In this workshop you will practice a short, useful exchange in Chinese: asking for a recommendation, understanding a suggested place, and responding politely. You will hear the lines first, learn what each one means in English, and then take part in guided speaking tasks. The recordings give you the exact lines to use, so you can focus on speaking clearly and responding in the right order.

    Asking for a Recommendation

Start by listening to the question lines. «有什么推荐的?» means "What do you recommend?" and is a general way to ask for a suggestion. «有什么推荐看的地方吗?» means "Are there any places you recommend seeing?" and is more specific to sightseeing. «你可以推荐一下吗?» means "Could you recommend something?" and is another polite way to ask. Practice saying each line slowly, then at a natural speed. When you ask a real person, you can use any of these lines depending on how specific you want to be.

    Understanding the Reply

Now listen to a short exchange. «你好,有什么推荐看的地方吗?» means "Hello, are there any places you recommend seeing?" This is the opening question from one speaker. «你可以去老城区看看,那里很有名。» means "You can go take a look at the old town; it's very famous." This is the reply, suggesting a place. «好的,谢谢你的推荐。» means "Okay, thank you for your recommendation." This is a polite response after receiving a suggestion. «不客气,祝你玩得开心!» means "You're welcome, have a good time!" This is a friendly closing. The order is: question, suggestion, thanks, closing. When you practice, keep this order even if you switch roles with a partner.

    Roles and Order

In the recorded exchange, one person asks for a recommendation and the other person suggests a place. If you practice with a partner, you can swap roles: one time you ask and your partner replies, then your partner asks and you reply. The order of the conversation stays the same: first the question, then the suggestion, then the thanks, then the closing. Do not start with the closing or the thanks. If you are practicing alone, you can play both roles by reading each line in order. Listen to the recording again if you are unsure which line comes next.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    有什么推荐的?

    What do you recommend?

    Yǒu shénme tuījiàn de?

    有什么推荐看的地方吗?

Are there any places you recommend seeing?

Yǒu shénme tuījiàn kàn de dìfang ma?

    我想看有名的景点。

I want to see famous scenic spots.

Wǒ xiǎng kàn yǒumíng de jǐngdiǎn.

    你可以推荐一下吗?

    Could you recommend something?

    Nǐ kěyǐ tuījiàn yíxià ma?

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    你好,有什么推荐看的地方吗?

Hello, are there any places you recommend seeing?
    B

    你可以去老城区看看,那里很有名。

You can go take a look at the old town; it's very famous.
    A

    好的,谢谢你的推荐。

Okay, thank you for your recommendation.
    B

    不客气,祝你玩得开心!

You're welcome, have a good time!
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Ask and Reply

You will play both roles in a short exchange. First, read the question line. Then read the reply line. Then read the thanks line. Finally, read the closing line.

Your task: Read «你好,有什么推荐看的地方吗?» as the person asking. Then read «你可以去老城区看看,那里很有名。» as the person replying. Then read «好的,谢谢你的推荐。» as the person asking again. Then read «不客气,祝你玩得开心!» as the person replying again. Say each line out loud in this order.

    2

Reply Comprehension: Choose the Right Response

You will hear a question and then choose the best reply from two options. The question is «你好,有什么推荐看的地方吗?», which means "Hello, are there any places you recommend seeing?"

Your task: Which reply fits the question? Option A: «你可以去老城区看看,那里很有名。», which means "You can go take a look at the old town; it's very famous." Option B: «不客气,祝你玩得开心!», which means "You're welcome, have a good time!" Say your choice out loud, then say the full reply line.

    3

    Recall with Correct Roles

You will recall the exchange from memory. Imagine you are the person asking for a recommendation. Your partner is the person who replies.

Your task: Say the question line «你好,有什么推荐看的地方吗?» from memory. Then say the reply line «你可以去老城区看看,那里很有名。» as your partner. Then say the thanks line «好的,谢谢你的推荐。» as yourself. Then say the closing line «不客气,祝你玩得开心!» as your partner. If you forget a line, listen to the recording again and repeat.

    Common questions

Can I use these lines with anyone?

These lines are polite and general, so you can use them in many everyday situations when you want a suggestion. The reply line «你可以去老城区看看,那里很有名。» mentions a specific place, so if you are in a different situation, the other person may suggest something else. You can still use the same question and thanks lines.

What if I am practicing alone?

You can play both roles by reading each line in order. Listen to the recording, pause after each line, and repeat it. Then try to say the next line before you hear it. This helps you remember the order: question, suggestion, thanks, closing.
