Korean Summary Skills: How to Summarize a Short Story or Article in a Few Sentences
Learn to summarize a short Korean story or article in 2–3 sentences using essential patterns like 이야기는 …에 관한 거예요 and 핵심은 …예요. Focus on main points, not detailed retelling.

Summarizing in Korean means stating the topic, the main event or claim, and the result or point—without retelling every detail. In this lesson you will learn five practical patterns to summarize a short story or article in a few sentences. You will use topic markers 은/는, the verb 이에요/예요 for identification, and concise endings like -아요/어요. The goal is to capture the main points, not to narrate the full text. Practice with a short passage and build confidence in giving a clear, brief summary.
By the end, you can…
- state the topic of a short story or article in one Korean sentence.
- identify and say the main event or claim using a simple pattern.
- give the result or point of a text in one or two Korean sentences.
- summarize a short text in 2–3 sentences without retelling details.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

이 이야기는 …에 관한 거예요.
This story is about …
i i-ya-gi-neun …e gwan-han geo-ye-yo
Use to introduce the topic of a story or article. Replace … with a noun phrase, e.g., 이 이야기는 친구에 관한 거예요 (This story is about a friend).
주인공은 …예요/이에요.
The main character is …
ju-in-gong-eun …ye-yo/i-e-yo
Use for stories. For articles, replace 주인공 with 글쓴이 (author) or use a topic like 이 글은 …에 관한 거예요.
가장 중요한 건 …예요.
The most important thing is …
ga-jang jung-yo-han geon …ye-yo
Use to state the main point. The full form is 가장 중요한 것은 …예요; the shortened 건 is common in speech.
그래서 결국 …았어요/었어요.
So in the end, … (past tense)
geu-rae-seo gyeol-guk …a-sseo-yo/eo-sseo-yo
Use to give the result. Attach the past tense ending to the verb stem, e.g., 그래서 결국 친구를 만났어요 (So in the end, he met a friend).
요약하면 …예요.
In summary, it is …
yo-yak-ha-myeon …ye-yo
Use to give a final one-sentence summary. Often followed by a noun phrase or a short clause.

Make it make sense
Useful pattern
To summarize, use a three-part structure: topic + main event + result. Start with 이 이야기는 …에 관한 거예요 (This story is about …). Then state the main event with 주인공은 …했어요 (The main character did …). Finish with 그래서 결국 …았어요/었어요 (So in the end, …). For articles, replace 이야기 with 글 (article) and 주인공 with 글쓴이 (author). Example: 이 글은 환경 보호에 관한 거예요. 글쓴이는 재활용이 중요하다고 말해요. 그래서 우리는 분리수거를 해야 해요. (This article is about environmental protection. The author says recycling is important. So we must separate trash.)
When to use it
Use these patterns when you need to give a brief summary in class, a book report, or a conversation. They are appropriate for both spoken and written Korean. For a story, focus on the main character and the key event. For an article, focus on the topic and the author’s claim. Avoid listing every detail; instead, choose one or two main points. For example, if the story is about a boy who lost his dog and found it, you can say: 주인공은 개를 잃어버렸어요. 그래서 결국 개를 찾았어요. (The main character lost his dog. So in the end, he found the dog.) This is enough for a summary.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
이 이야기는 무엇에 관한 거예요?
What is this story about?i i-ya-gi-neun mu-eo-se gwan-han geo-ye-yo?이 이야기는 친구에 관한 거예요. 주인공은 민수예요.
This story is about a friend. The main character is Minsu.i i-ya-gi-neun chin-gu-e gwan-han geo-ye-yo. ju-in-gong-eun min-su-ye-yo.그래서 결국 어떻게 됐어요?
So what happened in the end?geu-rae-seo gyeol-guk eo-tteo-ke dwae-sseo-yo?그래서 결국 민수는 친구를 만났어요. 요약하면 우정에 관한 이야기예요.
So in the end, Minsu met his friend. In summary, it’s a story about friendship.geu-rae-seo gyeol-guk min-su-neun chin-gu-reul man-na-sseo-yo. yo-yak-ha-myeon u-jeong-e gwan-han i-ya-gi-ye-yo.A little context goes a long way
In Korean, summaries often use the polite informal style (해요체) with -요 endings, which is appropriate for most conversations and presentations. When summarizing in a formal setting, such as a school report, you may use the formal polite style (합니다체) with -ㅂ니다 endings. Also, Korean summaries tend to state the topic and main point directly, without lengthy introductions. It is common to use the phrase 요약하면 (in summary) to signal the conclusion.
One thing to watch for
Retelling every detail of the story in the summary.
Try this instead: A summary should only include the main points. Instead of listing all events, focus on the topic, main event, and result. For example, instead of saying 주인공은 아침에 일어나서 밥을 먹고 학교에 갔어요. 그리고 친구를 만났어요. 그리고 … (The main character woke up, ate, went to school, met a friend, and …), say 주인공은 학교에서 친구를 만났어요. 그래서 결국 기뻤어요. (The main character met a friend at school. So in the end, he was happy.)
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you say 'This story is about a family' in Korean?
Show a sample answer
이 이야기는 가족에 관한 거예요.
This uses the pattern 이 이야기는 …에 관한 거예요 with the noun 가족 (family). You could also say 이 이야기는 가족 이야기예요, which is equally correct.
2What is the Korean phrase for 'The most important thing is friendship'?
Show a sample answer
가장 중요한 건 우정이에요.
This uses 가장 중요한 건 …예요. The full form is 가장 중요한 것은 …예요, but 건 is a common contraction. You could also say 가장 중요한 것은 우정이에요.
3Summarize this short story in one Korean sentence: A girl lost her wallet, but her friend found it and returned it.
Show a sample answer
주인공은 지갑을 잃어버렸지만, 친구가 찾아서 돌려줬어요.
This sentence captures the main event and result. You could also say 주인공은 지갑을 잃어버렸어요. 그래서 결국 친구가 찾아 줬어요. Both are valid summaries.
To summarize in Korean, state the topic, the main event or claim, and the result in 2–3 sentences. Use patterns like 이 이야기는 …에 관한 거예요 and 그래서 결국 …았어요/었어요, and avoid retelling every detail.
