In this workshop you will practice a short, useful exchange at a tourist information desk: asking whether a city map is available, saying which language you want, and asking how much it costs. You will hear the key lines, understand what each one means in English, and then speak them yourself in two roles. The recordings give you the exact lines to use, so you can focus on speaking clearly and responding at the right moment.
The Key Lines and What They Mean
Start by listening to the whole exchange so you know how the lines fit together. A visitor opens with a greeting and a question: «你好! The person at the desk answers and offers a choice: «有。 The visitor chooses and asks the price: «我要英文的。 The staff member replies that there is no charge and hands the map over: «免费。 . Notice the order: greeting and question first, then the reply, then the choice and price question, then the final answer. If you only need one line at a time, you can also practice the short questions on their own: «你有城市地图吗?», «我想要一张地图。»
Choosing a Language and Asking the Price
Two details make this exchange work. First, the visitor asks whether an English version is available: «有英文的吗?». This is useful when the first question about a city map has already been answered. Second, the visitor asks the cost: «多少钱?». In the full dialogue, the choice and the price question come together: «我要英文的。 The staff reply shows that the map costs nothing: «免费。 . When you practice, keep the same order. Ask about the map, wait for the reply, then say which language you want, and only then ask the price. This keeps the conversation natural and easy for the other person to follow.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Hello! Excuse me, do you have a city map?
Yes. Do you want the Chinese or English one?
I want the English one. How much is it?免费。给你。
It's free. Here you are.Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided Exchange at the Information Desk
You are a visitor at a tourist information desk. Your partner plays the staff member. Use the recorded lines in order and speak clearly.
Your task: Visitor: say the opening line «你好! Staff: reply with «有。 Visitor: choose the English map and ask the price with «我要英文的。 Staff: answer with «免费。 . Then swap roles and repeat the same order.
Listen and Choose the Right Reply
Your partner says one line from the dialogue. You choose the correct next line from the two options and say it aloud.
Your task: If your partner says «你好! . If your partner says «我要英文的。 . Say your chosen line, then check the answer key below.
Recall the Exchange with Correct Roles
Work with a partner. One person is the visitor and one is the staff member. Cover the lines and rebuild the conversation from memory.
Your task: Visitor begins with «你好! Staff answers with «有。 Staff finishes with «免费。 . Then swap roles and do it again without looking at the lines.
Common questions
Do I need to learn all the short questions separately?
No. The short questions «你有城市地图吗?», «我想要一张地图。», «有英文的吗?», and «多少钱?» are useful for extra practice, but the full exchange «你好! already contains the main lines you need. Practice the full exchange first, then use the short questions if you want to focus on one part.
What should I do if I forget my line during the role-play?
Look at only the line you need, say it aloud, then cover it again and continue from that point. Keep the same order: the visitor asks about the map, the staff member replies, the visitor chooses and asks the price, and the staff member gives the final answer.
