If you are traveling or living in a Spanish-speaking area, finding a supermarket is one of the first practical skills you need. In this lesson you will learn a polite, widely useful question: ¿Hay un supermercado cerca de aquí? You will also learn how to understand simple directions and ask follow-up questions about distance and location. The focus is on grocery shopping, so you will practice words for supermarket, store, and nearby places. All examples use broadly useful Latin American Spanish, with regional notes where usage changes.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask if there is a supermarket near here in Spanish.
    • understand and give simple location words like cerca, lejos, and a la derecha.
    • ask a follow-up question about distance or direction to a grocery store.

The most useful general question. Use it anywhere you need to find a grocery store.

A natural follow-up after someone tells you where the store is.

    PWEH-doh eer kah-mee-NAHN-doh

Useful when you want to know if the supermarket is within walking distance.

Busco un supermercado para comprar comida.

I'm looking for a supermarket to buy food.

    BOOS-koh oon soo-per-mer-KAH-doh PAH-rah kohm-PRAHR koh-MEE-dah

Use this if you want to explain why you are asking, especially with a shopkeeper or receptionist.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is ¿Hay + un/una + noun + cerca de aquí? ¿Hay means 'Is there?' or 'Are there?' and does not change for singular or plural: ¿Hay un banco? (Is there a bank?), ¿Hay tiendas? (Are there stores?). For a supermarket, use un supermercado. In some regions you will also hear la tienda for a small grocery store, but supermercado is clear everywhere. To ask about distance, add ¿Está lejos? or ¿Está cerca? after the person answers.

    When to use it

Use ¿Hay un supermercado cerca de aquí? with strangers, hotel staff, or shopkeepers. It is polite and neutral. If you are already talking to someone and want a shorter version, you can say ¿Hay un supermercado cerca? The word aquí means 'here.' In some regions, acá is common in everyday speech: ¿Hay un supermercado cerca de acá? Both are understood, but aquí is a safe choice for learners.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Latin America, a supermercado is usually a full grocery store, while a mercado is often an open-air or traditional market. If you ask for un supermercado, you will be directed to a modern grocery store. In some countries, people say el súper informally. Politeness matters: start with Disculpe or Perdón before asking a stranger. In smaller towns, the nearest place to buy food may be una tienda or una pulpería, not a large supermarket.

    One thing to watch for

Saying ¿Hay un supermercado cerca de mí? to mean 'near here.'

Try this instead: Use cerca de aquí or cerca de acá. De mí means 'near me' as a person, which sounds odd when asking a stranger for a location. Correct: ¿Hay un supermercado cerca de aquí?

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

    Show a sample answer

¿Hay un supermercado cerca de aquí?

    It's on the right.

    ¿Está lejos?

¿Está lejos? means 'Is it far?' You can also ask ¿Está lejos de aquí? for 'Is it far from here?' Both are correct and natural.

    Take this with you

Start with Disculpe, then ask ¿Hay un supermercado cerca de aquí? Listen for cerca, lejos, a la derecha, and a la izquierda to understand the answer.
