Korean for Beginners: Spot the Product and Claims in Commercials

Learn to understand Korean TV and online commercials by identifying the product and the main persuasive claims using elementary phrases and patterns.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

When you watch a Korean commercial, you don't need to understand every word to get the message. This lesson teaches you to find two key pieces of information: what product is being advertised and what claim the ad makes about it. You will learn common Korean phrases that introduce a product, state a benefit, and create urgency. All examples use Hangul and Revised Romanization. By the end, you can listen to a short ad and answer: what is it, and why should you buy it?

    By the end, you can…

    • identify the product name in a Korean commercial.
    • recognize simple persuasive claims like 'good for your skin' or 'number one in sales'.
    • distinguish between a product mention and a benefit claim.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    이 제품은

    this product (topic)

    i je-pum-eun

Introduces the product as the topic of the sentence. Often followed by a description or claim.

    새로 나왔어요

it just came out / it's new

    sae-ro na-wa-sseo-yo

A common claim that the product is new or newly released. Polite informal style used in ads.

    피부에 좋아요

    it's good for your skin

    pi-bu-e jo-a-yo

A typical benefit claim for cosmetics or skincare products. '에' marks the area of benefit.

    1위 제품

    number one product

    il-wi je-pum

A persuasive claim of being ranked first. Often appears in small print or spoken quickly.

    지금 구매하세요

    buy now

    ji-geum gu-mae-ha-se-yo

A call to action. '지금' means now, '구매하세요' is a polite command to purchase.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Many Korean ads use the pattern 'Product + 은/는 + Claim'. The topic marker 은/는 (eun/neun) tells you what the sentence is about. For example, '이 제품은 피부에 좋아요' (i je-pum-eun pi-bu-e jo-a-yo) means 'This product is good for your skin.' The product comes first, then the claim. Another common pattern is 'Product + 이/가 + Number + 위' (i/ga + number + wi) to claim a ranking, as in '이 제품이 1위예요' (i je-pum-i il-wi-ye-yo) 'This product is number one.'

    When to use it

Use these patterns when you want to quickly extract the main message from an ad. Listen for the product name right after '이' (i) 'this' or '새로' (sae-ro) 'newly'. Claims often follow with '좋아요' (jo-a-yo) 'it's good', '있어요' (i-sseo-yo) 'it has', or '돼요' (dwae-yo) 'it becomes/works'. For example, '머리카락이 윤기 있어요' (meo-ri-ka-rak-i yun-gi i-sseo-yo) 'Hair has shine.' Recognizing these chunks helps you separate the product from the promise.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    이 제품은 새로 나왔어요.

    This product just came out.i je-pum-eun sae-ro na-wa-sseo-yo
    B

    아, 그래요? 뭐가 좋아요?

    Oh, really? What's good about it?a, geu-rae-yo? mwo-ga jo-a-yo?
    A

    피부에 좋아요. 그리고 1위 제품이에요.

    It's good for your skin. And it's the number one product.pi-bu-e jo-a-yo. geu-ri-go il-wi je-pum-i-e-yo
    B

    그럼 지금 구매하세요?

    Then should I buy now?geu-reom ji-geum gu-mae-ha-se-yo?

A little context goes a long way

Korean commercials often use a polite but friendly tone with '-요' (yo) endings, even when giving commands like '구매하세요' (gu-mae-ha-se-yo). This softens the directness. Also, claims like '1위' (il-wi) may be based on specific surveys or time periods, so pay attention to small print or qualifiers like '올해' (ol-hae) 'this year'.

    One thing to watch for

Thinking '제품' (je-pum) always means the brand name.

Try this instead: '제품' (je-pum) means 'product' in general. The brand name is usually a proper noun that comes before or after. For example, '이 제품은 삼성 TV예요' (i je-pum-eun sam-seong ti-bi-ye-yo) means 'This product is a Samsung TV.' Listen for the specific name, not just the word 'product'.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1In the sentence '이 제품은 피부에 좋아요', what is the product?

    Show a sample answer

The product is '이 제품' (this product), but the specific name is not given. The claim is that it's good for skin.

The topic marker '은' after '제품' shows that '이 제품' is the subject. The claim follows after the topic.

    2What does '1위 제품' mean?

    Show a sample answer

    It means 'number one product'.

'1위' (il-wi) means 'first place' or 'number one', and '제품' means 'product'. This is a common persuasive claim.

3How would you say 'Buy now' in Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    지금 구매하세요 (ji-geum gu-mae-ha-se-yo).

'지금' means 'now', and '구매하세요' is a polite command to buy. Other variations like '지금 사세요' (ji-geum sa-se-yo) are also possible but less formal.

    Take this with you

When you hear a Korean ad, first find the product name, then listen for the claim that follows. Focus on patterns like '제품은 ... 좋아요' and '1위' to quickly understand the persuasive message.
