Korean for Public Bikes: Reading a Closed-Station Sign and Asking Where to Return

Learn to read 이용 중지 and 공사 on a taped notice, ask 여기 반납 안 돼요?, check the date, and find the next open rack politely.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends planning a trip around a map in a warmly lit café

You roll up to the public bicycle rack near your destination, but a printed notice is taped across the terminals. Before you panic or force a return, you need to read two key words: 이용 중지 (temporary suspension of use) and 공사 (construction). This lesson teaches you to understand the notice, check the date, and ask a staff member or passerby where the next open rack is. You will practice polite questions at an elementary level, using Hangul and Revised Romanization.

    By the end, you can…

    • read a closure notice and identify 이용 중지 and 공사.
    • ask 여기 반납 안 돼요? to confirm whether return is impossible.
    • ask where the next open rack is and check the date on the sign.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    이용 중지

suspension of use / temporarily out of service

    i-yong jung-ji

Appears on the taped notice. It means the station cannot be used right now, not that the whole system is closed.

    공사

    construction / repair work

    gong-sa

Often the reason for the closure. You may see 공사 중 (under construction) next to it.

    여기 반납 안 돼요?

Can't I return it here? / Is return not possible here?

    yeo-gi ban-nap an dwae-yo

Polite question to confirm the situation. Use it with staff or a passerby when the sign is unclear.

    언제부터 언제까지예요?

From when to when is it?

    eon-je-bu-teo eon-je-kka-ji-ye-yo

Asks for the date range on the notice. Point to the dates while asking if needed.

    다음 대여소가 어디예요?

    Where is the next station?

    da-eum dae-yeo-so-ga eo-di-ye-yo

Use 대여소 for a bike rental station. This asks for the nearest open alternative.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern '안 돼요?' turns a statement into a polite check. Put a verb or action before it: 여기 반납 안 돼요? (Can't I return here?), 이거 사용 안 돼요? (Can't I use this?). The full negative is 안 됩니다, but 안 돼요? is natural and polite in everyday speech. If you want to be softer, start with 혹시 (hok-si, 'by any chance'): 혹시 여기 반납 안 돼요? This does not change the meaning, but it sounds more careful when you are asking a stranger.

    When to use it

Use these phrases only when you see a notice or a physical barrier. If the rack looks normal, do not ask 여기 반납 안 돼요? because it may confuse the listener. When the sign says 이용 중지 and 공사, first check the date range: look for numbers like 5월 10일–5월 12일 (May 10–May 12). Then ask 언제부터 언제까지예요? if the dates are unclear. After that, ask 다음 대여소가 어디예요? to find the next open rack. If a staff member is not nearby, a passerby can still answer the location question.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    No, it's temporarily suspended right now. It's under construction.ne, ji-geum i-yong jung-ji-ye-yo. gong-sa jung-i-e-yo

    언제부터 언제까지예요?

From when to when is it?eon-je-bu-teo eon-je-kka-ji-ye-yo
    B

오늘부터 모레까지예요. 다음 대여소는 저쪽에 있어요.

From today until the day after tomorrow. The next station is over there.o-neul-bu-teo mo-re-kka-ji-ye-yo. da-eum dae-yeo-so-neun jeo-jjok-e i-sseo-yo

A little context goes a long way

In Korea, public bike notices often use brief Sino-Korean terms like 이용 중지 and 공사 rather than full sentences. Staff and passersby usually respond helpfully if you ask politely with 저기요 (excuse me) and the -요 ending. Avoid touching the terminals when a notice is taped over them; the tape itself signals that returns are not being accepted. If you cannot find staff, asking at a nearby convenience store is common and acceptable.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 여기 반납 안 돼요? when the rack is open and working, just because you are unsure.

Try this instead: Only use this question when you see a closure notice or barrier. If the rack looks normal, simply return the bike. If you are still unsure, ask a softer question like 이거 여기 반납해도 돼요? (Is it okay to return this here?) instead of assuming it is closed.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You see a sign that says 이용 중지 and 공사. What do these two words tell you?

    Show a sample answer

The station is temporarily suspended from use because of construction or repair work.

이용 중지 means use is stopped, and 공사 means construction. Together they explain why you cannot return the bike there right now. Other valid answers may mention repair work or temporary closure.

2Ask a staff member whether return is impossible here, using a polite question.

    Show a sample answer

    여기 반납 안 돼요?

This directly asks 'Can't I return it here?' with the polite -요 ending. You could also say 혹시 여기 반납 안 돼요? to sound softer. Both are acceptable.

3You need to find the next open rack. What question do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    다음 대여소가 어디예요?

대여소 means rental station, and 다음 means next. This asks where the next station is. You could also point at your phone map and ask 여기요? (here?) as a follow-up.

    Take this with you

When a public bike rack is taped off, read 이용 중지 and 공사, check the date range, and ask 여기 반납 안 돼요? only if the notice is unclear. Then use 다음 대여소가 어디예요? to find the next open rack politely.
