Splitting Tasks in Spanish: "Yo investigo, tú escribes"

Learn to divide work in Spanish with the pattern yo + verb, tú + verb, and agree on who does what for a shared project.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

When you work on a project with someone, you often need to divide the tasks: one person researches, another writes, one buys materials, another organizes. In Spanish, a simple and very useful pattern for this is yo + verb, tú + verb. For example, Yo investigo, tú escribes means "I'll do the research, you write." This lesson teaches you to propose a division of labor, accept or adjust it, and confirm who is responsible for what. You will use the present tense, which can also express a near-future plan in this context.

    By the end, you can…

    • propose a division of tasks using yo + verb, tú + verb.
    • accept or adjust a proposal and confirm who does what.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Yo investigo, tú escribes.

I'll do the research, you write.

    YOH ee-vehs-TEE-goh, too ehs-KREE-behs

Use this to propose a simple two-person division of labor. The present tense here refers to an immediate plan.

Yo busco la información y tú haces el resumen.

I'll look for the information and you do the summary.

    YOH BOOS-koh lah een-fohr-mah-SYOHN ee too AH-sehs ehl reh-SOO-mehn

A longer version with y (and). Useful when tasks are more specific.

¿Te parece si yo preparo la presentación?

How about if I prepare the presentation?

    teh pah-REH-seh see YOH preh-PAH-roh lah preh-sehn-tah-SYOHN

Te parece si... is a polite way to suggest a plan and check agreement.

    Me parece bien.

That works for me. / Sounds good to me.

    meh pah-REH-seh BYEHN

A common, neutral way to accept a proposal.

Mejor yo escribo y tú revisas.

Better if I write and you review.

    meh-HOHR YOH ehs-KREE-boh ee too reh-VEE-sahs

Use mejor to propose a different division without sounding harsh.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern yo + present-tense verb, tú + present-tense verb assigns tasks. Examples: Yo investigo, tú escribes. Yo llamo al cliente, tú preparas los documentos. You can also use y: Yo cocino y tú lavas los platos. The verb forms are regular present tense: investigar → investigo, escribir → escribes, preparar → preparo, revisar → revisas.

    When to use it

Use this pattern when you are organizing a shared task and want to be clear about responsibilities. It works in study projects, work, or planning an event. For a polite proposal, add ¿Te parece si...? For example: ¿Te parece si yo busco los datos y tú haces las gráficas? If you want to change the plan, say Mejor yo... y tú... This keeps the tone cooperative.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Para el proyecto, yo investigo y tú escribes. ¿Te parece?

For the project, I'll do the research and you write. Does that work for you?PAH-rah ehl proh-YEHK-toh, YOH ee-vehs-TEE-goh ee too ehs-KREE-behs. teh pah-REH-seh

That works for me, but better if I look for the information and you do the summary.meh pah-REH-seh BYEHN, PEH-roh meh-HOHR YOH BOOS-koh lah een-fohr-mah-SYOHN ee too AH-sehs ehl reh-SOO-mehn

De acuerdo. Entonces yo hago el resumen y tú revisas todo.

Agreed. Then I'll do the summary and you review everything.deh ah-KWEHR-doh. ehn-TOHN-sehs YOH AH-goh ehl reh-SOO-mehn ee too reh-VEE-sahs TOH-doh
    B

Perfecto. Yo reviso y te aviso cuando termine.

    Perfect. I'll review and let you know when I finish.pehr-FEHK-toh. YOH reh-VEE-soh ee teh ah-VEE-soh KWAHN-doh tehr-MEE-neh

A little context goes a long way

In many Latin American contexts, this direct division of tasks is normal among classmates and colleagues, but with someone older or in a formal workplace, soften it with ¿Te parece si...? or ¿Le parece si...? (usted). In some regions, people may prefer to discuss the plan before assigning tasks, so a brief ¿Cómo lo hacemos? can be a friendly opener.

    One thing to watch for

Using tú escribes to mean "you write" in a formal situation with a boss or stranger.

Try this instead: Use usted when you need formal address: Usted escribe el informe. For example, ¿Le parece si yo investigo y usted escribe el informe? Tú is for friends, peers, and people you know well.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say "I'll prepare the presentation and you review it" using the pattern?

    Show a sample answer

Yo preparo la presentación y tú la revisas.

This uses yo + present tense and tú + present tense. The pronoun la replaces la presentación. You could also say Yo preparo la presentación y tú revisas la presentación, which is also correct.

2Someone proposes: Yo investigo, tú escribes. You want to change it politely. What can you say?

    Show a sample answer

Mejor yo escribo y tú investigas.

Mejor introduces a different division without sounding rude. Other valid options include ¿Te parece si yo escribo y tú investigas?

3How do you accept a proposal in a neutral way?

    Show a sample answer

    Me parece bien.

Me parece bien is a common, neutral acceptance. De acuerdo or Perfecto also work depending on tone and region.

    Take this with you

Use yo + verb, tú + verb to divide tasks clearly, and soften or adjust with ¿Te parece si...? or Mejor... to keep the collaboration friendly.
