Spanish for Nutrition: Saying 'This Is High in Protein' and Discussing Health Benefits

Learn to describe foods as high or low in nutrients and explain their health benefits in Latin American Spanish, with a focus on protein.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

In this lesson, you'll learn how to talk about nutrition in Spanish, specifically how to say that a food is high in protein and discuss its health benefits. Unlike talking about dietary needs (what you should eat), this lesson focuses on describing the nutritional content of foods and why they are good for you. You'll learn key phrases like 'Es alto en proteína' and 'Tiene mucha proteína', and how to use them in conversations about healthy eating. We'll use broadly useful Latin American Spanish, noting regional variations where relevant.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a food as high or low in a specific nutrient using 'alto en' and 'bajo en'.
    • explain the health benefits of a food using phrases like 'es bueno para' and 'ayuda a'.
    • ask and answer questions about the nutritional content of foods in a conversation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Es alto en proteína.

    It is high in protein.

    es AL-to en pro-te-EE-na

Use 'alto en' to describe a food's high content of a nutrient. 'Proteína' is feminine, so with feminine foods you'll see 'alta en proteína' (e.g., 'La quinoa es alta en proteína').

    Tiene mucha proteína.

It has a lot of protein.

    TYE-ne MOO-cha pro-te-EE-na

A more colloquial way to say something is high in protein. 'Mucha' agrees with feminine 'proteína'.

    Es bueno para los músculos.

    It is good for muscles.

    es BWE-no PA-ra los MOOS-ku-los

Use 'bueno para' to state a health benefit. 'Bueno' agrees with the food being described: 'El pescado es bueno para el corazón', but 'La avena es buena para el corazón'.

    Ayuda a mantenerte lleno.

    It helps keep you full.

    a-YOO-da a man-te-NER-te YE-no

Use 'ayuda a' + infinitive to explain a benefit. 'Mantenerte' is a reflexive infinitive meaning 'to keep yourself'.

    ¿Qué beneficios tiene?

    What benefits does it have?

    ke be-ne-FEE-syos TYE-ne

A useful question to ask about a food's health benefits. 'Beneficios' is a common term for health benefits.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To say a food is high in a nutrient, use 'ser' + 'alto/alta en' + nutrient: 'La quinoa es alta en proteína.' Note that 'alto' agrees in gender and number with the food: 'alta' for feminine foods like 'quinoa', 'altos' for plural masculine foods. Alternatively, use 'tener' + 'mucha/mucho' + nutrient: 'El pollo tiene mucha proteína.' Here, 'mucha' agrees with the nutrient's gender: 'mucha proteína' (feminine), 'mucho hierro' (masculine). Both patterns are common, but 'alto en' is more formal and often used in nutritional information, while 'tiene mucha' is more conversational.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when discussing the nutritional profile of foods, such as in a conversation about diet, cooking, or health. For example, if someone asks '¿Qué comes para la proteína?', you can answer 'Como huevos, que son altos en proteína.' When talking about benefits, use 'es bueno para' + noun or 'ayuda a' + infinitive: 'El pescado es bueno para el corazón' or 'La avena ayuda a reducir el colesterol.' These structures allow you to explain why a food is healthy. Avoid using 'alto en' with people; it's for foods.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Latin America, conversations about nutrition often include traditional foods like beans, quinoa, and avocado. While 'alto en proteína' is widely understood, in casual settings people might say 'tiene bastante proteína' or 'es pura proteína' for emphasis. In Spain, 'proteína' is also used, but the phrase 'es rico en proteínas' (rich in proteins) is more common in formal contexts. In Latin America, 'rico en' is also used but less frequently in everyday speech.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'alto en proteínas' with a plural 'proteínas' when describing a single food, e.g., 'El huevo es alto en proteínas.'

Try this instead: In Latin American Spanish, when referring to the nutrient content in general, 'proteína' is often used in singular: 'El huevo es alto en proteína.' However, 'proteínas' is also acceptable in some regions. To be safe, use singular: 'Es alto en proteína.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'Chicken is high in protein' using the 'alto en' pattern?

    Show a sample answer

El pollo es alto en proteína.

'Pollo' is masculine singular, so 'alto' is masculine singular. 'Proteína' is feminine singular, but 'alto en' does not change for the nutrient's gender. Alternative: 'El pollo tiene mucha proteína.'

2Translate: 'Avocado is good for the heart and helps keep you full.'

    Show a sample answer

El aguacate es bueno para el corazón y ayuda a mantenerte lleno.

'Aguacate' is masculine, so 'bueno' is masculine. 'Ayuda a' is followed by the infinitive 'mantenerte'. You could also say 'ayuda a que te mantengas lleno', but the infinitive is more common.

3What question would you ask to find out the health benefits of a food?

    Show a sample answer

    ¿Qué beneficios tiene?

This is a direct way to ask about benefits. You could also ask '¿Para qué es bueno?' (What is it good for?). Both are correct.

    Take this with you

Use 'es alto en' or 'tiene mucha' to say a food is high in a nutrient, and 'es bueno para' or 'ayuda a' to explain its health benefits. Remember to match gender and number where needed.
