Spanish for Lost Items: Station vs. Onboard the Train
Learn to tell Spanish-speaking staff exactly where you lost something: in the station or on the train, with polite, reusable patterns.

When something goes missing during a train trip, the first question staff ask is where you think you lost it. Your answer changes who can help you: station staff handle the concourse, platforms and waiting areas, while onboard staff handle the cars. This lesson teaches you to say clearly whether an item was lost in the station or on the train, and to ask the right questions so you are directed to the correct office or crew member.
By the end, you can…
- say whether I lost an item in the station or onboard the train.
- describe the item and ask station staff where to report it.
- politely ask whether an item was found and where to check.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Where can I report it?
DOHN-deh PWEH-doh rreh-pohr-TAR-loh
A polite, general question for station staff. It does not assume any particular procedure.
¿Han encontrado algo así?

ahn ehn-kohn-TRAH-doh AHL-goh ah-SEE
Ask this at an information desk or lost-property office; it is neutral and polite.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The key contrast is location: en la estación means inside the station, while a bordo del tren means on the train itself. Use lo perdí when you are answering a direct question about an item already mentioned: Lo perdí en la estación. If you want to name the item in the same sentence, say Perdí mi mochila en la estación or Perdí mi mochila a bordo del tren. Notice that en la estación and a bordo del tren can follow the verb directly, so you can swap the location without changing anything else.
When to use it
Start with the location phrase because it tells staff who should help you. If you lost something in the station, say Lo perdí en la estación and then ask ¿Dónde puedo reportarlo? If you lost it after boarding, say Fue a bordo del tren and ask the crew directly: ¿Puedo reportarlo con usted? Use a bordo del tren for the train itself; use en la estación for platforms, corridors and waiting rooms. If you are unsure, say No estoy seguro, pero creo que fue a bordo del tren.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Buenos días. Perdí una mochila negra.
Good morning. I lost a black backpack.BWEH-nohs DEE-ahs pehr-DEE OO-nah moh-CHEE-lah NEH-grah¿Dónde la perdió, en la estación o a bordo del tren?

In many Latin American countries, the polite default is usted with staff you do not know, so ¿Dónde puedo reportarlo? and ¿Puede ayudarme? fit naturally. In Spain, usted is also correct in this situation, though younger staff may switch to tú. The term objetos perdidos is widely understood, but some places use oficina de equipajes or a specific counter name; ask staff which office handles it rather than assuming.
One thing to watch for
Using en el tren for an item lost inside the station, or en la estación for something left at your seat.
Try this instead: Match the phrase to the actual place. If the item was at your seat, say Fue a bordo del tren. If it was in the waiting area, say Lo perdí en la estación. Staff use this distinction to send you to the right place.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1You left your jacket on the seat after boarding. How do you say where it was lost?
Show a sample answer
Fue a bordo del tren.
This states the item was onboard the train. You could also say Lo perdí a bordo del tren; both are correct and clear.
2You realize your wallet is missing while standing on the platform before boarding. What do you say?
Show a sample answer
Lo perdí en la estación.
The platform is part of the station area, so en la estación is the right location. If you are unsure, add Creo que lo perdí en la estación.
3You want to ask a staff member where to report a lost phone. What polite question works?
Show a sample answer
¿Dónde puedo reportar mi teléfono perdido?
This asks for the reporting location without assuming a procedure. ¿Dónde puedo reportarlo? is also fine once the item is already clear from context.
Lead with the location: en la estación for the station, a bordo del tren for the train. Then name the item and ask politely where to report it.
