Korean for the Laundromat: Asking If a Queen Duvet Fits the Dryer

Learn polite Korean phrases to ask whether a large duvet fits a laundromat dryer, which machine is biggest, and how long a cycle takes.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

You arrive at a Korean laundromat (빨래방) carrying a queen-size duvet (이불). Before you load it, you need to know whether it will fit in the dryer (건조기) and which machine is large enough. This lesson gives you three reusable patterns: asking if something fits (이거 들어가요?), asking which is the biggest machine (제일 큰 건조기 몇 호예요?), and asking how long a cycle runs (몇 분 걸려요?). You will also learn to point out the item clearly and respond politely to staff. The focus is on polite, spoken Korean you can use immediately, without assuming any particular price or policy.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether a duvet fits in a dryer using 이거 들어가요?
    • ask which dryer is the largest and identify it by number.
    • ask how many minutes a drying cycle takes.
    • name the key objects: 이불, 건조기, 빨래방.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    이거 들어가요?

    Does this fit inside?

    i-geo deu-reo-ga-yo?

Point to the duvet and then to the dryer opening. Use this for any object you want to put into a machine or container. The subject is often omitted when it is obvious from pointing.

    제일 큰 건조기 몇 호예요?

What number is the biggest dryer?

    je-il keun geon-jo-gi myeot ho-ye-yo?

Ask this when you need the largest machine. The answer will be a number plus 호, for example 3호.

    이불이 커서 걱정이에요.

I'm worried because the duvet is big.

    i-bu-ri keo-seo geok-jeong-i-e-yo.

A polite way to explain your concern before asking for help. It invites staff to suggest a suitable machine. 이불이 is the subject form of 이불.

    몇 분 걸려요?

How many minutes does it take?

    myeot bun geol-lyeo-yo?

Use after choosing a machine to ask about the cycle time. The answer will be a number plus 분.

    한 번에 들어가요?

Does it fit in one go?

    han beo-ne deu-reo-ga-yo?

Ask this if you want to know whether the whole duvet fits at once, rather than needing two machines or two cycles. 한 번에 means 'in one go / at one time'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 이거 들어가요? means 'Does this go in?' or 'Does this fit?' Use 이거 for 'this' when pointing to something near you. Replace 이거 with the item name for clarity: 이불 들어가요? ('Does the duvet fit?'). To ask about a specific machine, add the location with 에: 이 건조기에 들어가요? ('Does it fit in this dryer?'). The verb 들어가다 literally means 'go in', so it works for any container, washing machine, or dryer. For a negative answer, staff might say 안 들어가요 ('It doesn't fit') or 너무 커요 ('It's too big').

    When to use it

Use these questions at a laundromat before you pay or start a machine. First, show the duvet and ask 이거 들어가요? while pointing at a dryer. If you need the largest one, ask 제일 큰 건조기 몇 호예요? Staff will point to a number. Then confirm the time with 몇 분 걸려요? If you are unsure whether one machine is enough, ask 한 번에 들어가요? This sequence keeps the conversation polite and practical. Avoid asking about prices or specific policies; instead, ask what you need to know for your own laundry. Note that 몇 호예요? uses the counter 호 for machine numbers, and 몇 분 걸려요? uses the counter 분 for minutes.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

안녕하세요. 이불을 건조기에 넣고 싶은데요. 이거 들어가요?

    Hello. I want to put this duvet in the dryer. Does this fit?an-nyeong-ha-se-yo. i-bu-reul geon-jo-gi-e neo-ko si-peun-de-yo. i-geo deu-reo-ga-yo?
    B

이불이 많이 커요? 제일 큰 건조기는 5호예요.

Is the duvet very big? The biggest dryer is number 5.i-bu-ri ma-ni keo-yo? je-il keun geon-jo-gi-neun o-ho-ye-yo.
    A

    네, 커요. 5호에 들어가요? 그리고 몇 분 걸려요?

Yes, it's big. Does it fit in number 5? And how many minutes does it take?ne, keo-yo. o-ho-e deu-reo-ga-yo? geu-ri-go myeot bun geol-lyeo-yo?
    B

    5호에 들어가요. 보통 40분 걸려요.

    It fits in number 5. It usually takes 40 minutes.o-ho-e deu-reo-ga-yo. bo-tong sa-sip-bun geol-lyeo-yo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean laundromats, machines are often labeled with numbers (호). Staff may be busy, so begin with 안녕하세요 and keep your question short. Using polite endings like -요 is standard with strangers. If you need to clarify, you can point and repeat the key word, such as 이불 or 건조기. Avoid assuming the staff will handle your laundry for you; most laundromats are self-service, but asking about machine size is always appropriate. Note that some laundromats are coin-operated (동전) and others are staffed, so policies vary by shop.

    One thing to watch for

Using 이거 들어가요? for a person or asking if a person can enter a place.

Try this instead: For people, use 들어가도 돼요? ('May I go in?') or 사람이 들어가요? ('Do people go in?'). Reserve 이거 들어가요? for objects fitting into a machine or container. Example: 이불이 이 건조기에 들어가요? ('Does the duvet fit in this dryer?').

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You want to know if your duvet fits in the dryer you are pointing at. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    이불이 이 건조기에 들어가요?

This clearly names the duvet and the dryer. You can also say 이거 들어가요? while pointing, which is shorter and still polite.

2You need the largest dryer. How do you ask which number it is?

    Show a sample answer

    제일 큰 건조기 몇 호예요?

This asks for the number of the biggest dryer. The answer will be a number plus 호, such as 5호.

3After choosing a machine, how do you ask how many minutes the cycle takes?

    Show a sample answer

    몇 분 걸려요?

This is the standard way to ask about duration. You can also say 이거 몇 분 걸려요? to be more specific about the machine or cycle.

    Take this with you

At the laundromat, point to your duvet and ask 이거 들어가요? Then ask 제일 큰 건조기 몇 호예요? to find the biggest dryer, and 몇 분 걸려요? for the time. Keep it polite and simple.
