Introduce Yourself in Chinese: First Meetings

Practice a simple first-meeting exchange in Chinese: say your name, where you are from, and what you like, then understand a partner's reply.

Free lesson path Phrase audioNo sign-up needed

In this workshop you build a short self-introduction you can use when meeting someone new. You will hear a model exchange between two speakers, then practice each part yourself. The focus is on three moves: giving your name, saying which country you are from, and naming something you like. You will also practice listening so you can understand a partner's answer and respond. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic scoring, so use the answer keys to check yourself.

The three moves of a simple introduction

A first meeting often follows a small pattern. First you greet and give your name. In the model exchange, one speaker opens with «你好,我叫 Alex。». The other speaker answers with a greeting, a name, and a question: «你好,我叫小丽。你是哪国人?». Notice that the question asks which country you are from, so your answer should name a country. Next, the first speaker gives two pieces of information and returns the question: «我是加拿大人。我喜欢徒步。你呢?». The phrase for liking something is useful here, and the country word answers the earlier question. Finally, the second speaker gives a country, a like, and a closing greeting: «我是中国人,我喜欢看书。很高兴认识你。». If you only need one short line for your name, you can use «我叫 Alex。». If you want to state your nationality or origin in a simple way, «我是加拿大人。» works, and «我来自加拿大。» is another way to say where you come from. To name a hobby, «我喜欢徒步。» shows the pattern for liking an activity. Keep each turn short and clear.

    Listening for the key words

When someone introduces themselves, you do not need to catch every sound. Listen for the name, the country, and the activity. In «你好,我叫小丽。你是哪国人?», the important parts are the greeting, the name, and the country question. In «我是加拿大人。我喜欢徒步。你呢?», listen for the country and the hobby, then notice the short question at the end that invites you to answer. In «我是中国人,我喜欢看书。很高兴认识你。», the speaker gives a country, an activity, and a friendly closing. The line «我是加拿大人。» tells you a nationality or origin, while «我来自加拿大。» tells you where someone comes from. The line «我喜欢徒步。» tells you an activity the speaker enjoys. If you hear a country word, you can answer with your own country. If you hear a hobby, you can answer with your own hobby. This kind of listening is about catching familiar pieces, not translating every word.

    Keeping your turn natural

A short introduction sounds friendly when you add a return question. After you say your name, country, or hobby, you can invite the other person to speak. The model exchange shows this clearly: «我是加拿大人。我喜欢徒步。你呢?» ends with a short question, and «我是中国人,我喜欢看书。很高兴认识你。» closes with a greeting. You can also open with just a name, as in «你好,我叫 Alex。», and let the other person ask more. If you want a very short answer for your name, use «我叫 Alex。». If you want to say your nationality or origin, use «我是加拿大人。» or «我来自加拿大。». If you want to mention an activity you enjoy, use «我喜欢徒步。». Speak slowly, keep eye contact, and pause after your question so the other person can answer. You do not need long sentences. Three short pieces, name, country, and hobby, are enough for a first meeting.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Checking available voices…

I'm Alex. / My name is Alex.

    wǒ jiào Alex

    我是加拿大人。

    I'm Canadian. / I'm from Canada.

    wǒ shì Jiānádà rén

    wǒ láizì Jiānádà

    我喜欢徒步。

    I love hiking. / I like hiking.

    wǒ xǐhuan túbù

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    你好,我叫 Alex。

    Hello, I'm Alex.
    B

    你好,我叫小丽。你是哪国人?

Hello, I'm Xiaoli. Which country are you from?
    A

    我是加拿大人。我喜欢徒步。你呢?

I'm Canadian. I like hiking. And you?
    B

    我是中国人,我喜欢看书。很高兴认识你。

Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: build your first turn

Imagine you meet a new classmate at a language school. You will speak first. Use the model lines to guide you, and say your turn out loud.

Your task: Greet the person and give your name using the pattern in «你好,我叫 Alex。». Then say which country you are from using «我是加拿大人。» or «我来自加拿大。». Then name an activity you like using «我喜欢徒步。». Finally, invite the other person to answer with the short question from «我是加拿大人。我喜欢徒步。你呢?». Record yourself or say it to a partner.

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the right answer

Imagine a partner has just introduced themselves. You will hear or read their line and choose how to answer. Use the recordings as your model.

Your task: Read or listen to «你好,我叫小丽。你是哪国人?». The speaker greets you, gives a name, and asks which country you are from. Choose the best reply: (a) give your name only, (b) give your country and a hobby, or (c) say goodbye. Then read or listen to «我是中国人,我喜欢看书。很高兴认识你。». The speaker gives a country, a hobby, and a closing greeting. Choose the best reply: (a) give your country and a hobby, then greet them back, (b) ask for their name again, or (c) say nothing.

    3

    Recall and switch roles

Now practice the full exchange from memory. You will play both roles, one after the other, using the model exchange as your guide.

Your task: First play the opening speaker. Use «你好,我叫 Alex。» as your model, then add your own name, country, and hobby, and end with the question from «我是加拿大人。我喜欢徒步。你呢?». Then switch roles. Play the second speaker. Use «你好,我叫小丽。你是哪国人?» as your model to greet, give a name, and ask the country question. Then answer your own first turn with a country, a hobby, and a closing greeting like «我是中国人,我喜欢看书。很高兴认识你。». Say both roles out loud.

    Common questions

Do I need to use every line in one introduction?

No. A first meeting can be very short. You can open with just a name, as in «你好,我叫 Alex。», and let the other person ask more. If you want to add more, you can say your country with «我是加拿大人。» or «我来自加拿大。», and name a hobby with «我喜欢徒步。». Choose the pieces that fit the moment.

What if I do not understand my partner's reply?

Listen for familiar pieces: a name, a country, or an activity. In «你好,我叫小丽。你是哪国人?», the key part is the country question. In «我是加拿大人。我喜欢徒步。你呢?», listen for the country and the hobby. In «我是中国人,我喜欢看书。很高兴认识你。», listen for the country, the hobby, and the closing greeting. If you catch one piece, you can respond to that piece and keep the conversation going.
