Korean for Servers: Describing a Dish Professionally at the Table

Learn intermediate Korean patterns to present and describe a dish to diners as a server, using polite service register, sensory description, and allergen and spice-level checks.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

When you serve a dish in Korean, you are not just naming food; you are guiding the diner through what they are about to eat. This lesson teaches the professional presentation register used in Korean restaurants: polite -요 style with service vocabulary, how to describe ingredients, cooking method, texture, and spice level, and how to check allergies before the first bite. You will practice full sentences you can say while placing the plate, not just isolated food words. The focus is on sounding helpful and calm rather than promotional, which is the key difference between presenting a dish and recommending one.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a dish's main ingredients, cooking method, and flavor in polite service Korean.
    • check for allergies and adjust the description of spice level or texture for a diner.
    • present a plate at the table using natural service phrases and a short closing line.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    이 메뉴는 제가 설명해 드릴게요.

I will explain this menu item for you.

    i me-nyu-neun je-ga seol-myeong-hae deu-ril-ge-yo

Use when the diner looks unsure or asks about a dish; it signals that a full description is coming.

    주재료는 소고기와 채소입니다.

The main ingredients are beef and vegetables.

    ju-jae-ryo-neun so-go-gi-wa chae-so-im-ni-da

A clean, factual opening for describing what is in the dish. Use -입니다 for a slightly formal service tone.

    직접 구운 뒤에 양념에 버무렸습니다.

It was grilled first and then tossed in seasoning.

    jik-jeop gu-un dwi-e yang-nyeom-e beo-mu-ryeot-seum-ni-da

Explains cooking method and order of preparation; useful for grilled or marinated dishes.

    맛은 조금 매콤한 편입니다.

The flavor is on the slightly spicy side.

    ma-seun jo-geum mae-ko-man pyeon-im-ni-da

Use -편입니다 to soften a description; it means 'tends to be' and avoids overpromising.

    혹시 알레르기가 있으신가요?

Do you happen to have any allergies?

    hok-si al-le-reu-gi-ga i-sseu-sin-ga-yo

Ask before serving when the dish contains common allergens such as nuts, shellfish, or dairy.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern for presenting a dish is noun + 입니다 for facts and verb stem + -았/었습니다 for preparation. For example, 주재료는 닭고기입니다 (The main ingredient is chicken) states a fact, while 닭고기를 먼저 삶았습니다 (The chicken was boiled first) explains the cooking step. To describe flavor softly, attach -ㄴ/은 편입니다: 짠 편입니다 (It tends to be salty), 단 편입니다 (It tends to be sweet). This pattern is more professional than saying 너무 짜요 (It's too salty), which sounds like a complaint rather than a description.

    When to use it

Use this presentation register when you place the plate and the diner has not asked a direct question, or when they ask 이게 뭐예요? (What is this?). Start with the main ingredient, then the cooking method, then one sensory detail. For example: 주재료는 돼지고기입니다. 오랜 시간 구웠습니다. 겉은 바삭하고 속은 부드럽습니다. (The main ingredient is pork. It was grilled for a long time. The outside is crispy and the inside is tender.) If the diner mentions an allergy, switch immediately to a confirmation question: 견과류는 들어가지 않았습니다. 괜찮으시겠어요? (There are no nuts in it. Will that be alright?) Keep the tone calm and factual; do not add sales pressure such as 꼭 드셔 보세요 unless the diner asks for a recommendation.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

이 메뉴는 제가 설명해 드릴게요. 주재료는 소고기와 채소입니다.

    I will explain this menu item for you. The main ingredients are beef and vegetables.i me-nyu-neun je-ga seol-myeong-hae deu-ril-ge-yo. ju-jae-ryo-neun so-go-gi-wa chae-so-im-ni-da.
    B

    고기가 많이 매운가요?

    Is the meat very spicy?go-gi-ga ma-ni mae-un-ga-yo?
    A

맛은 조금 매콤한 편입니다. 혹시 알레르기가 있으신가요?

The flavor is on the slightly spicy side. Do you happen to have any allergies?ma-seun jo-geum mae-ko-man pyeon-im-ni-da. hok-si al-le-reu-gi-ga i-sseu-sin-ga-yo?
    B

    견과류 알레르기가 있어요.

    I have a nut allergy.gyeon-gwa-ryu al-le-reu-gi-ga i-sseo-yo.

A little context goes a long way

Korean service language often uses the polite -요 style with the honorific suffix -시- when addressing diners, as in 알레르기가 있으신가요? rather than 있나요?. This is not overly formal; it is the standard respectful register in restaurants. Also, describing a dish factually is preferred over enthusiastic selling. A server who calmly lists ingredients and preparation steps sounds more trustworthy than one who insists the dish is the best.

    One thing to watch for

Using casual or blunt statements such as 이거 매워요 or 이거 소고기야 when presenting a dish to a diner.

Try this instead: Use the polite service register with full sentences: 이 메뉴는 조금 매콤한 편입니다 (This menu item is on the slightly spicy side) and 주재료는 소고기입니다 (The main ingredient is beef). The casual form 이거 소고기야 is only for close friends and would sound unprofessional at the table.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'The main ingredients are beef and vegetables' in polite service Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    주재료는 소고기와 채소입니다.

This uses the factual -입니다 ending and lists ingredients with 와. A valid alternative is 주재료는 소고기하고 채소예요, which is slightly less formal but still polite.

2A diner asks if a dish is very spicy. Give a softened description using -편입니다.

    Show a sample answer

    맛은 조금 매콤한 편입니다.

The -편입니다 pattern means 'tends to be' and softens the claim. You could also say 그렇게 맵지 않은 편입니다 if the dish is mild, which is equally correct.

3What question should you ask before serving a dish that may contain nuts?

    Show a sample answer

    혹시 알레르기가 있으신가요?

This asks about allergies politely with the honorific -시-. A more specific version is 견과류 알레르기가 있으신가요?, which names the allergen directly.

    Take this with you

Present a dish in Korean by stating the main ingredient with -입니다, then the cooking method with -았/었습니다, then one soft sensory detail with -편입니다, and always check allergies with 혹시 알레르기가 있으신가요? before the diner begins eating.
