When a Chinese sentence goes by too fast, you do not need to guess. You can pause the conversation and ask for clarification. In this workshop you will practice short clarification lines, hear a small dialogue about a plan, and choose the reply that matches what the speaker actually means. You will speak both roles, so you can practice asking and answering.
Useful clarification lines
These short lines help you slow a conversation down. «你是什么意思?» is a direct way to ask what someone means. «你的意思是……吗?» repeats or checks the meaning you think you heard. «我不太明白。» tells the other person that you do not quite understand. «你能再说一遍吗?» asks the person to say the same thing again. Use them when you need a moment, and keep your tone calm and friendly. You can use «你是什么意思?» or «我不太明白。» when the meaning is unclear, and «你能再说一遍吗?» when you heard the words but need them repeated.
A short plan dialogue
In this scene, one person shares a plan and the other person checks the meaning. Speaker A says «我明天可能不去。». Speaker B asks a checking question: «你的意思是你不想去吗?». Speaker A corrects the idea and gives a reason: «不是,我的意思是我有事。». Speaker B then shows understanding: «哦,我明白了。». Notice that B does not simply repeat A's words. B offers a possible meaning, and A confirms or corrects it. This is a common and useful pattern: ask, check, correct, understand.
How to practice both roles
Read the dialogue aloud twice. First, read Speaker A's lines while the recording or a partner reads Speaker B. Then swap roles: read Speaker B's lines while the other voice reads Speaker A. Keep the order the same: A speaks first, B replies, A answers, B responds. When you ask a checking question, make your voice rise slightly at the end. When you correct someone, keep your voice even and add your reason clearly. If you are practicing alone, play the recording and pause after each line so you can say your part.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Checking available voices…
你是什么意思?
What do you mean?
nǐ shì shénme yìsi?
你的意思是……吗?
Do you mean ...?
nǐ de yìsi shì ... ma?
我不太明白。
I don't quite understand.
wǒ bú tài míngbai.
你能再说一遍吗?
Can you say that again?
nǐ néng zài shuō yí biàn ma?
Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.
我明天可能不去。
I might not go tomorrow.你的意思是你不想去吗?
Do you mean you don't want to go?不是,我的意思是我有事。
No, I mean I have something to do.哦,我明白了。
Oh, I understand.Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided clarification exchange
You are talking with a classmate about tomorrow's plan. Your classmate speaks first. You will take the role of the listener who checks meaning.
Your task: Read the dialogue aloud with a partner or the recording. Your classmate says «我明天可能不去。». You reply with «你的意思是你不想去吗?». Your classmate answers with «不是,我的意思是我有事。». You finish with «哦,我明白了。». Then swap roles and read it again.
Choose the matching reply
You hear someone say a line about tomorrow. You need to choose the reply that matches the meaning, not just a random clarification phrase.
Your task: Listen to or read «我明天可能不去。». Which reply fits best: «你的意思是你不想去吗?» or «你能再说一遍吗?»? Say your choice aloud, then say the full reply line. After that, listen to «不是,我的意思是我有事。». Which response shows that you understood: «哦,我明白了。» or «你是什么意思?»? Say your choice and the full line.
Recall and role swap
Cover the lines. You will rebuild the short dialogue from memory, then swap roles and rebuild it again.
Your task: Without looking, say the four lines in order: the plan, the checking question, the correction, and the understanding response. Use the recording references to check yourself: «我明天可能不去。», «你的意思是你不想去吗?», «不是,我的意思是我有事。», «哦,我明白了。». Then swap roles with your partner and say the dialogue again from the other side.
Common questions
What should I say when I only understood part of a sentence?
Use a short clarification line instead of staying silent. «我不太明白。» tells the speaker you do not quite understand, and «你能再说一遍吗?» asks them to say it again. If you think you know the meaning but want to check, use «你的意思是……吗?». These lines keep the conversation moving without guessing.
How do I answer when someone checks my meaning?
Confirm or correct the idea, then add a short reason if you have one. In the recorded dialogue, Speaker A answers a checking question with «不是,我的意思是我有事。», which corrects the idea and gives a reason. After you answer, the other person can show understanding with «哦,我明白了。». Keep your answer short and clear.
