Korean for Sharing Past Experiences: Parties and Weddings

Learn to talk about past events in Korean: say a wedding was beautiful or that you had fun at a party, using past tense and experience-sharing expressions.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about past social events in Korean, such as parties and weddings. Unlike making plans, which uses future-oriented language, sharing experiences requires the past tense. You will practice key phrases to describe how an event was, express enjoyment, and ask others about their experiences. We will focus on the past tense forms of descriptive verbs and action verbs, and common expressions like '재미있었어요' (it was fun) and '아름다웠어요' (it was beautiful). By the end, you will be able to comfortably share your thoughts about a party or wedding you attended.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a past event using the past tense in Korean.
    • say that a wedding was beautiful or that I had fun at a party.
    • ask and answer simple questions about past social experiences.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    결혼식이 아름다웠어요.

    The wedding was beautiful.

    gyeol-hon-sik-i a-reum-da-wot-eo-yo

Use this to compliment a wedding you attended. '아름다웠어요' is the past tense of '아름답다' (beautiful).

    파티에서 재미있었어요.

I had fun at the party.

    pa-ti-e-seo jae-mi-iss-eot-eo-yo

This expresses that you enjoyed a party. '재미있었어요' is the past tense of '재미있다' (to be fun).

    어땠어요?

    How was it?

    eo-ttaet-eo-yo

A common question to ask about a past event. It is the past tense of '어때요?' (How is it?).

    정말 좋았어요.

    It was really good.

    jeong-mal jo-at-eo-yo

A general positive comment about any past experience. '좋았어요' is the past tense of '좋다' (to be good).

    즐거웠어요.

    It was enjoyable.

    jeul-geo-wot-eo-yo

Another way to say you had a good time. It is the past tense of '즐겁다' (to be enjoyable).

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To talk about past events, you need to change verbs and adjectives into the past tense. For stems ending in ㅏ or ㅗ, add -았어요; for all other stems, add -었어요. This applies to both action verbs and descriptive verbs. For example: 좋다 → 좋았어요 (was good), 재미있다 → 재미있었어요 (was fun), 아름답다 → 아름다웠어요 (was beautiful). Note that '아름답다' changes to '아름다웠어요' because of the ㅂ irregular conjugation. Also, to say 'at' a place where an action happens, use 에서: 파티에서 (at the party), 결혼식에서 (at the wedding).

    When to use it

Use these past tense forms when you are reflecting on an event that already happened. For example, after attending a wedding, you can say '결혼식이 아름다웠어요' to mean 'The wedding was beautiful.' If you want to ask someone about their experience, say '어땠어요?' (How was it?). To share that you had fun at a party, say '파티에서 재미있었어요.' These expressions are appropriate in casual and polite conversation. If you want to be more formal, you can use the polite formal ending -었습니다: 아름다웠습니다, 재미있었습니다.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    That sounds great. I want to go next time too.jo-at-get-eot-eo-yo. jeo-do da-eum-e ga-go si-peo-yo

A little context goes a long way

In Korean culture, weddings are often large events with many guests, and it is common to compliment the ceremony or the couple. When sharing experiences, Koreans may use expressive language like '정말' (really) to emphasize. Also, it is polite to ask about others' experiences to show interest. Remember that the past tense is essential when talking about events that have already occurred, and using the correct form shows your attention to detail.

    One thing to watch for

Using the present tense to describe a past event, such as saying '결혼식이 아름다워요' when you mean 'The wedding was beautiful.'

Try this instead: Use the past tense: '결혼식이 아름다웠어요.' The present tense '아름다워요' means 'is beautiful' and would refer to a current state, not a past event.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'The party was fun' in Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    파티가 재미있었어요.

This uses the past tense '재미있었어요' to describe the party. You could also say '파티에서 재미있었어요' if you want to emphasize 'at the party'.

2What is the past tense of '좋다' (to be good)?

    Show a sample answer

    좋았어요.

좋다 is a descriptive verb whose stem ends in ㅏ, so you add -았어요 to make the past tense: 좋았어요.

3How do you ask 'How was the wedding?' in Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    결혼식이 어땠어요?

This uses the past tense question form '어땠어요?' which means 'How was it?'. You can also say '결혼식은 어땠어요?' with the topic particle.

    Take this with you

To share past experiences in Korean, use the past tense: add -았어요 or -었어요 to verbs and adjectives. Practice key phrases like '아름다웠어요' and '재미있었어요' to talk about weddings and parties.
