How to Say "Why don't we...?" in Korean: Polite Suggestions with -지 않을까요?

Learn the Korean pattern -지 않을까요? to suggest doing something together politely, and see how it differs from blunt -자 suggestions.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

In Korean, the natural way to say "Why don't we...?" is not a literal translation. Instead, you attach -지 않을까요? to a verb stem. This turns a plain action into a gentle, open suggestion: "Shall we...? / Why don't we...?" It is softer than the direct -자 ending, which can sound pushy with people you do not know well. In this lesson you will learn the pattern, hear it in a short dialogue, and compare it with the more direct form so you can choose the right tone.

    By the end, you can…

    • form a polite suggestion with the pattern -지 않을까요?
    • tell the difference between -지 않을까요? and the direct -자 ending

    Words you’ll actually use

    같이 가지 않을까요?

    Why don't we go together?

    ga-chi ga-ji an-eul-kka-yo?

Polite suggestion to a group or someone you are not close to. The verb stem is 가- (from 가다), which takes -지 않을까요?.

    내일 만나지 않을까요?

    Why don't we meet tomorrow?

    nae-il man-na-ji an-eul-kka-yo?

Use when proposing a time. The verb stem is 만나- (from 만나다), which takes -지 않을까요?; the ending keeps the tone open, not demanding.

    여기서 쉬지 않을까요?

    Why don't we rest here?

    yeo-gi-seo swi-ji an-eul-kka-yo?

Suggests a break during an activity. The stem 쉬- (from 쉬다) means "to rest."

    먼저 이야기하지 않을까요?

    Why don't we talk first?

    meon-jeo i-ya-gi-ha-ji an-eul-kka-yo?

A polite way to propose discussing something before acting. The stem is 이야기하- (from 이야기하다).

    우리 같이 먹지 않을까요?

    Why don't we eat together?

    u-ri ga-chi meok-ji an-eul-kka-yo?

Adding 우리 ("we") makes the shared activity clear. Common when inviting someone to a meal. The stem is 먹- (from 먹다).

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Take a verb stem and add -지 않을까요?. For example, 가다 ("to go") has the stem 가-, which becomes 가지 않을까요? ("Why don't we go?"). 먹다 ("to eat") has the stem 먹-, which becomes 먹지 않을까요? ("Why don't we eat?"). The literal meaning is "Wouldn't it be...?", but in everyday Korean it works as a soft suggestion. You can add 우리 ("we") or 같이 ("together") to make the shared action clear: 우리 같이 가지 않을까요?.

    When to use it

Use -지 않을까요? with coworkers, acquaintances, or anyone you want to treat politely. It leaves room for the other person to say no without awkwardness. Compare the direct -자 form: 가지 않을까요? is a gentle "Why don't we go?", while 가자 is a blunt "Let's go." 가자 is fine among close friends or people younger than you, but it can sound pushy in a formal meeting. If you are unsure, choose -지 않을까요?.

    B

    Yes, let's do that.ne, geu-reo-ke hae-yo.

A little context goes a long way

Korean politeness is often built into verb endings rather than separate words like "please." The -지 않을까요? ending sounds considerate because it invites agreement instead of stating a plan. With close friends, the shorter -자 form is common and not rude; with strangers, older people, or in workplace settings, the softer ending is usually safer.

    One thing to watch for

Using the direct -자 ending with a boss or a new acquaintance, as in 우리 내일 만나자.

Try this instead: Use the polite suggestion pattern instead: 우리 내일 만나지 않을까요? This keeps the suggestion open and respectful. Save 만나자 for close friends or people clearly younger than you.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you politely suggest "Why don't we go together?" using 가다?

    Show a sample answer

    같이 가지 않을까요?

The verb stem is 가- (from 가다), which takes -지 않을까요?. Adding 같이 ("together") makes the shared activity clear. 우리 같이 가지 않을까요? is also correct.

2Which sounds more direct: 가지 않을까요? or 가자?

    Show a sample answer

    가자 is more direct.

가자 is the plain "Let's go" form, used with close friends or people younger than you. 가지 않을까요? is the softer, polite suggestion.

3Turn 먹다 into a polite suggestion meaning "Why don't we eat?"

    Show a sample answer

    먹지 않을까요?

Attach -지 않을까요? to the stem 먹-. You may add 우리 or 같이: 우리 같이 먹지 않을까요?.

    Take this with you

To make a polite suggestion in Korean, attach -지 않을까요? to a verb stem. Use it with people you want to treat respectfully, and save the direct -자 form for close friends.
