Korean for Keeping in Touch: "Let's Not Lose Touch" and Long-Term Connection
Learn Korean phrases for promising to stay in contact over the long term, distinguishing ongoing connection from long-distance relationships.

When you part with a Korean friend, colleague, or classmate, a simple goodbye can feel incomplete. Korean has a small set of warm, natural expressions for promising that a relationship will continue over months and years, not just across a physical distance. This lesson teaches you how to say "Let's not lose touch," how to make a concrete effort to stay connected, and how to respond when someone says it to you. You will practice the difference between simply living far apart and actively maintaining a bond over time.
By the end, you can…
- say "Let's not lose touch" naturally in Korean.
- promise to make an effort to stay in contact.
- respond warmly when someone asks me to keep in touch.
- distinguish long-term connection from long-distance situations.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Useful pattern
The core pattern is 연락하다 (to contact) plus a continuation verb. 연락하고 지내요 uses 지내다, "to live or get along," and means "let's keep living in contact." 연락은 계속해요 uses 계속하다, "to continue," and emphasizes ongoing action. To negate the loss, use 끊기다, "to be cut off," as in 연락이 끊기다. Example: 우리 연락이 끊기면 안 돼요 (Our contact shouldn't be cut off).
When to use it
Use 연락하고 지내요 with friends, classmates, or coworkers you genuinely expect to see again. Use 연락 끊기지 말아요 when someone is moving, graduating, or changing jobs, where losing touch is a real risk. Use 제가 먼저 연락할게요 when you want to reassure a shy or busy friend. These are not romantic by default; they work for friendship and professional networks, though tone and relationship shape how warm they sound.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

Korean friendship often values steady, low-pressure contact over constant messaging. Saying 연락하고 지내요 is a sincere social promise, not a throwaway line. If you say it, a short message months later is appreciated. Age and hierarchy matter: with a much older person, use 연락 드릴게요 (I'll contact you) instead of 연락할게요.
One thing to watch for
Using 우리 연락하지 마요 to mean "Let's not lose touch," by negating 연락하다 directly.
Try this instead: 하지 마요 means "don't contact," the opposite of your goal. To say "let's not lose touch," negate the loss, not the contact: 우리 연락 끊기지 말아요. If you want to say "let's keep contacting each other," use 우리 계속 연락해요.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How would you say "Let's not lose touch" to a close friend?
Show a sample answer
우리 연락 끊기지 말아요.
This uses 끊기다 (to be cut off) in the negative suggestion form 말아요. 우리 연락하고 지내요 is also valid and slightly softer.
2Your friend is very busy. How do you promise ongoing contact without demanding frequency?
Show a sample answer
자주는 못 해도 연락은 계속해요.
This acknowledges limited frequency while promising continuity. 가끔이라도 연락해요 (contact me even occasionally) is another natural alternative.
3You want to take the initiative. What phrase shows you will contact first?
Show a sample answer
제가 먼저 연락할게요.
제가 marks "I" as the doer, 먼저 means "first," and 연락할게요 is a polite promise. With a superior, use 제가 먼저 연락 드릴게요.
Promise continuity, not frequency: use 연락하고 지내요 or 연락 끊기지 말아요, and back it up with one short message later.
