Spanish for Asking If a Specific Dish Is Vegetarian or Gluten-Free
Learn to ask whether one particular dish is vegetarian or gluten-free in Latin American Spanish, and understand the server's yes, no, and caution answers.

When you have a dietary restriction, the key question is not 'What is your diet?' but 'Is this dish vegetarian?' or 'Is this dish gluten-free?' In Spanish, you ask about a specific plate using the pattern ¿Este plato es...? or ¿Este plato lleva...? This lesson gives you the exact questions, the words for vegetarian and gluten-free, and the short answers you will hear in a restaurant. You will also learn how to ask a follow-up when the answer is not clear.
By the end, you can…
- ask whether a specific dish is vegetarian or gluten-free.
- understand short yes, no, and warning answers about a dish.
- ask a simple follow-up about ingredients when the answer is unclear.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

¿Este plato es vegetariano?
Is this dish vegetarian?
es-teh PLAH-toh es veh-heh-tah-RYAH-noh
Use for a dish you are pointing to or have already ordered. Vegetariano is the standard word throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
¿Este plato es sin gluten?
Is this dish gluten-free?
es-teh PLAH-toh es seen GLOO-ten
Sin gluten is widely understood in Latin America and is also standard in Spain.
¿Este plato lleva carne?
Does this dish contain meat?
es-teh PLAH-toh YEH-vah KAR-neh
Llevar is very useful for asking what a dish contains. Here it means 'to have' or 'to include', not 'to carry'.
¿Lleva harina o pan?
Does it contain flour or bread?
YEH-vah ah-REE-nah oh pan
Use this follow-up for gluten. Harina is flour; pan is bread. Both commonly contain gluten.
¿Me puede confirmar?
Can you confirm that for me?
meh PWEH-deh kon-feer-MAR
Polite and useful when the server seems unsure. It asks them to check with the kitchen.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core pattern is ¿Este plato es...? plus an adjective, or ¿Este plato lleva...? plus a noun. Use es with vegetarian, gluten-free, spicy, or salty: ¿Este plato es picante? Use lleva with ingredients: ¿Este plato lleva queso? Lleva is common throughout Latin America and Spain for asking what a dish contains. If you are asking about a dish that is not in front of you, you can say ¿Ese plato es vegetariano? for 'Is that dish vegetarian?' Este means 'this' and ese means 'that.'
When to use it
Use these questions before you order, or when the plate arrives and you need to check. If the server answers sí, you can confirm with Gracias, entonces lo pido. If the answer is no, ask ¿Qué me recomienda? for 'What do you recommend?' If the server says no estoy seguro or no sé, use ¿Me puede confirmar? and wait for them to check. In busy restaurants, it is normal to ask politely and then repeat the key word: sin gluten, por favor.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Buenas tardes. ¿Este plato es vegetariano?

In many restaurants across Latin America and Spain, the server may not know every ingredient, especially for sauces and broths. Asking ¿Me puede confirmar? is polite and normal. In Spain, you will often hear sin gluten and apto para celíacos; in Latin America, sin gluten is the most broadly useful phrase. Vegetariano is widely understood, but some places may still use chicken broth or lard, so asking about specific ingredients is safer than relying on the label alone.
One thing to watch for
Using ¿Es usted vegetariano? to ask about a dish.
Try this instead: That asks whether a person is vegetarian. For a dish, say ¿Este plato es vegetariano? Use este plato or ese plato, not usted.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

Show a sample answer
¿Este plato es sin gluten?
Este plato points to the specific dish, and sin gluten means gluten-free. You may also hear ¿Este plato es libre de gluten? in some regions.
2The server says 'No lleva carne.' What does that mean for a vegetarian?
Show a sample answer
It means the dish does not contain meat.
