At an airport, losing your checked bag is stressful, and you need clear, polite Korean to get help quickly. This lesson focuses on one practical situation: reporting missing luggage at the baggage service desk. You will learn how to state that your bag has not arrived, describe it, show your baggage claim tag, and ask what happens next. The key sentence is 제 짐이 안 나왔어요 (je jim-i an nawasseoyo), which literally means 'my luggage did not come out.' Korean often uses this natural negative past form rather than a direct equivalent of 'is missing.' You will also practice polite request endings such as -아/어 주세요 and the formal question form -나요? so you can communicate calmly with airline staff.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that my checked luggage has not arrived using 제 짐이 안 나왔어요.
    • show my baggage claim tag and ask staff to help locate my bag.
    • describe my suitcase and ask what the next step in the claim process is.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    제 짐이 안 나왔어요.

My luggage did not come out. / My luggage is missing.

    je jim-i an nawasseoyo

Use this at the baggage service desk when your checked bag does not appear on the belt. 제 is the polite 'my' before a noun.

    이거 제 짐표예요.

This is my baggage claim tag.

    igeo je jimpyo-yeyo

Say this while handing over your baggage claim tag. 짐표 is the standard word for the tag attached to your boarding pass.

    검은색 캐리어예요.

    It is a black suitcase.

    geomeunsaek kaerieo-yeyo

Use this pattern to describe color and type. Replace 검은색 with other colors such as 파란색 (blue) or 빨간색 (red).

    찾아 주실 수 있어요?

Could you find it for me?

    chaja jusil su isseoyo

A polite request using -아/어 주실 수 있어요? This is softer than a direct command and is appropriate with airline staff.

    다음은 어떻게 해야 돼요?

    What should I do next?

    daeumeun eotteoke haeya dwaeyo

Use this to ask about the next step in the claim process after you have reported the missing bag.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To report a missing item, Korean commonly uses the negative past form 안 + verb + -았/었어요. For luggage, say 제 짐이 안 나왔어요 (je jim-i an nawasseoyo), literally 'my luggage did not come out.' The subject marker 이 attaches to 짐 because it ends in a consonant. If you want to be more formal with airline staff, you can say 제 짐이 안 나왔습니다 (je jim-i an nawatseumnida). To ask staff to help, use 찾아 주실 수 있어요? (chaja jusil su isseoyo), which means 'could you find it for me?' The verb 찾다 (chatda) means 'to find' or 'to look for.'

    When to use it

Use these phrases at the baggage service desk, not at the check-in counter. First state the problem: 제 짐이 안 나왔어요. Then show your tag: 이거 제 짐표예요. After that, describe the bag: 검은색 캐리어예요. Finally, ask about the process: 다음은 어떻게 해야 돼요? If staff ask for your flight number, answer with 편명 (pyeonmyeong) or say 제 편은 KE123이에요 (je pyeon-eun KE123-ieyo). Keep your tone polite and calm; use -요 endings or -습니다 endings rather than casual speech.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    안녕하세요. 제 짐이 안 나왔어요.

Hello. My luggage did not come out.annyeonghaseyo. je jim-i an nawasseoyo.
    B

    네, 짐표를 보여 주세요.

Yes, please show me your baggage claim tag.ne, jimpyo-reul boyeo juseyo.
    A

    여기 있어요. 검은색 캐리어예요.

Here it is. It is a black suitcase.yeogi isseoyo. geomeunsaek kaerieo-yeyo.
    B

알겠습니다. 찾아 드릴게요. 다음은 어떻게 하실래요?

All right. We will find it for you. What would you like to do next?algesseumnida. chaja deurilgeyo. daeumeun eotteoke hasillaeyo?

A little context goes a long way

Korean airport staff usually speak politely and may use formal -습니다 endings. As a traveler, using polite -요 or -습니다 forms shows respect and helps the conversation go smoothly. If you speak casually, it can sound rude in a service setting. Also, Korean often omits the subject when it is clear, so you may hear 짐표 보여 주세요 without a subject. Listen for the verb ending to understand the request.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 제 짐이 없어요 (je jim-i eopseoyo) to mean 'my luggage is missing.'

Try this instead: 없어요 means 'there is not' or 'I do not have,' which can sound like the luggage does not exist at all. For a bag that failed to arrive on the belt, say 제 짐이 안 나왔어요 (je jim-i an nawasseoyo). Use 없어요 for something you simply do not possess, such as 지금 현금이 없어요 (I do not have cash right now).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'My luggage did not come out' politely in Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    제 짐이 안 나왔어요.

This uses 제 (my), 짐 (luggage), the subject marker 이, and the negative past form 안 나왔어요. A more formal alternative is 제 짐이 안 나왔습니다.

2What should you say while handing your baggage claim tag to the staff?

    Show a sample answer

    이거 제 짐표예요.

This means 'This is my baggage claim tag.' You could also say 여기 제 짐표 있어요 (Here is my baggage claim tag), which is equally acceptable.

3Ask the staff what you should do next in the claim process.

    Show a sample answer

    다음은 어떻게 해야 돼요?

This asks 'What should I do next?' A slightly more formal version is 다음은 어떻게 해야 됩니까? Both are appropriate at a service desk.

    Take this with you

At the baggage service desk, start with 제 짐이 안 나왔어요, show your 짐표, describe your bag, and ask 다음은 어떻게 해야 돼요? Keep your endings polite.
