Practice asking whether a place or area is safe, understanding a cautious reply, and checking what a reply means.

In this workshop you will practice a short, practical exchange about neighborhood safety. You will learn how to ask whether a place or area is safe, how to understand a calm but careful answer, and how to check what that answer means. The recordings give you the exact lines to use, so you can practice both roles without inventing new phrases.

Asking Whether a Place or Area Is Safe

Start with a simple yes-or-no question. «这里安全吗?» means "Is this place safe?" and «这个地区安全吗?» means "Is this area safe?" Both are useful when you want a quick check about where you are. If you want to be polite before asking, use «请问,这个地区安全吗?», which means "Excuse me, is this area safe?" The short answers are «安全。», meaning "It's safe," and «不安全。», meaning "It's not safe." Practice saying the question with a rising, interested tone, then answer with a calm, level tone.

    Understanding a Careful Answer

A direct yes-or-no answer is not the only possible reply. In «白天很安全,晚上最好小心一点。», the speaker says "It's very safe during the day, but at night it's best to be a bit careful." This does not mean the area is dangerous; it means the situation changes by time. If you hear this, you can check your understanding with «晚上不安全吗?», which means "Is it not safe at night?" The reply «也不是不安全,就是人少,注意点就好。» means "It's not that it's unsafe, just that there are fewer people, so just be mindful." Together, these lines show how to ask, receive a cautious answer, and confirm what it means.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Safety Question Exchange

Imagine you have just arrived in a neighborhood and want to check whether the area is safe. You will read the visitor's part, and a partner or the recording will read the local person's part.

Your task: Read «请问,这个地区安全吗?» aloud as the visitor. Then listen to or read «白天很安全,晚上最好小心一点。» as the local person's reply. After that, read «晚上不安全吗?» to check what the reply means, and finish with «也不是不安全,就是人少,注意点就好。». If you are practicing alone, play the recording for the local person's lines and speak only the visitor's lines.

    2

    Choose the Matching Reply

Imagine a visitor asks whether the area is safe. You will hear or read a reply and choose the line that matches its meaning.

Your task: The visitor asks with «请问,这个地区安全吗?». Which reply fits a cautious answer about daytime and nighttime: «安全。» or «白天很安全,晚上最好小心一点。»? Then the visitor checks with «晚上不安全吗?». Which reply explains that it is not unsafe, just quieter: «不安全。» or «也不是不安全,就是人少,注意点就好。»?

    3

Recall the Exchange with Correct Roles

Imagine the same neighborhood safety conversation without looking at the lines. One person is the visitor and one person is the local person.

Your task: The visitor begins with a polite safety question. The local person gives a cautious answer about day and night. The visitor checks whether night is unsafe. The local person explains that it is not unsafe, just quieter. Use the recorded lines you practiced.

    Common questions

What should I say if I only want to ask whether a place is safe?

Use «这里安全吗?» for "Is this place safe?" or «这个地区安全吗?» for "Is this area safe?" If you want to be polite first, use «请问,这个地区安全吗?», which means "Excuse me, is this area safe?"

What does a cautious answer about day and night mean?

«白天很安全,晚上最好小心一点。» means "It's very safe during the day, but at night it's best to be a bit careful." It does not mean the area is unsafe. You can check with «晚上不安全吗?», and «也不是不安全,就是人少,注意点就好。» explains that it is not unsafe, just that there are fewer people, so be mindful.
