Korean for a Public Bike That Won't Unlock: Asking Staff Before Trying Another

Learn polite Korean to report a bike that won't release, check the app status, wait a moment, and ask to rent a different bike without risking a double charge.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

You scan the code, the app says the bike is unlocked, but the wheel will not come out of the rack. This lesson gives you the exact Korean you need at that moment: how to say the lock is not releasing, how to say it is still locked, and how to ask staff whether you can rent a different bike. You will also learn how to check the app status and how to ask about being charged twice, so you can solve the problem politely without guessing.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that the bike lock is not releasing and that it is still locked.
    • ask staff to check the app status and wait a moment before trying another bike.
    • request to rent a different bike and ask whether I might be charged twice.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    안 풀려요.

    It won't release. / It isn't unlocking.

    an pul-lyeo-yo

Use right after scanning when the wheel or lock does not come free. 안 풀려요 is the natural everyday way to say something is stuck or not loosening.

    잠겨 있어요.

    It's locked. / It's still locked.

    jam-gyeo i-sseo-yo

Use when the bike clearly remains locked even though the app shows it as unlocked. The -아/어 있어요 form describes a state that is still in effect.

    다른 거 빌릴게요.

    I'll rent a different one.

    da-reun geo bil-lil-ge-yo

A polite, natural way to say you will take another bike. 다른 거 is casual but standard in speech; in a very formal setting you can say 다른 자전거를 빌리겠습니다.

    앱에서 확인해 주세요.

Please check it in the app.

    aep-e-seo hwa-gin-hae ju-se-yo

Ask staff to look at the rental status on their screen or in the app. 확인하다 means to check or verify.

    잠시만 기다려 주세요.

    Please wait a moment.

    jam-si-man gi-da-ryeo ju-se-yo

Useful when the lock may need a few seconds to release. You can also say this to yourself while waiting before trying another bike.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 안 + verb + -아/어요 expresses that something does not happen or is not in the desired state. 안 풀려요 means "it won't release," and 안 열려요 means "it won't open." For a state that is still true, use the -아/어 있어요 form: 잠겨 있어요 means "it is locked" or "it remains locked." Compare this with 잠겼어요, which simply reports that it locked. When you want to switch to another bike, 다른 거 빌릴게요 uses -(으)ㄹ게요, which expresses your intention or decision in a polite, cooperative way.

    When to use it

Say 안 풀려요 when you have scanned the code and the app shows success, but the physical lock does not release. Say 잠겨 있어요 when you can see or feel that the bike is still locked. If a staff member is nearby, start with 저기요 to get attention, then say 안 풀려요. Ask 앱에서 확인해 주세요 so they can check whether the rental is active. If you want to avoid being charged twice, ask 이거 결제됐어요? ("Has this been charged?") or 두 번 결제될까요? ("Could I be charged twice?"). Then say 다른 거 빌릴게요 before moving to another bike.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Korea, public bike problems are usually handled through the app or a service center rather than a station attendant, so staff may not be standing nearby. When you do speak to someone, polite -요 forms and 저기요 are appropriate. Avoid raising your voice; explaining the app status calmly is more effective. If you cannot resolve it on the spot, asking how to report the issue is a normal next step.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 안 잠겨요 to mean "it won't unlock."

Try this instead: 안 잠겨요 means "it isn't locked," which is the opposite of what you need. To say the lock will not release, use 안 풀려요 or 잠금이 안 풀려요. If the bike is still locked, say 잠겨 있어요.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1The app says the bike is unlocked, but the wheel will not come out. What do you say to a staff member?

    Show a sample answer

    저기요, 이 자전거 안 풀려요.

This politely gets attention and states the problem directly. You could also say 잠금이 안 풀려요, which is slightly more specific.

2You want to check whether the rental is still active before walking away. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    앱에서 확인해 주세요.

This asks staff to check the app status. If you want to ask about payment, you can add 이거 결제됐어요?

3You decide to take another bike instead. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    다른 거 빌릴게요.

This states your intention politely. In a more formal situation, 다른 자전거를 빌리겠습니다 is also correct.

    Take this with you

When a public bike won't unlock, say 안 풀려요 for "it won't release" and 잠겨 있어요 for "it's still locked." Ask staff to check the app, wait a moment, and use 다른 거 빌릴게요 when you switch bikes. Ask about the charge before you walk away.
