How to Make Suggestions in Korean Without Sounding Pushy

Learn beginner Korean patterns for suggesting ideas politely, softening them with -ㄹ까요? and -는 게 어때요?, and responding to other people's suggestions naturally.

A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

In Korean, suggesting something is not just about the words you choose; it is also about how much space you leave for the other person to say no. A direct English-style suggestion can sound like a decision when it is translated word for word. This lesson teaches beginner-friendly patterns such as -ㄹ까요? and -는 게 어때요? that invite agreement rather than demand it. You will also learn short responses that accept, soften, or gently decline an idea. The focus is suggestions, not advice, so you will practice asking what the group wants to do rather than telling someone what they should do.

    By the end, you can…

    • suggest an activity in Korean using -ㄹ까요? and -는 게 어때요?
    • soften a suggestion so it sounds like an invitation, not a decision
    • accept, gently decline, or adjust another person's suggestion in Korean

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    우리 같이 갈까요?

    Shall we go together?

    u-ri ga-chi gal-kka-yo?

A friendly group suggestion. 우리 means 'we' and 같이 means 'together', so it sounds inclusive.

    커피 마시는 게 어때요?

    How about drinking coffee?

    keo-pi ma-si-neun ge eo-ttae-yo?

A polite suggestion pattern. The literal sense is 'How is it if we drink coffee?' It is softer than a command.

    이거 어때요?

    How about this one?

    i-geo eo-ttae-yo?

Useful when choosing between options, such as a menu item, a time, or a place.

    그거 좋아요.

That sounds good. / I like that.

    geu-geo jo-a-yo.

A simple, natural way to accept someone's suggestion without overcommitting.

    저는 좀 어려울 것 같아요.

It might be a little difficult for me.

    jeo-neun jom eo-ryeo-ul geot ga-ta-yo.

A gentle decline. The expression -것 같아요 softens the statement so it does not sound blunt.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern -ㄹ까요? attaches to a verb stem and asks, in effect, 'Shall we...?' or 'Do you think we should...?' It is a suggestion framed as a question, so the listener can answer freely. With a stem ending in a vowel, add -ㄹ까요?; with a consonant, add -을까요?. For example, 가다 (gada, 'to go') becomes 갈까요? (gal-kka-yo?) and 먹다 (meokda, 'to eat') becomes 먹을까요? (meo-geul-kka-yo?). A second useful pattern is -는 게 어때요? (neun ge eo-ttae-yo?), which means 'How about doing...?' It is slightly more explicit as a suggestion but still polite. For example, 영화 보는 게 어때요? (yeong-hwa bo-neun ge eo-ttae-yo?) means 'How about watching a movie?'

    When to use it

Use -ㄹ까요? when you want to check in with a group or a friend before making a plan. It works well for shared activities: 우리 같이 갈까요? (u-ri ga-chi gal-kka-yo?, 'Shall we go together?') or 뭐 먹을까요? (mwo meo-geul-kka-yo?, 'What shall we eat?'). Use -는 게 어때요? when you are offering one specific option among several. If you want to be extra gentle, add 혹시 (hok-si, 'perhaps') at the beginning: 혹시 이 시간은 어때요? (hok-si i si-ga-neun eo-ttae-yo?, 'How about this time, perhaps?'). To respond, 그거 좋아요 (geu-geo jo-a-yo) accepts an idea, while 저는 좀 어려울 것 같아요 (jeo-neun jom eo-ryeo-ul geot ga-ta-yo) declines softly. You can also adjust a suggestion with 그럼 이건 어때요? (geu-reom i-geon eo-ttae-yo?, 'Then how about this one?').

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    오늘 저녁에 우리 같이 갈까요?

    Shall we go together this evening?o-neul jeo-nyeo-ge u-ri ga-chi gal-kka-yo?
    B

    네, 좋아요. 어디에 갈까요?

Yes, sounds good. Where shall we go?ne, jo-a-yo. eo-di-e gal-kka-yo?

    조용한 카페는 어때요?

    How about a quiet cafe?jo-yong-han ka-pe-neun eo-ttae-yo?
    B

저는 좀 어려울 것 같아요. 그럼 공원은 어때요?

That might be a little difficult for me. Then how about a park?jeo-neun jom eo-ryeo-ul geot ga-ta-yo. geu-reom gong-wo-neun eo-ttae-yo?

A little context goes a long way

Korean suggestions often sound softer when they are framed as questions rather than statements. Among friends, dropping 요 is common, but with acquaintances, coworkers, or people you have just met, keeping 요 is safer. A gentle decline such as 어려울 것 같아요 is usually preferred over a direct 아니요, 안 돼요, which can sound abrupt. Age and workplace hierarchy can affect which pattern feels appropriate, so listen to how people around you phrase invitations and mirror that level of politeness.

    One thing to watch for

Using a direct command form such as 가요 or 먹어요 when you mean 'Shall we go?' or 'How about eating?'

Try this instead: Use a suggestion question instead. Say 갈까요? (gal-kka-yo?) for 'Shall we go?' and 먹을까요? (meo-geul-kka-yo?) for 'Shall we eat?' If you want to offer a specific option, use -는 게 어때요?: 영화 보는 게 어때요? (yeong-hwa bo-neun ge eo-ttae-yo?, 'How about watching a movie?').

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you suggest going to a cafe together using -ㄹ까요?

    Show a sample answer

    카페에 갈까요?

갈까요? comes from 가다 plus -ㄹ까요? and asks 'Shall we go?' Adding 카페에 makes the destination clear. 우리 같이 카페에 갈까요? is also correct and sounds more inclusive.

2A friend suggests a movie. How do you accept it naturally?

    Show a sample answer

    그거 좋아요.

그거 좋아요 means 'That sounds good' or 'I like that.' It accepts the idea without overcommitting. 네, 좋아요 is also fine.

3How do you gently decline a suggestion about meeting early?

    Show a sample answer

    저는 좀 어려울 것 같아요.

This means 'It might be a little difficult for me.' The -것 같아요 ending softens the refusal. 미안하지만 어려울 것 같아요 is also acceptable if you want to add an apology.

    Take this with you

Suggest with a question, not a command: use -ㄹ까요? for 'Shall we...?' and -는 게 어때요? for 'How about...?' Then accept with 그거 좋아요 or decline gently with 어려울 것 같아요.
