How to Say 'Why Don't We...?' in Spanish: Polite Suggestions with ¿Por qué no...?

Learn to make polite suggestions in Latin American Spanish with ¿Por qué no...? and compare them with more direct forms like Vamos a... or ¿Quieres...?

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

In Spanish, one of the easiest and most polite ways to suggest doing something together is the question ¿Por qué no...? — literally 'Why don't we...?' You simply add the verb in the present tense, and the suggestion sounds friendly rather than pushy. This lesson focuses only on this structure and on how it differs from more direct suggestions, so you can invite someone to do something without sounding demanding.

    By the end, you can…

    • form polite suggestions in Spanish using ¿Por qué no...? with a present-tense verb.
    • recognize when a more direct suggestion like Vamos a... or ¿Quieres...? is appropriate.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

¿Por qué no vamos al cine?

Why don't we go to the movies?

pohr keh noh BAH-mohs ahl SEE-neh

A friendly suggestion for something you can do together soon. Use vamos (we go) after ¿Por qué no...?

    ¿Por qué no comemos algo?

    Why don't we eat something?

    pohr keh noh koh-MEH-mohs AHL-goh

Common when you are already together and want to decide on a meal. Comemos is the present-tense 'we' form.

¿Por qué no tomamos un café?

Why don't we have a coffee?

pohr keh noh toh-MAH-mohs oon kah-FEH

In Latin America, tomar un café usually means to have a coffee, not necessarily to drink it quickly. Very common invitation. Note that the stress falls on the final syllable: kah-FEH.

    ¿Por qué no lo pensamos?

Why don't we think about it?

    pohr keh noh loh pen-SAH-mohs

Useful when you want to delay a decision politely. The pronoun lo refers to the idea or plan already mentioned.

¿Por qué no le preguntamos a Ana?

    Why don't we ask Ana?

    pohr keh noh leh preh-goon-TAH-mohs a AH-nah

Shows you can add an object after the verb. Le preguntamos means 'we ask her/him'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern is ¿Por qué no + present-tense 'we' verb + ...? The verb must match 'we' (nosotros/nosotras): vamos, comemos, tomamos, pensamos, preguntamos. Examples: ¿Por qué no vamos a la playa? (Why don't we go to the beach?), ¿Por qué no comemos aquí? (Why don't we eat here?). The question mark opens with ¿ and closes with ?, and the tone is soft because it is a question, not a command. Note that in Spanish, the pronoun nosotros is usually omitted because the verb ending already shows who is speaking.

    When to use it

Use ¿Por qué no...? when you want to sound considerate, especially with acquaintances, coworkers, or someone you have just met. It leaves the other person free to say no. Compare it with more direct suggestions: Vamos al cine (Let's go to the movies) is fine with friends but can sound pushy in formal situations; ¿Quieres ir al cine? (Do you want to go to the movies?) focuses on the other person's desire. ¿Por qué no...? includes both of you: ¿Por qué no vamos juntos? (Why don't we go together?). In Spain, the pronoun vosotros is used for informal plural 'you,' while Latin America generally uses ustedes.

A little context goes a long way

In many Latin American varieties, ¿Por qué no...? is a standard polite suggestion, but the response matters: a direct 'no' can feel abrupt, so speakers often soften it with 'Me gustaría, pero...' or 'Tal vez otro día.' In Spain, vale is common for 'okay,' while Latin America often uses bueno, está bien, or dale. Regional vocabulary also changes: cinema is el cine in most places, but you may hear la función in some areas for a showing. Keep in mind that these are tendencies, not strict rules, and usage varies by country and even by region within a country.

    One thing to watch for

Using ¿Por qué no...? with a tú form, as in ¿Por qué no vas al cine?

Try this instead: That means 'Why don't you go to the movies?' and suggests only the other person goes. For 'we,' use the nosotros form: ¿Por qué no vamos al cine? If you want to invite one person directly, use ¿Quieres ir al cine? instead. Remember that Spanish verb endings change with the subject, so the form of the verb tells you who is included.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Turn 'comer algo' into a polite suggestion with ¿Por qué no...?

    Show a sample answer

    ¿Por qué no comemos algo?

Comemos is the present-tense nosotros form of comer, so it matches the 'we' suggestion. ¿Por qué no comemos algo? is correct and natural. You could also say ¿Por qué no comemos algo juntos? to make the 'together' idea explicit.

2Which is more direct: ¿Por qué no tomamos un café? or Vamos a tomar un café?

    Show a sample answer

Vamos a tomar un café is more direct.

Vamos a... states a plan as a suggestion and can sound more forceful. ¿Por qué no...? is a question, so it sounds softer and leaves more room to decline. Both are correct, but the context and relationship matter.

3Make a polite suggestion to ask Ana, using preguntar.

    Show a sample answer

¿Por qué no le preguntamos a Ana?

The verb preguntamos is the nosotros form, and le refers to Ana as the indirect object. This works because the suggestion includes both speakers. You could also say ¿Por qué no preguntamos a Ana? in some regions, but le is common and clear. In Spanish, the indirect object pronoun le is used even when the name Ana is mentioned.

    Take this with you

To make a polite suggestion in Spanish, use ¿Por qué no + present-tense nosotros verb? — for example, ¿Por qué no vamos? It is softer than Vamos a... and more inclusive than ¿Quieres...?, so it works well in both casual and careful situations. Remember that the verb ending already indicates 'we,' so the pronoun nosotros is usually not needed.
