When you rent a home in a Spanish-speaking country, the monthly rent may or may not cover water, electricity, gas, and internet. Asking this clearly before you sign anything can save you money and confusion. In this lesson you will learn the key question, ¿Están incluidos los servicios?, plus related phrases for deposits, extra charges, and monthly bills. The Spanish here is broadly useful in Latin America, with notes on regional differences.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether utilities are included in the rent.
    • name common utilities and extra costs in Spanish.
    • understand and respond to a landlord's answer about what the rent covers.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask if something is included, use '¿Está incluido...?' for one item or '¿Están incluidos...?' for plural items. Examples: ¿Está incluido el internet? (Is internet included?), ¿Están incluidos los servicios? (Are utilities included?). The verb 'incluir' changes to 'incluido' or 'incluidos' to match the noun. You can also use the verb 'incluir' directly: ¿La renta incluye el agua? (Does the rent include water?).

    When to use it

Use these questions before signing a lease or paying a deposit. Start general with ¿Están incluidos los servicios?, then ask about specific bills: ¿La renta incluye la luz? If the answer is no, ask ¿Cuánto se paga de luz al mes? (How much is electricity per month?). In some countries, 'servicios' may refer mainly to water and trash, while electricity and gas are separate, so always confirm each one.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In many Latin American countries, 'servicios' often means water, trash collection, and sometimes gas, while electricity ('luz') and internet are commonly billed separately. The word 'renta' is common in Mexico and some other countries, but you may also hear 'alquiler' in parts of South America. When in doubt, ask about each utility by name rather than relying on one word.

    One thing to watch for

Using '¿Están incluido los servicios?' with a singular verb form.

Try this instead: Use the plural form 'incluidos' with plural nouns: ¿Están incluidos los servicios? For one item, use the singular: ¿Está incluido el internet? The verb must agree with the noun it describes.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Are utilities included?' in Spanish?

    Show a sample answer

    ¿Están incluidos los servicios?

This is the standard plural question. You may also hear ¿Los servicios están incluidos?, which is equally correct.

2You want to ask specifically if water is included. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    ¿Está incluida el agua?

'Agua' is feminine, so the adjective is 'incluida'. It takes the article 'el' because it begins with a stressed 'a', but it remains feminine: ¿Está incluida el agua? You could also ask ¿La renta incluye el agua?

3The landlord says electricity is not included. How do you ask how much it costs per month?

    Show a sample answer

¿Cuánto se paga de luz al mes?

This asks the monthly cost. You could also say ¿Cuánto cuesta la luz al mes? Both are natural and correct.

    Take this with you

Always ask ¿Están incluidos los servicios? before renting, then confirm each utility by name so you know exactly what your monthly costs will be.
