Understanding Persuasive Spanish in Commercials: Spot the Product and the Claim
Learn to identify the product and the persuasive claim in Latin American Spanish commercials using key words like oferta, gratis, and garantizado.

When you hear a Spanish commercial, you do not need to understand every word. You need two things: what is being sold and what the ad promises. This lesson teaches you to listen for the product name and the persuasive claim. You will learn common commercial words such as oferta, gratis, garantizado, and mejora tu vida. You will also learn how Spanish ads use commands and numbers to persuade. By the end, you can listen to a short ad and answer two questions: ¿Qué venden? and ¿Qué prometen?
By the end, you can…
- identify the product being sold in a short Spanish commercial.
- recognize common persuasive claims such as offers, guarantees, and free gifts.
- distinguish a product name from a claim in spoken Spanish.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Useful pattern
Spanish commercials often put the product name first, then a claim. Listen for the pattern: [Producto] + [claim]. For example: 'Jabón Limpio, ahora con más espuma.' The product is Jabón Limpio; the claim is 'con más espuma.' Another pattern is a command: 'Compra hoy y recibe un regalo gratis.' The verb compra (buy) tells you the action, and gratis tells you the benefit. Recognizing these two parts helps you separate what is sold from what is promised.
When to use it
Use this skill when you hear or watch any ad in Spanish. If you only catch the product, you can still answer ¿Qué venden? If you only catch the claim, you can answer ¿Qué prometen? For example, in 'Detergente Blanco, elimina las manchas difíciles,' the product is Detergente Blanco and the claim is 'elimina las manchas difíciles.' In 'Llama ahora y obtén dos por uno,' the claim is 'dos por uno.' This pattern works in radio, TV, and online ads across Latin America.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In Latin American Spanish, commercials often use usted or tú depending on the country and audience. For example, in Mexico and Colombia, usted is common in formal ads, while tú is common in youth-oriented ads. The word gratis is widely understood, but in some regions you may hear sin costo or de cortesía. Always listen for the product name first, as it is usually repeated.
One thing to watch for
Assuming that gratis means the whole product is free.
Try this instead: In most commercials, gratis refers to an extra item or a trial, not the main product. For example, 'Compra el teléfono y recibe un estuche gratis' means you buy the phone and get a free case, not a free phone. Listen for what exactly is gratis.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1In the sentence 'Café Aroma, ahora con más sabor,' what is the product?
Show a sample answer
Café Aroma
The product name comes first. 'Ahora con más sabor' is the claim, not the product. Other answers like 'más sabor' are the claim, not the product.
2What persuasive claim do you hear in 'Garantizado por un año'?
Show a sample answer
A guarantee for one year.
The word garantizado signals a promise about quality or duration. The specific claim is 'por un año.' You could also say 'it promises a one-year guarantee.'
3In 'Llama ya y obtén envío gratis,' what is free?
Show a sample answer
The shipping.
The phrase envío gratis means free shipping. The product itself is not free. A valid alternative answer is 'el envío' (the shipping).
Listen for two things in every Spanish commercial: the product name and the persuasive claim. Words like oferta, gratis, and garantizado help you spot the claim quickly.
