About the Machine and Saying What You Need
Start with the question that checks whether the machine is useful to you. «这台取款机可以用外国卡吗？» means "Can this ATM use foreign cards?" Use it when you are standing in front of the machine and are not sure it accepts your card. When you are ready to state your purpose, «我想取现金。» means "I want to withdraw cash." Say it clearly before you do anything else at the machine. In the recorded exchange, the customer greets the staff member and asks the same question: «您好，这台取款机可以用外国卡吗？» means "Hello, can this ATM use foreign cards?" The staff member answers with a yes and then gives the steps: «可以。请插卡，然后输入密码。» means "Yes. Please insert your card, then enter your PIN." Notice that the answer comes first, and the instructions follow. Practice the question, the statement of purpose, and the staff reply as three separate speaking moves.
Following the Prompts and Asking About the Fee
The machine and the staff give short instructions. «请插卡。» means "Please insert your card." «请输入密码。» means "Please enter your PIN." These are prompts, so do them in the order you hear them: card first, then PIN. When you want to know the cost before continuing, ask about it directly. In the recorded exchange, the customer says «我想取现金。手续费是多少？», which means "I want to withdraw cash. How much is the fee?" The staff member replies with the amount and the next action: «每笔十元。请按确认。» means "Ten yuan per transaction. Please press confirm." The reply gives the fee first and the instruction second. Keep the same order when you practice: ask about the fee, listen for the amount, then follow the final instruction.

Guided Exchange at the ATM
You are a customer at an ATM. A staff member is standing nearby. You will ask whether the machine accepts foreign cards, say you want to withdraw cash, and ask about the fee. The staff member will answer and give instructions.
Your task: Read the customer part aloud, then read the staff part aloud. Customer: «您好，这台取款机可以用外国卡吗？» Staff: «可以。请插卡，然后输入密码。» Customer: «我想取现金。手续费是多少？» Staff: «每笔十元。请按确认。» After reading, cover the staff lines and say them from memory.
Choose the Right Reply
You will hear or read a customer line and choose the staff reply that fits. The customer has just asked whether the ATM accepts foreign cards and then said they want to withdraw cash and asked about the fee.
Your task: Customer: «您好，这台取款机可以用外国卡吗？» Which staff reply fits? A: «可以。请插卡，然后输入密码。» B: «每笔十元。请按确认。» Customer: «我想取现金。手续费是多少？» Which staff reply fits? A: «可以。请插卡，然后输入密码。» B: «每笔十元。请按确认。» Say your choice aloud, then say the full reply.
Recall the Exchange with Correct Roles
You will recall the whole exchange from memory. One person is the customer and one person is the staff member. If you are alone, say both parts aloud, but keep the roles clear in your mind.
Your task: Customer starts with the greeting and the question about foreign cards. Staff answers and gives the card and PIN steps. Customer says they want to withdraw cash and asks about the fee. Staff gives the fee and says to press confirm. Say the whole exchange aloud without looking at the lines.
Common questions
Can I practice both the customer and staff parts by myself?
Yes. You can read the customer lines aloud and then read the staff lines aloud, or play the audio and speak along with one role. There is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys and success criteria to check your own speaking.
What should I say first at the ATM?
Start with the question about foreign cards, «这台取款机可以用外国卡吗？», or the greeting version «您好，这台取款机可以用外国卡吗？» if a staff member is present. After you know the machine is usable, say that you want to withdraw cash with «我想取现金。». When you need the cost, ask «手续费是多少？»; in the recorded exchange the customer combines the purpose and fee question as «我想取现金。手续费是多少？».
