In this workshop you will practice a short, realistic metro ticket conversation in Chinese. You will learn how to ask for a ticket, say where you want to go, ask how much it costs, and understand a simple reply with a price and a ticket. The practice moves from a guided exchange to understanding a reply, and then to recalling the conversation with the correct roles. You can do this alone by reading both parts aloud, or with a partner by swapping roles.
Asking for a ticket and saying where you want to go
Start with a simple request. «请给我一张地铁票。» means that you are asking for one metro ticket. If you also want to greet the staff member first, you can use «你好,请给我一张地铁票。», which means hello, a metro ticket, please. After the staff member asks where you want to go, you can say your destination with «我要去……», which means I want to go to a place. For example, if you want to go to the city center, you can use «我要去市中心。多少钱?», which means I want to go to the city center and asks how much it is. Keep your voice calm and clear, and say the destination after the phrase.
Asking about price and stops, and understanding the reply
When you need the price, «到市中心多少钱?» means how much is it to the city center. If you want to know how many stops there are, «有几站?» means how many stops are there. In the reply, «五块。给你票。» means five yuan and here is your ticket. Listen for the price first, then the ticket. «好的,你要去哪里?» means okay, where do you want to go, so you know the staff member is asking for your destination. When you hear a number and then a ticket, you can understand that the price is given and the ticket is being handed to you.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Okay, where do you want to go?我要去市中心。多少钱?
I want to go to the city center. How much is it?五块。给你票。
Five yuan. Here is your ticket.Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided ticket exchange
You are at a metro station. You want one ticket to the city center. A partner or the audio plays the staff member.
Your task: Read your part aloud. Start with «你好,请给我一张地铁票。». When the staff member asks «好的,你要去哪里?», answer with «我要去市中心。多少钱?». Then listen for the reply. If you are alone, read both parts aloud in order.
Understand the reply
You hear a staff member say «五块。给你票。». You need to know what this reply means before you respond.
Your task: Choose the correct meaning of «五块。给你票。»: A) The ticket costs five yuan and the staff gives you the ticket. B) The staff asks where you want to go. C) The staff asks how many stops there are. Then say your choice aloud and explain it in English.
Recall the conversation with correct roles
You will now recall the whole exchange. One person is the traveler and one person is the staff member. If you are alone, read both roles aloud.
Your task: Traveler: say «你好,请给我一张地铁票。», then «我要去市中心。多少钱?». Staff member: say «好的,你要去哪里?», then «五块。给你票。». Keep the order: greeting and ticket request, staff question, traveler answer with destination and price question, staff reply with price and ticket. Then swap roles and repeat.
Common questions
Can I practice this alone without a partner?
Yes. Read both roles aloud in order. Use the audio or your own reading for the staff lines, and answer with the traveler lines. This helps you hear the question before you answer.
What should I listen for in the staff reply?
Listen for a price and then a ticket. In «五块。给你票。», the staff member says five yuan and gives you the ticket. That tells you the price and that the ticket is ready.
