Korean for Coin Karaoke: Asking to Add or Extend Time

Learn casual Korean phrases to ask staff or friends about adding time in a coin karaoke room, using 시간, 연장, and 추가 naturally.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In a Korean coin karaoke room (코인노래방), you usually pay for a block of time, and when the timer runs low, you may want to add more minutes. This lesson teaches you how to ask about extending your time in casual informal Korean, the register you would use with friends or a staff member in a relaxed setting. You will learn the key vocabulary 시간 (time), 연장 (extension), and 추가 (addition), and practice two core patterns: 시간 더 추가할 수 있어? (Can we add more time?) and 10분만 더 연장해줘 (Please extend it by just 10 more minutes). The focus is on speaking naturally and clearly, not on memorizing fixed service rules, since policies vary by shop. By the end, you will be able to check remaining time, ask if adding time is possible, and request a specific extension.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether I can add more time in a coin karaoke room using 시간 더 추가할 수 있어?
    • request a specific extension with 10분만 더 연장해줘.
    • ask how much time is left using 시간 얼마나 남았어?
    • respond to a friend's suggestion about extending time in casual Korean.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    시간 더 추가할 수 있어?

    Can we add more time?

    si-gan deo chu-ga-hal su i-sseo?

Casual polite question to a staff member or friend. Use when you want to know if adding time is possible.

    10분만 더 연장해줘.

Please extend it by just 10 more minutes.

    sip-bun-man deo yeon-jang-hae-jwo.

Casual request to a staff member or friend. The particle 만 means 'only' and softens the request.

    시간 얼마나 남았어?

    How much time is left?

    si-gan eol-ma-na na-ma-sseo?

Ask a friend or staff to check remaining time. 남았어 is the past tense form used for current state.

    30분 더 연장할래.

I want to extend by 30 more minutes.

    sam-sip-bun deo yeon-jang-hal-lae.

Casual statement of intention, often used when telling a friend what you plan to do. -ㄹ래 expresses the speaker's own intention or willingness.

    추가 요금 있어?

    Is there an extra charge?

    chu-ga yo-geum i-sseo?

Ask about additional cost without assuming a specific price. Useful before confirming an extension.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern '시간 더 추가할 수 있어?' combines 시간 (time), 더 (more), 추가하다 (to add), and the ability question ending -ㄹ 수 있어?. It literally asks 'Can we add more time?' You can replace 시간 with a specific duration: '10분 더 추가할 수 있어?' (Can we add 10 more minutes?). For a request rather than a question, use '10분만 더 연장해줘' with 연장하다 (to extend) and -아/어 줘 (please do it for me). The particle 만 limits the amount, making the request sound lighter. Both patterns are casual and work with friends or staff in a coin karaoke setting.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when the timer shows only a few minutes left and you and your friends want to keep singing. First check remaining time with '시간 얼마나 남았어?' Then, if you decide to stay, ask '시간 더 추가할 수 있어?' If the staff says yes, you can specify: '20분만 더 연장해줘.' If you are unsure about cost, ask '추가 요금 있어?' before confirming. These casual forms are fine with friends; with staff you do not know, the polite -아/어 주세요 form is safer.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    야, 시간 얼마나 남았어?

    Hey, how much time is left?ya, si-gan eol-ma-na na-ma-sseo?
    B

    5분밖에 안 남았어. 더 부르고 싶다.

    Only 5 minutes left. I want to sing more.o-bun-ba-kke an na-ma-sseo. deo bu-reu-go sip-da.
    A

그럼 시간 더 추가할 수 있는지 물어볼게.

Then I'll ask whether we can add more time.geu-reom si-gan deo chu-ga-hal su in-neun-ji mu-reo-bol-ge.
    B

    응, 10분만 더 연장해줘.

Yeah, please extend it by just 10 more minutes.eung, sip-bun-man deo yeon-jang-hae-jwo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean coin karaoke rooms, time is usually sold in blocks, and extension policies vary by shop. Staff are often part-time workers, so casual polite speech (해요체 or 반말 depending on your relationship) is common. Using 반말 with a stranger can sound rude, so if you are not sure, use the -아/어 주세요 form instead of -아/어 줘. Among friends, the casual forms in this lesson are natural and friendly.

    One thing to watch for

Using '시간을 추가해 주세요' with the object particle 을 in a casual request, which can sound overly formal or textbook-like.

Try this instead: In casual speech, drop the object particle and use '시간 더 추가할 수 있어?' or '10분만 더 연장해줘.' For a polite request to a stranger, say '10분만 더 연장해 주세요.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask a friend if you can add more time?

    Show a sample answer

    시간 더 추가할 수 있어?

This uses the casual ability question pattern. You could also say '시간 더 추가할 수 있을까?' for a slightly softer tone.

2You want to extend by 15 minutes. What do you say to the staff in casual Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    15분만 더 연장해줘.

The pattern [time]만 더 연장해줘 works for any number of minutes. If you need to be polite, use 연장해 주세요.

3What phrase checks the remaining time?

    Show a sample answer

    시간 얼마나 남았어?

This is the standard casual way to ask how much time is left. You can also say '얼마나 남았어?' without 시간 if context is clear.

    Take this with you

Use 시간 더 추가할 수 있어? to ask if adding time is possible, and 10분만 더 연장해줘 to request a specific extension. Check remaining time with 시간 얼마나 남았어? and ask about extra charges with 추가 요금 있어? when needed.
