Korean for Kiosk Pickup: Where Do I Wait After Ordering?

Learn polite Korean to ask where to wait after ordering at a kiosk, whether your number is called aloud or shown on a screen, and how to confirm pickup at the counter or pickup shelf.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

You have just ordered at a Korean kiosk, but you are not sure whether to stand near the counter, sit down, or watch a pickup shelf. This lesson gives you polite Korean questions for exactly that moment. You will learn how to ask where to wait, how to refer to the pickup counter or pickup shelf, and how to confirm whether your number will be called aloud or shown on a screen. The focus is on spoken questions you can use with staff, not on memorizing fixed store policies.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask politely where I should wait after ordering at a kiosk.
    • ask whether my number will be called aloud or shown on a screen.
    • confirm whether I should go to the counter when my number is called.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Where should I wait?

    eo-di-seo gi-da-ri-myeon dwae-yo?

A polite, general question you can ask a staff member right after ordering. It works in cafes, fast-food places, and other kiosk settings.

    pickup counter; pickup shelf

    pi-keop-dae

A common sign or staff word for the place where finished orders are placed. It can refer to a counter or a shelf, so point or ask if you are unsure.

Should I go when you call my number?

    je beon-ho bul-leo-ju-si-myeon ga-myeon dwae-yo?

Use this to confirm the pickup procedure. It asks whether you should come when your number is called aloud.

Will you call the number aloud, or does it appear on a screen?

    beon-ho-reul so-ri-ro bul-leo-ju-se-yo, a-ni-myeon hwa-myeon-e tteo-yo?

Ask this when you cannot tell whether to listen for your number or watch a screen. It offers two possibilities clearly. Note that 불러주세요 is a polite request ('please call'), so this asks the staff to call it aloud.

Should I wait here, or over there?

    yeo-gi-seo gi-da-ri-myeon dwae-yo, jeo-jjok-e-seo gi-da-ri-myeon dwae-yo?

Use this while pointing to two places, such as the counter area and the pickup shelf. Pointing makes the question clear and polite.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 기다리면 돼요? means “Should I wait…?” or “Is it okay if I wait…?” It follows a place word plus 에서. For example, 여기서 기다리면 돼요? means “Should I wait here?” and 픽업대에서 기다리면 돼요? means “Should I wait at the pickup counter?” This pattern is polite and soft because 돼요? asks for confirmation rather than demanding a rule. You can also use 가면 돼요? for “Should I go…?” as in 번호 부르면 가면 돼요? When you ask about the staff's action, use the honorific -시-: 제 번호 불러주시면 가면 돼요? means “Should I go when you call my number?”

    When to use it

Use these questions right after you finish at the kiosk, before you sit down or walk away. If you see a pickup shelf but no clear sign, ask If you hear announcements but are not sure they are for you, ask If a staff member points somewhere, confirm with 여기서 기다리면 돼요? These questions are especially helpful in busy cafes where the counter and pickup area are separate.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    I ordered, but where should I wait?ju-mun-haet-neun-de eo-di-seo gi-da-ri-myeon dwae-yo?
    B

You can wait at the pickup counter over there.jeo-jjok pi-keop-dae-e-seo gi-da-ri-si-myeon dwae-yo.
    A

Will you call the number aloud, or does it appear on a screen?beon-ho-reul so-ri-ro bul-leo-ju-se-yo, a-ni-myeon hwa-myeon-e tteo-yo?
    B

It appears on the screen. Should I go when my number is called?hwa-myeon-e tteo-yo. beon-ho bu-reu-myeon ga-myeon dwae-yo?

A little context goes a long way

Korean staff often give short, practical answers, so a simple 확인 question is normal and not rude. Using -요 endings keeps your question polite without being overly formal. When you ask about the staff member's action, use the honorific -시- form, as in 기다리시면 돼요? or 불러주시면; for your own action, 기다리면 돼요? is fine. Pointing while asking is common and helps avoid confusion.

    One thing to watch for

Using 어디서 기다려요? as a direct translation of “Where do I wait?”

Try this instead: 어디서 기다려요? can sound like “Where are you waiting?” or a plain information question. For asking what you should do, use This adds the “should I” meaning and sounds more natural when asking staff for guidance.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You ordered at a kiosk and see a pickup shelf. Ask a staff member where you should wait.

    Show a sample answer

This asks specifically about waiting at the pickup shelf. You could also ask 어디서 기다리면 돼요? if you want a general answer.

2You are not sure whether your number will be called aloud or shown on a screen. Ask.

    Show a sample answer

This clearly offers two possibilities. A shorter alternative is 번호 불러주세요? but it does not ask about the screen. Note that 불러주세요 is a polite request, so it asks the staff to call the number aloud.

3A staff member says your number will be called. Confirm that you should go when it is called.

    Show a sample answer

This confirms the action you should take. You could also say 번호 부르면 가면 돼요? in a slightly less formal way.

    Take this with you

After ordering at a kiosk, ask 어디서 기다리면 돼요? and confirm with 픽업대 or 제 번호 불러주시면 가면 돼요? so you know exactly where to stand and what signal to watch for.
