Spanish for Explaining Food Choices: "Elijo comer... porque..."

Learn to explain why you eat a certain way in Spanish using elijo comer... porque..., with reasons, contrast and polite conversation practice.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

In this lesson you will learn to explain a personal food choice in Spanish by giving a reason, not just stating a need. The key pattern is "Elijo comer ___ porque ___", which means "I choose to eat ___ because ___". This is different from saying "Necesito comer ___" (I need to eat ___) or "Quiero comer ___" (I want to eat ___). Those express a need or a wish. "Elijo" expresses a decision and invites a reason. You will practice the verb "elegir" (to choose), common foods, and connectors like "porque" (because), "para" (in order to) and "por" (because of). The examples use broadly useful Latin American Spanish; regional notes appear where usage changes.

    By the end, you can…

    • say what I choose to eat and give a reason using "Elijo comer... porque..."
    • ask another person why they eat a certain way and understand their answer
    • contrast a choice with a need using "elijo" and "necesito"

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Elijo comer verduras porque me siento mejor.

I choose to eat vegetables because I feel better.

    eh-LEE-hoh koh-MEHR behr-DOO-rahs POHR-kay meh SYEHN-toh meh-HOHR

Use this to state a personal choice and a health reason. "Verduras" is a general word for vegetables in Latin America.

Elijo comer pollo porque tiene mucha proteína.

I choose to eat chicken because it has a lot of protein.

    eh-LEE-hoh koh-MEHR POH-yoh POHR-kay TYEH-neh MOO-chah proh-teh-EE-nah

Useful when talking about nutrition. In some regions "pollo" is the everyday word for chicken meat.

No como carne porque soy vegetariano.

    I don't eat meat because I'm vegetarian.

    noh KOH-moh KAR-neh POHR-kay soy beh-heh-tah-RYAH-noh

A direct way to explain a restriction. A woman says "vegetariana". In Spanish, adjectives of nationality and personal description often change with gender.

    ¿Por qué eliges comer así?

Why do you choose to eat that way?

    pohr KAY eh-LEE-hehs koh-MEHR ah-SEE

A natural question to ask someone about their eating choices. "Así" means "like that" or "this way".

Elijo comer en casa porque es más económico.

I choose to eat at home because it's cheaper.

    eh-LEE-hoh koh-MEHR ehn KAH-sah POHR-kay ehs mahs eh-koh-NOH-mee-koh

Use "económico" for affordable or economical. In casual speech, some speakers say "barato" (cheap), but "económico" sounds more neutral.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is: Elijo + comer + food + porque + reason. Examples: "Elijo comer fruta porque es dulce y saludable." (I choose to eat fruit because it is sweet and healthy.) "Elijo comer arroz porque me da energía." (I choose to eat rice because it gives me energy.) You can also use "elijo" with other verbs: "Elijo cocinar en casa porque ahorro dinero." (I choose to cook at home because I save money.) The verb "elegir" changes: yo elijo, tú eliges, él/ella elige. The reason after "porque" can be a full clause with a conjugated verb, as in "porque me siento mejor". You can also use "para" to express purpose: "Elijo comer ensalada para cuidarme." (I choose to eat salad to take care of myself.)

    When to use it

Use "Elijo comer... porque..." when you want to present your eating style as a decision with reasons, not as a simple need. Compare: "Necesito comer" (I need to eat) focuses on necessity; "Quiero comer" (I want to eat) focuses on desire; "Elijo comer" focuses on choice and invites explanation. This is useful in conversations about diet, health, budget or ethics. For example, if a friend asks "¿Por qué no comes carne?", you can answer "Elijo no comer carne porque prefiero una dieta vegetariana." In more formal situations, you can say "Opto por comer..." (I opt to eat...), but "elijo" is clear and common in everyday Latin American Spanish.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

Yo elijo comer pollo porque tiene proteína. ¿Y tú?

    I choose to eat chicken because it has protein. And you?yoh eh-LEE-hoh koh-MEHR POH-yoh POHR-kay TYEH-neh proh-teh-EE-nah ee too
    B

Yo elijo comer arroz y frijoles porque es económico y rico.

    I choose to eat rice and beans because it's affordable and tasty.yoh eh-LEE-hoh koh-MEHR ah-RROHS ee free-HOH-lehs POHR-kay ehs eh-koh-NOH-mee-koh ee REE-koh

A little context goes a long way

In many Latin American countries, "frijoles" is common for beans, while "porotos" is used in parts of Chile and Argentina, and "habichuelas" in the Caribbean. "Rico" for tasty is very common in casual Latin American Spanish, but in some contexts it can mean "rich" in money. When talking about diet, avoid saying "dieta" if you mean a permanent way of eating; many speakers understand "dieta" as a weight-loss plan. Say "forma de comer" or "alimentación" for a general eating style.

    One thing to watch for

Saying "Elijo comer verduras porque me siento mejor" as "Elijo comer verduras por me siento mejor."

Try this instead: Use "porque" before a clause with a verb: "Elijo comer verduras porque me siento mejor." Use "por" before a noun or infinitive: "Elijo comer verduras por salud." (I choose to eat vegetables for health.) Do not use "por" to mean "because" before a conjugated verb.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say "I choose to eat fish because it is healthy" in Spanish?

    Show a sample answer

Elijo comer pescado porque es saludable.

This uses "elijo + comer + food + porque + reason". "Pescado" is the common word for fish as food. You could also say "Elijo comer pescado porque es sano", which is also correct.

2What is the difference between "Necesito comer" and "Elijo comer"?

    Show a sample answer

"Necesito comer" means "I need to eat" and expresses necessity. "Elijo comer" means "I choose to eat" and expresses a decision with a reason.

The lesson focuses on choices and reasons. "Necesito" is about need, while "elijo" invites an explanation with "porque". Both are valid in different situations.

3Complete the sentence: "Elijo comer en casa ___ es más económico."

    Show a sample answer

    porque

"Porque" introduces the reason before a conjugated verb: "es más económico". "Por" would not fit here because it is followed by a clause with a verb. "Para" would express purpose, not a reason.

    Take this with you

Use "Elijo comer ___ porque ___" to explain your food choices with reasons, and remember that "porque" introduces a clause, while "por" goes before a noun or infinitive.
