In this workshop you will practice a short, polite exchange about relationships. You will learn how to say you are single, how to say you have a partner, how to ask someone whether they have a partner, and how to answer that you do not have a partner yet. You will also practice a short student-to-student conversation where one person asks and the other answers. Each native line is given with its English meaning before you use it, so you can speak with understanding rather than guessing.
Saying Your Relationship Status
Start with two short statements about yourself. «我是单身。» means "I'm single." Use it when you want to say clearly that you do not currently have a partner. «我有对象。» means "I have a partner." Use it when you want to say that you are in a relationship. These are simple statements, so keep your voice calm and even. Do not add extra information that you have not practiced. If you are not sure which one is true for you, choose one for the practice and say it out loud several times. The goal is to make the sentence feel natural, not to discuss your real situation in detail.
Asking and Answering the Partner Question
Now practice the question and two possible answers. «你有对象吗?» means "Do you have a partner?" This is the question you ask when you want to know someone's relationship status. «我还没有对象。» means "I don't have a partner yet." The word "yet" makes the answer softer and suggests that this may change in the future. In the recorded exchange, one person asks the question and the other answers with «我还没有对象。 , which means "I don't have a partner yet. I'm single." Notice that the answer combines the "not yet" idea with the simple statement "I'm single." When you practice, say the question with a gentle rising tone at the end, and say the answer with a falling tone. Keep both lines short and clear.
A Short Student Exchange
The recordings also include a short conversation between two students. Speaker A begins with «你好,你是学生吗?», which means "Hello, are you a student?" Speaker B answers with «是,我是学生。你呢?», which means "Yes, I'm a student. And you?" Speaker A then replies with «我也是学生。你有对象吗?», which means "I'm a student too. Do you have a partner?" Speaker B finishes with «我还没有对象。 , which means "I don't have a partner yet. I'm single." This exchange shows a natural order: greeting and question, answer and return question, answer and new question, then final answer. When you practice, keep that order. If you switch roles, you change who reads each part, but the order of the conversation stays the same.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Checking available voices…
I'm single.
wǒ shì dān shēn。
I have a partner.
wǒ yǒu duì xiàng。
Do you have a partner?

I don't have a partner yet.
wǒ hái méi yǒu duì xiàng。
Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.
Hello, are you a student?
Yes, I'm a student. And you?
I'm a student too. Do you have a partner?
I don't have a partner yet. I'm single.Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided Exchange: Student to Student
You will practice the recorded student exchange with a partner or with the audio. One person plays Speaker A and the other plays Speaker B. If you are alone, read both roles aloud, but keep the order of the lines.
Your task: Speaker A says «你好,你是学生吗?». Speaker B replies with «是,我是学生。 Speaker A continues with «我也是学生。 Speaker B finishes with «我还没有对象。 . Read each line only after the previous line has been said. Then switch roles and repeat the same order.
Reply Comprehension: Choose the Matching Answer
You will hear or read a question and choose the answer that matches the recorded dialogue. The questions and answers come from the recorded lines. Read each choice carefully before you decide.
Your task: Question 1: Someone says «你有对象吗?». Which answer matches the recorded dialogue? Choice A: «我是单身。». Choice B: «你好,你是学生吗?». Question 2: Someone says «你好,你是学生吗?». Which answer matches the recorded dialogue? Choice B: «我有对象。». Which answer matches the recorded dialogue? . Choice B: «我还没有对象。».
Recall and Role Swap: Ask and Answer
You will now recall the lines without looking at them first. Work with a partner or use the audio. One person asks, the other answers. Then swap roles.
Your task: First round: Person 1 asks the partner question using «你有对象吗?». Person 2 answers with «我还没有对象。» and then adds «我是单身。». Second round: swap roles. The new asker uses «你有对象吗?», and the new answerer uses «我还没有对象。 . Keep the question before the answer in both rounds.
Common questions
What is the difference between saying I'm single and saying I don't have a partner yet?
«我是单身。» means "I'm single" and states your situation plainly. «我还没有对象。» means "I don't have a partner yet" and adds the idea that this may change later. Both can answer the partner question, but the "yet" answer sounds softer and more open.
Can I practice these lines alone if I do not have a speaking partner?
Yes. You can read both roles aloud and keep the recorded order: question first, then answer. You can also pause the audio after each line and repeat it. Use the answer key in the exercises to check yourself.
