Telling a Short Personal Story in Korean: Sequencing a Beginning, Middle, and End
Learn to narrate a short personal story in Korean with clear time order using past-tense endings, time words like 어제 and 그다음, and the connective -고.

When you tell a short story in Korean, listeners expect clear time order: what happened first, what happened next, and how it ended. Korean marks this with past-tense verb endings, time words such as 어제 (eoje, yesterday) and 그다음 (geudaeum, after that), and the connective -고 (-go, and then). This lesson gives you a simple frame for a 3-4 sentence story about your own day. You will not need complex grammar: polite past forms and a few connectors are enough.
By the end, you can…
- say when a past event happened using 어제, 아침에, and 그다음.
- connect two past actions in order with the -고 ending.
- end a short personal story with a clear final sentence.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

어제 친구를 만났어요.
Yesterday I met a friend.
eo-je chin-gu-reul man-na-sseo-yo
Opening line. The object particle 를 marks 친구 as the object; 만났어요 is the polite past form of 만나다.
아침에 카페에 갔어요.
In the morning I went to a cafe.
a-chi-me ka-pe-e ga-sseo-yo
Use 에 with a time word like 아침 and with a destination like 카페. 갔어요 is the past form of 가다.
그다음에 커피를 마셨어요.
After that, I drank coffee.
geu-da-eu-me keo-pi-reul ma-syeo-sseo-yo
그다음에 signals the middle step. 마셨어요 is the past form of 마시다.
그리고 이야기를 많이 했어요.
And we talked a lot.
geu-ri-go i-ya-gi-reul ma-ni hae-sseo-yo
그리고 adds another action in the same time frame; it does not by itself mean 'after that'.
정말 재미있었어요.
It was really fun.
jeong-mal jae-mi-i-sseo-sseo-yo
A natural closing sentence. 재미있었어요 is the past form of 재미있다.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
Build your story with past-tense polite endings: -았어요/-었어요. Add -고 to link two actions by the same subject: 아침에 카페에 가고 커피를 마셨어요 (a-chi-me ka-pe-e ga-go keo-pi-reul ma-syeo-sseo-yo, 'In the morning I went to a cafe and drank coffee'). The tense is marked on the final verb; the -고 clause stays neutral. For a clear sequence, use time words instead: 아침에 카페에 갔어요. 그다음에 커피를 마셨어요.
When to use it
Use -고 when the actions are simply listed, and use 그다음에 or 그리고 나서 when you want to stress that one action happened after another. For a short story, a safe frame is: time word + past verb, then 그다음에 + past verb, then a feeling sentence like 정말 재미있었어요. Keep the same polite -요 style throughout unless you know the listener well.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
어제 뭐 했어요?
What did you do yesterday?eo-je mwo hae-sseo-yo?어제 친구를 만났어요.
Yesterday I met a friend.eo-je chin-gu-reul man-na-sseo-yo그다음에 뭐 했어요?
What did you do after that?geu-da-eu-me mwo hae-sseo-yo?그다음에 카페에 갔어요. 정말 재미있었어요.
After that, we went to a cafe. It was really fun.geu-da-eu-me ka-pe-e ga-sseo-yo. jeong-mal jae-mi-i-sseo-sseo-yoA little context goes a long way
Polite -요 speech is the safe default with acquaintances, coworkers, and strangers. With close friends, Koreans often switch to 반말 (ban-mal, casual speech), for example 어제 친구 만났어. Do not mix the two styles in one short story unless the relationship clearly allows it.
One thing to watch for
Using the present tense for a finished past event: 어제 카페에 가요.
Try this instead: Use the past form: 어제 카페에 갔어요 (eo-je ka-pe-e ga-sseo-yo, 'Yesterday I went to a cafe'). The time word 어제 does not change the verb tense by itself; the verb must carry the past ending.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you say 'Yesterday I met a friend' in polite Korean?
Show a sample answer
어제 친구를 만났어요.
어제 sets the past time, 친구를 marks the object, and 만났어요 is the polite past form. 어제 친구 만났어요 is also acceptable in casual speech.
2Which word clearly signals the middle step of a story?
Show a sample answer
그다음에
그다음에 means 'after that' and moves the story forward. 그리고 is possible but only adds information; it does not stress sequence as strongly.
3Turn 카페에 가다 into a polite past sentence.
Show a sample answer
카페에 갔어요.
The stem 가- combines with the past ending -았어요 to make 갔어요. The destination particle 에 stays the same.
Tell a short Korean story in three moves: time word plus past verb, 그다음에 plus past verb, then a closing feeling sentence such as 정말 재미있었어요.
