Changing the Subject Politely in Latin American Spanish: Transition Phrases for Conversation
Learn to shift topics smoothly in Spanish with phrases like 'hablando de eso' and 'por cierto', plus when each transition fits politely.

Sometimes a conversation drifts somewhere you would rather leave, or you simply want to move to a new topic without sounding abrupt. Spanish has a rich set of transition phrases that let you change direction politely. In this lesson you will learn five broadly useful Latin American Spanish expressions, how they differ in formality, and how to combine them with a short reaction so the shift feels natural rather than rude.
By the end, you can…
- use five common Spanish phrases to change the subject politely in a conversation.
- choose a transition phrase that matches the formality of the situation.
- connect a brief reaction to the previous topic with a new topic smoothly.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Useful pattern
Most polite topic changes follow a two-part pattern: a short acknowledgment of the current topic, then the transition phrase, then the new topic. For example: 'Sí, entiendo. Cambiando de tema, ¿ya viste el correo?' The acknowledgment ('Sí, entiendo') shows you were listening; 'Cambiando de tema' announces the shift; the question introduces the new subject. You can also reverse the order: 'Hablando de eso, justo quería preguntarte...' Here the transition connects the old topic to the new one, which sounds smoother than an abrupt question.
When to use it
Choose your phrase based on how related the topics are and how formal the setting is. If the new topic grows out of the old one, 'Hablando de eso' or 'Por cierto' fit naturally: 'Por cierto, ¿cómo le fue a tu hermana en el examen?' If the topics are unrelated, 'Cambiando de tema' is clearer and more polite. In casual chats with friends, 'Oye, una cosa' works well, but in a work meeting or with an older person, prefer 'Perdón, pero quería preguntarte algo' or 'Cambiando un poco de tema'. Notice that 'por cierto' is common across Latin America; in some regions you may also hear 'a propósito' with a similar function.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
¿Y cómo te fue con la mudanza el fin de semana?
And how did the move go this weekend?ee KOH-moh teh FWEH kohn lah moo-DAHN-sah ehl feen deh seh-MAH-nahBien, gracias. Todavía tengo cajas, pero ya estamos instalados. Hablando de eso, ¿tú sabes de algún buen electricista?
Good, thanks. I still have boxes, but we're settled in. Speaking of that, do you know a good electrician?byehn, GRAH-syahs. toh-dah-VEE-ah TEHN-goh KAH-hahs, PEH-roh yah ehs-TAH-mohs eens-tah-LAH-dohs. ah-BLAHN-doh deh EH-soh, too SAH-behs deh ahl-GOON bwehn eh-lehk-tree-SEES-tahSí, conozco uno muy bueno. Por cierto, ¿ya tienes internet en la casa nueva?
Yes, I know a very good one. By the way, do you already have internet in the new house?see, koh-NOHS-koh OO-noh mwee BWEH-noh. pohr SYEHR-toh, yah TYEH-nehs een-tehr-NEHT ehn lah KAH-sah NWEH-vahTodavía no. Cambiando de tema, ¿viste que van a abrir un mercado cerca?
Not yet. Changing the subject, did you see they're going to open a market nearby?toh-dah-VEE-ah noh. kahm-BYAHN-doh deh TEH-mah, BEES-teh keh bahn ah ah-BREER oon mehr-KAH-doh SEHR-kahA little context goes a long way
Politeness in Spanish conversation often comes from tone and a brief acknowledgment before the shift, not just the phrase itself. In many Latin American contexts, abruptly asking a new question can feel brusque, so a short 'Sí, entiendo' or 'Claro' before 'cambiando de tema' softens the move. Formality also varies by country and setting; 'oye' is friendly among peers but can sound too casual with strangers or in formal workplaces.
One thing to watch for
Using 'Por cierto' to introduce a completely unrelated topic in a formal meeting, as if it were a universal polite transition.
Try this instead: 'Por cierto' works best for a related or light addition. For a clearly new topic, use 'Cambiando de tema' or 'Perdón, pero quería preguntarte algo'. Example: 'Cambiando de tema, ¿podemos revisar el presupuesto?'
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1You are chatting with a friend and want to move from talking about a movie to asking about their vacation. Which phrase fits best?
Show a sample answer
Por cierto, ¿cómo te fue en las vacaciones?
'Por cierto' is a light, common transition for a friendly, semi-related shift. 'Cambiando de tema' would also work if the topics feel unrelated, so both can be valid depending on how you frame the link.
2In a work meeting, you need to introduce a new agenda item politely. Which phrase is most appropriate?
Show a sample answer
Cambiando de tema, me gustaría revisar el presupuesto.
'Cambiando de tema' clearly signals a new subject and stays polite in neutral or formal settings. 'Perdón, pero quería preguntarte algo' could also work if you are asking a person directly.
3What does 'Hablando de eso' signal, and when should you use it?
Show a sample answer
It means 'Speaking of that' and works when the new topic connects directly to what was just said.
It links the old and new topics, making the transition smooth. If there is no real connection, 'Cambiando de tema' is clearer and more honest.
Change topics politely by acknowledging what was said, then using a transition phrase that matches the link and formality: 'Hablando de eso' for related points, 'Por cierto' for light additions, and 'Cambiando de tema' for a clear new direction.
