Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When you want to add a second point in Spanish, you cannot simply translate 'furthermore' word for word. Spanish uses a small set of addition connectors, and each one carries a different level of formality. The workhorse is además, which works in almost any context. Asimismo belongs to formal writing, while encima adds a tone of complaint. This lesson teaches you what each connector means, where it goes in the sentence, and which ones to avoid in casual conversation.

    By the end, you can…

    • add a second idea in Spanish using además, asimismo, and encima
    • choose the right addition connector for formal writing versus everyday speech
    • place addition connectors correctly at the start or in the middle of a Spanish sentence

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Además, el hotel incluye desayuno.

In addition, the hotel includes breakfast.

    ah-deh-MAHS, el oh-TEL een-KLOO-yeh deh-sah-YOO-noh

The most common addition connector. Works in speech and writing, at the start of a sentence or after the first idea.

El plan es caro; además, nadie lo apoya.

The plan is expensive; furthermore, nobody supports it.

    el plan es KAH-roh; ah-deh-MAHS, NAH-dee-eh loh ah-POH-yah

After a semicolon or period, además adds a second, often stronger point. Common in both spoken and written Spanish.

Asimismo, el informe señala tres riesgos.

Likewise, the report points out three risks.

    ah-see-MEE-smoh, el een-FOR-meh seh-NYAH-lah tres RRYES-gohs

Formal written Spanish: reports, essays, official documents. Rare in everyday conversation.

Es barato y, encima, está cerca.

It's cheap and, on top of that, it's close by.

    es bah-RAH-toh ee, en-SEE-mah, es-TAH SER-kah

Encima adds information with a complaining or surprised tone: 'and on top of that.' Not neutral like además.

Aparte de eso, necesitamos más tiempo.

Apart from that, we need more time.

    ah-PAR-teh deh EH-soh, neh-seh-see-TAH-mohs mahs TYEM-poh

Aparte de eso introduces an additional point after the main one. Common in conversation and semi-formal writing.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Addition connectors usually open a clause and are followed by a comma: 'Además, el precio subió.' You can also place además after the verb for emphasis: 'El precio subió, además.' Asimismo behaves like a formal adverb and typically starts the sentence: 'Asimismo, se recomienda revisar el contrato.' Encima often appears after 'y': 'Es tarde y, encima, llueve.' Notice that Spanish does not need a separate word for 'furthermore' versus 'in addition' in most cases; además covers both.

    When to use it

Use además in almost any situation: emails, class discussions, essays, and casual chats. Choose asimismo when you are writing a formal report, academic essay, or official letter, and avoid it in casual speech because it sounds stiff. Use encima only when the added information makes the situation worse or more surprising: 'Perdí el bus y, encima, empezó a llover.' For a neutral 'apart from that,' use aparte de eso. In Latin American Spanish, además and aparte de eso are the safest everyday choices.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    ¿Cómo estuvo la reunión?

    How was the meeting?KOH-moh es-TOO-voh lah reh-YOON-yohn
    B

Larga. Además, nadie trajo los datos.

    Long. In addition, nobody brought the data.LAR-gah. ah-deh-MAHS, NAH-dyeh TRAH-hoh lohs DAH-tohs
    A

Qué mal. ¿Y van a repetirla?

That's too bad. And are they going to repeat it?keh mahl. ee van ah reh-peh-TEER-lah
    B

Sí, y encima el jefe quiere que sea mañana.

Yes, and on top of that the boss wants it to be tomorrow.see, ee en-SEE-mah el HEH-feh KYEH-reh keh SEH-ah mah-NYAH-nah

A little context goes a long way

In Latin American Spanish, además is the neutral default and appears in every register. Asimismo is largely limited to formal written Spanish and can sound bookish in conversation. Encima carries an emotional charge, so use it only when the added fact worsens the situation. Regional variation is minor here, but in some countries aparte is more common than aparte de eso in casual speech.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'también' to mean 'furthermore' at the start of a sentence: 'También, el hotel es caro.'

Try this instead: También means 'also' and normally goes near the verb or after the subject, not at the start as a connector. Say 'El hotel también es caro' or, for a true addition connector, 'Además, el hotel es caro.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Choose the best connector for a formal report: 'The study is incomplete. ___, the sample is small.'

    Show a sample answer

    Asimismo, la muestra es pequeña.

Asimismo fits formal written Spanish. Además would also be correct and more neutral; asimismo simply sounds more formal.

2Add a complaining second point: 'Llegó tarde y ___ no se disculpó.'

    Show a sample answer

Llegó tarde y encima no se disculpó.

Encima adds information that makes the situation worse, matching the complaining tone. Además would be neutral and would not convey the same irritation.

3Rewrite with an addition connector: 'El plan es caro. Nadie lo apoya.'

    Show a sample answer

El plan es caro. Además, nadie lo apoya.

Además correctly links the two ideas as additions. 'Asimismo' is possible in formal writing, and 'Aparte de eso' also works in conversation.

    Take this with you

Use además as your default addition connector, save asimismo for formal writing, and reserve encima for added facts that make things worse.
