Korean for Secondhand Pickups: Asking Permission to Test a Button

Learn polite Korean phrases to ask a seller if you can press or test a button before buying, with reusable patterns and a natural pickup dialogue.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

When you meet a seller in person for a secondhand item, you often want to check that a button or function still works. In Korean, the polite way to ask permission uses the verb 눌러보다 (to try pressing) and the pattern -아/어도 돼요? or -아/어도 될까요? This lesson gives you three reusable questions, shows how to distinguish pressing a button from testing overall operation, and models a short conversation at a pickup. You will practice polite informal speech, which is appropriate with a seller you have just met but are on friendly terms with.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a seller for permission to press a button using 버튼 눌러봐도 돼요?
    • ask to test whether something works using 작동 확인해봐도 될까요?
    • use 테스트 in a polite request and respond to a seller's answer.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    버튼 눌러봐도 돼요?

May I try pressing the button?

    beo-teun nul-leo-bwa-do dwae-yo?

Polite informal permission question. Use when you want to physically press one button, such as a power or volume button.

    작동 확인해봐도 될까요?

May I check whether it works?

    jak-dong hwa-gin-hae-bwa-do doel-kka-yo?

Slightly more polite and broader than the button question. Use when you want to test the overall function, not just one button.

    테스트해봐도 괜찮을까요?

Would it be okay if I tested it?

    te-seu-teu-hae-bwa-do gwaen-chan-eul-kka-yo?

Uses the loanword 테스트. Natural when the item is electronic and you want to run a quick test before deciding.

    잠깐 눌러보고 싶은데요.

I'd like to press it briefly.

    jam-kkan nul-leo-bo-go si-peun-de-yo

A softer way to signal your intention before asking directly. The ending -ㄴ데요 makes the request sound less blunt.

    네, 편하게 확인해보세요.

Yes, feel free to check it.

    ne, pyeon-ha-ge hwa-gin-hae-bo-se-yo

A typical seller response giving permission. 편하게 means 'comfortably' or 'at ease'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is verb stem + -아/어도 돼요? or -아/어도 될까요? It asks 'Is it okay if I...?' For 눌러보다 (to try pressing), the stem ends in a vowel, so you add -봐도 돼요? to get 버튼 눌러봐도 돼요? For 확인하다 (to check), the stem ends in 하, so you add -해봐도 될까요? to get 작동 확인해봐도 될까요? The -될까요? version is a little softer and more polite than -돼요? Both are fine with a seller you meet in person. You can swap the verb to fit the action: 충전해봐도 돼요? (May I try charging it?), 켜봐도 돼요? (May I try turning it on?).

    When to use it

Use these questions at the moment you are inspecting the item, before you hand over money. If you only want to press one button, 버튼 눌러봐도 돼요? is precise. If you want to check that the device turns on, connects, or responds, 작동 확인해봐도 될까요? is better because 작동 means 'operation' and 확인 means 'check'. If the seller seems busy or the item is expensive, choose the softer 테스트해봐도 괜찮을까요? Avoid touching the item before asking, especially with electronics. After permission, you can say 감사합니다 and test briefly.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean in-person secondhand pickups, polite informal speech (해요체) is the default with a seller you have just met. Using -될까요? instead of -돼요? adds a gentle, considerate tone. It is normal to inspect the item, but ask before touching buttons or screens. A seller may say 괜찮아요 or 편하게 하세요 to put you at ease. If they hesitate, accept it without pressure and ask about return or meeting terms instead.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 버튼 눌러도 돼요? without the -봐- part, which sounds like 'May I press the button?' as a plain action rather than 'May I try pressing it?'

Try this instead: Use 눌러봐도 돼요? to include the 'try' nuance. For example, 버튼 눌러봐도 돼요? is the natural request when you want to test the button before buying. The plain form 눌러도 돼요? is grammatically possible but less common in this inspection situation.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You want to press one button on a used camera. What polite question do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    버튼 눌러봐도 돼요?

This directly asks permission to try pressing the button. You could also say 버튼 눌러봐도 될까요? for a slightly softer tone.

2You want to check that a used speaker turns on and connects. Which phrase fits better: 버튼 눌러봐도 돼요? or 작동 확인해봐도 될까요?

    Show a sample answer

    작동 확인해봐도 될까요?

작동 확인 refers to checking overall operation, so it fits testing whether the speaker works. The button phrase is for a single button.

3The seller says '네, 편하게 확인해보세요.' What does this mean and what can you say next?

    Show a sample answer

It means 'Yes, feel free to check it.' You can say 감사합니다 and then test the item.

This is a common permission response. 감사합니다 is a natural polite thanks. You could also say 잘 볼게요, which means 'I'll take a good look.'

    Take this with you

At a Korean secondhand pickup, ask before touching: use 버튼 눌러봐도 돼요? for one button and 작동 확인해봐도 될까요? for overall function. Keep it polite informal, and thank the seller after testing.
